In an ideal world, I'd agree. But I'd be focussing on central midfield and defence before adding anything up front. I suppose Man U have the resources to do both, but with such a big turnover of players already I'd be wary of "the Spurs effect". Strengthen what's absolutely necessary now (... which frankly is still quite a lot), and then improve again next summer based on how well the squad has performed. There's no shortage of cover for strikers or attacking midfield as it is.

Well they need to add Vidal and Vermalaen i think. So that is four in it should be five out. Would Cavani really rock the boat that much? Because that is a seriously good team with lots of tactical options and a top manager to boot.

As you say it aint the money it is rocking the boat they need to be careful off. Maybe this is why it is taking so long Woody did say another two did he not? And look how long it took to look at Herrera the lad walked right in and had a hand in 6 or 7 goals versus Galaxy ;)

We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Sporting Lisbon for the transfer of Eric Dier, subject to the player passing a medical.
The versatile England Under-21 defender came through the ranks at the Primeira Liga side and has gone on to make a total of 30 appearances in their First Team.

heart breaking for dawson

Just have patience... Remember Van Gaal only came back from the world cup fairly recently, and he's been assessing the squad and what he can do with it. He's a control freak (a good quality for a manager...) and he'll want to make his own choices about players.

He's no idiot, and the weaknesses in the side are clear - you'll get another central midfielder for sure. If it's not Vidal, it'll be Carvalho (or someone similar).

I think you'll make 3 more signings before the end of the summer. A central/defensive midfielder, and a pair of defenders (probably a CB and a RB). You can't really compare the timescale with other top clubs - Mourinho had all of last season to assess the Chelsea squad, and line up replacements. Van Gaal has had two weeks.

United still have the name, they have money to burn, and with Van Gaal they have a manager known for success. The players will come before Sept 2nd.

I know you're probably right, but he's only mentioned signing a wing back and a central defender so far.

He did say he was interested in Strootman though so I guess that indicates he wants a central midfielder.

It's just depressing, no matter how good a manager he is, some of our players are just not good enough/injury prone. There's no reason for us to be penny pinching and hoping youngsters can come good in certain positions.

All good options... But what about Carvalho? Not a fan?

I think he's got plenty of potential, and it'd good to see him playing for United. He's a bit more defensive minded than the others you list, but in such an attack-oriented squad I'd argue that's exactly what's needed.

I have honestly never seen him play properly so I have no idea. I have heard his name being bandied about for rather large fees but have no idea what hes worth.

Metro recons that Arsenal have completed a deal for Juan Fernando Quintero, at £15.8m.

I don't know too much about him, but he's a CAM. For £16m it seems an odd choice - cover for Ozil I suppose, and a prospect for the future, but for £8m more Arsenal could have had Fabregas in the same position (and a lot more flexibility). Wages won't be comparable but still...

I don't think it's penny pinching per se, just that these things take time and Van Gaal was not with the squad until two weeks ago due to the cup. I'm sure the signings will come, it'll just be towards the end of August.

Also, I think there needs to be some adjustment of expectations. I can't see United challenging for the title this year, whatever additions they make to the squad. The mess left by Ferguson (and not rectified by Moyes) is too big to fully correct in one season, and the competition (City and Chelsea) are too strong. I'm expecting a solid season "in transition", with Man U finishing 3rd or 4th. The rebuilding process can then be completed next summer to give Van Gaal the squad he needs to challenge the title, with enough continuity to hit the ground running from the first game.

woo, I always say, buy one defender and 13 central attacking players every window... you can literally never have enough central attacking players. :p

Buying for the future is great but Ramsey, Wilshire, AOC, Zelalem are all young. We got rid of Eisfeld, also pretty capable in such a position, because Wenger refused to give a youngster game time. Seems bizarre if true, entirely believable because it's Wenger, but still bizarre.

Remember that three big name players for the team left this summer. Fergie did leave it in a mess to some degree, but he also left the money for a new manager to spend. This season would be a far smaller change required if big changes were made last year. IE buy two central mids, a winger or two and a CB last year. Then the CB plays in rotation/settles in, the central mid (bought by a competent manager) couldn't fail to be an improvement and would have a year to settle in with Vidic/Evra behind them. Then this year you'd have a replacement CB in the rotation, a couple central midfielders with a years experience. Then this summer you add a couple wingers, the left back, much smaller overall change.

Moyes is far far too timid as a manager, he tried Fergie's formation/system for ages, he didn't want to make broad changes to the team.

So Fergie left at the right time, with a bunch of old players on their way out but with a year left to tide him over to bed in new players and with the money in the pot to buy the midfield a new manager wanted. He did everything right except back Moyes for the job, that was Fergie's biggest mistake as a manager.

I haven't seen a Man Utd fan anywhere say they're expecting a title challenge. If we get Vidal, Hummels and Di Maria then I think we'd be capable, assuming it all went well.

I'm just expecting 3rd or 4th, and our current squad could probably just about get it, but signings are needed to make sure we do.

I'm not sure Utd will waltz back into the top 4, new manager or not. 5th-7th is more achievable, I'd think ;)

From what I've seen he looks pretty good. Happily have him join us. He plays, CM, Wing and CF.

Maybe carzorla will be off. Looks like a younger better version of him.

Not the ideal position to strengthen but for that price I wouldn't pass him up.

What does 'could probably just about get it' mean? You say the first bit because it'd be bonkers for the fans to be expecting a title challenge... and that's entirely fair. But if the bit I highlighted bit means you think the current squad will probably get 3rd or 4th is bordering on being similarly bonkers... and it sounds like that's what you mean, given you say 3rd or 4th is what you're expecting. I just can't see probably finishing ahead of Liverpool and/or Arsenal, given the current strength of the squads.

The current squad, if they have a brilliant season, could get 4th. The attack is good enough, if the defence all step it up. Big ask though.

"Could probably just about get 4th" doesn't mean I think we will, just that I think it's possible.

What may have confused you, so I'll clarify, I'm expecting 3rd or 4th, as well as signings. No signings, and it's a big ask.

Utd are more than capable of both challenging for the top 4 positions and even the League. They have a Champions League squad in terms of depth and in a lot of areas quality without the Champions League commitments.

Whether they do actually challenge for the league or even just make the CL doesn't just depend on them though. Unless one of last seasons top 4 fall off a cliff, we could find ourselves with 5 sides pushing 80+ points.

I do not think we have seen the first 11 yet either. He mentions Carrick and Fergie always picked him and when our defenders had an injury crisis he would drop back there. Why? Because he intercepts, Reads well and can bring the ball out and give a bit of tempo control to a backline. I reckon this was why it is mentioned as a "blow" because if the man wants Vidal or Strootman and he already has Carrick and Herrera where do you think he will go? I think he will drop in the middle of the defence like Barcelona and all did with Mascherano and Bayern with Javi Martinez. You have to remember as well United have lost a calming and very experienced player in Rio and Carrick again brings that.

Rafael Jones Carrick Evans Shaw would probably of been the first choice back five for pre-season but two are injured. Carrick is not two footed is he and Evans is two footed so i guess maybe this is why he cooled on Vermalaen too although he would be good to share a space with Evans and add some backup.

That back five is equal to Arsenal or Liverpool if Vermalen comes i would say superior. If Vidal comes i would say again superior but with Herrera i still cannot. And our strike force is pretty damm good as well certainly better than Arsenal or Liverpool. So i reckon we will get 3rd or 4th. But if we can add two more im going to say we will push hard on the top two that is for sure. We do not even need to bother about the FA cup we just have to focus on 38 games only Liverpool have that luxury and even then i bet they press on the FA cup where as i hope LVG will have sense to abandon it early.

Maybe I'm being hopeful but I can't see Utd getting a top 4 even with a few signings. It's going to be an interesting season. Not playing CL could help them stay fit though and push on.

4th I think top, but if I were a betting man I would say 5th.
