I think they're definitely in with a shout, as it stands, but I'd argue it's between Liverpool/Manyoo/Everton/Tottenham for forth spot... in order of likelihood, as it stands. Tottenham being an unknown quantity as it stands, imo. I just find it odd when people claim Manyoo will instantly bounce back into the top four/they're odds on to achieve that/etc, when the top four of last year are still very strong and the other pretenders are a big threat.

It's not a given that they'll bounce back but at the same time they're not as bad as they showed last season.

They've got a very good keeper, 2 very good fullbacks, a couple of very good attacking mids and 2 excellent strikers. Teams have won leagues with worse squads.

Utd's problem last season and to a lesser extent even under Fergie (despite winning the League) was finding a balanced system that got the best out of their attacking players.

If they can add a decent CB and DM to that squad, and find a system that gets Rooney and RvP firing, they're going to pick up a lot of points. And as Fergie showed in his last season, you don't need to be the best side to win the League, you just need to be the best side and beating the bottom 15-16 sides. If Utd pick up enough points against the bottom sides, they'll be in the mix whether they're as strong as the other challengers or not.

There is still a lot of time left before the transfer window closes /Jim White mode on. I'm sure there will still be comings and goings at clubs :).

In Sheffield Wednesday news;

  • Tom Lees: Sheffield Wednesday sign Leeds United central defender

Sheffield Wednesday have completed the signing of defender Tom Lees from Leeds United for an undisclosed fee.

BBC Link.

Cool :).

I'm not sure Utd will waltz back into the top 4, new manager or not. 5th-7th is more achievable, I'd think ;)

With two solid signings, centre half and cm, Utd can easily challange hard for top four. A full back as well and its even better.

Im a firm believer that last season would have been far worse had Mata not arrived in Jan, even though he effectively only managed to keep us in 7th ( were Utd were in Jan). Utd had chances to climb ( ie Spurs and Everton dropping points) but the team mentality / belief was already shot to bits and we didnt take them.

Its also notable that Utd have a much nicer start to the season before any huge teams come along ( unlike that start under Moyes). If the positivity LvG is already building can get a good stack of points on the board before ( I think) the 5th or 6th game when Utd have a title challanger that will help enourmously.

I seriously hope the stuff coming out in the press over the last 24 hrs that LvG will wait for Strootman in Jan is a complete bluff ( and given that Jan is a wierd time to buy anyway usually, I hope it is a bluff). It also kind of discounts the probability that Utd couldnt give enough games to three top quality cm's ( including Herrera) which is not true at all, given that at least two are required in every game).

Even in the best case scenario Utd fans have to hope for very few major injuries, otherwise with the liklihood that the 1st XI squad is going to be wafer thin for a season at least, a couple of lomg term injuries could completely cripple the season ( unlike Chelsea and City, and arguably Liverpool and Arsenal too). a lot of young, inexperienced players will get games no doubt

Edit - even without the experience Keane is a better centre half than Carrick ( and Ive always liked MC as a midfielder). In an emergency, then fine, but Evans, Smalling and Keane are all much better, and maybe even Jones ( Im not convinced on Jones though)

Liverpool set to sign Moreno and Manquillo very soon according to Tony Barrett and The Echo.

About time. I suppose with Davies joining Spurs and Bertrand moving to Southampton we had no other LB's to flirt with in the hope Sevilla would drop their asking price for Moreno.

It'll be interesting to see which, if any, of our current fullbacks leave if we do sign both. Unlike others I'm totally against Johnson leaving - on form he's still excellent and his style of play is crucial to our game, not to mention we won't get a worthwhile fee for him. There's been no suggestion of Enrique leaving, which only really leaves Kelly. Johnson, Flanagan, Enrique, Moreno and Manquillo leaves us quite well stocked and will allow us to bed Moreno and Manquillo in before both Johnson and Enrique inevitably leave within the next year.

From what I've seen he looks pretty good. Happily have him join us. He plays, CM, Wing and CF.

Maybe carzorla will be off. Looks like a younger better version of him.

Not the ideal position to strengthen but for that price I wouldn't pass him up.

Watched some vids(I don't base any thing based purely off youtube in general but basically not seen him before), there is promise there. He has shot and scored from range, something our current team lacks as a threat almost completely. Ramsey still likes to shoot from range but is crap, he scored one cracker from range but otherwise can't hit the target. Deadly inside the box last season but a genuine threat from freekicks and the odd long range shot to throw off the defence and worry them would be good. He picks out forward passes when possible, some of the angles he'll pass out to pick someone making a run, or just find a forward pass suggests really good awareness/vision.

He looks promising, but he's also tiny, 5"6 I think, which could be problematic.

I'm not really sure where he'd play, as a wide attacker maybe, he seems more a number 10 than a striker but maybe with his size in a top league central might not work out for him.

His highlights also, well, about 35 assists and four goals all seemed to come against the same god awful defence in an international game. Promise there for sure, intelligence in the way he was playing but against tougher opposition in a physical league, would be interesting.

We don't have an awful lot of players like him though, he's like Ozil or Santi but with the ability to beat players and play much more dynamically.

Well said Baz. :)

Assuming that the needed additions are made (centre back, right wing back and a top class CM), I see no reason why United won't finish 3rd or 4th... I think Chelsea and City will be out of reach, barring a crap run of form or a dressing-room bust up, but I can certainly see you guys mixing it up with Arsenal and Liverpool. The start of the season will probably be slow, as the team learns to play as a unit, but Van Gaal is an excellent manager and I have no doubt he'll get the best out of the players eventually.

I think Liverpool will struggle a bit this season actually. Rodgers has focussed more on adding depth to the squad rather than world-class talent. In the longer term this is the right move, but I think it might hamper their ambitions this season. Liverpool over-performed for their squad last season, and I think it'll be hard to replicate. With Champions League football and a better run in the domestic cups there will be more games to play, and without Suarez Liverpool's deadly attack force is weakened. No matter how well Sturridge is coming along, I think you'll miss Suarez's teeth (speaking figuratively).

My prediction:

1. Chelsea
2. City
3. United
4. Arsenal
5. Liverpool
6. Spurs
7. Everton

Arsenal have strengthened well, and they should finish above United, but I'm expecting their customary collapse after Christmas to drop them back a few pegs. Pochettino will get more out of Spurs than his predecessors, and it should be enough to see off Everton.

Can't believe these rumours of Hummels for £20m. I mean what on Earth?

IF he was to move - and it's a Jupiter sized IF - it would be for something at minimum of double that. Way to ruin your rumour with a poor valuation of the player in question. :p

Didn't think I'd leave the last page thinking BaZ was talking the most sense of anyone about Manchester United, crikey.

Last season we massively underachieved and it's kind of papered over the fact that our attacking players are arguably level with Chelsea / City, and better than Liverpool / Spurs / Everton / Arsenal.

Get RvP, Rooney & Mata working together well we're going to pick up points. As Liverpool showed, if you can score goals, being a bit leaky is alright, and we've got the players to do that if the system is right.

Last season we just threw crosses into the box and we managed to score only a couple less than Chelsea, so I'm optimistic that if we actually you know, play football, we might score a few more :p.

Not sure how you can argue you have an attack on par with Chelsea, City or even Arsenal and Liverpool.

RVP, best years behind him.
Rooney, best years behind him.
Welbeck, substandard.
Hernandez, substandard.

Certainly need a better defence if you are going to break the top four.

Rooney and RvP are still top strikers. RvP had one of his best years season before last and last season everyone had a shocker under Moyes and he was injured a fair bit.

RvP Rooney

Mata

Thats easily one of the best attacks in the league. Better than Liverpools, Arsenals and Chelseas front 3. Those teams just have a much better set of midfielders than us to make up for it.

heart breaking for dawson

There's a few newspaper articles online about Dier as well following the confirmed agreement. I know nothing of this kid except what I've read but I'm quite excited to see what he's all about. Not sure he will make the Celticfriendly tomorrow, but maybe Schalke on the 8th.

yeah i would imagine they would want to shift him now rather than later.

Also if it's not going to happen United need to start looking at alternatives. I admit I'm not big on continental football so I'm not sure where they would start but I expect they might have a punt at Strootman (medical permitting).

Either way I just want an end to the Vidal saga - even if it's a NO we can start moving forwards from it all. It's dragged too long.
