Benatia would be a fantastic signing for United, just what the doctor ordered.. Now go out and sign another midfielder to play alongside Herrera and you'll surprise a few.

As it currently stands, with or without injuries. United's team is lacking in quality.

Daniel Taylor at the Guardian (usually reliable) says his source is more or less never wrong and says there's no interest in Benatia...

And the latest from Jason Burt at the Telegraph (not sure how well informed he is):

Moves for Di Maria and Benatia are still possible but both are complicated, as is the Rojo deal. United have been encouraged to bid for Di Maria after Paris St Germain's attempts to sign him stalled but sources insist that "the numbers do not work" at this point, with a fee in excess of £50 million being asked for. United are being quoted around £30million for Benatia, which they are unlikely to agree to.

United remain interested in Rojo, who is keen to move to Old Trafford, but the £15million deal has been stalled because of a row between his club and agent. Another option is the Dutch international Blind who was in Van Gaal's team for the World Cup and can play anywhere in defence or as a holding midfielder.

I hope they're just feeding the press lies... or this is really, really bad. If we think £30m is too much for Benatia, yet £27m is fine for Shaw, then I'm seriously baffled.

It's a pretty bold move from Sky to say he's flying in for talks if there's absolutely no substance to it.

We're all set for a Daley Blind deadline day £25m panic buy at this rate...

Arsenal need a proper DM instead of Arteta. He's been great for us but we need to put a natural DM in there.

IF we were going to spend money at the moment I'd say DM would be nice but LB would potentially make the team. Today down the left it was basically Caz on his own, Gibbs is really poor in attack and poor in defence. When Ozil is back we have Wilshere usually playing deeper, with Flamini or Arteta also in midfield with Ozil ahead of them.

We could certainly strengthen over Flamini or Arteta but most of the big games last year it was our fullbacks who got torn to pieces and that left our CB's exposed and dragged out of position. Almost every goal in the Chelsea game was the result of terrible fullbacks. Flamini/Arteta + Wilshere can do for another year, Monreal should be shipped out with someone new brought in. I hope Debuchy turns out great but even if he does he's 29. Though bellarin looked surprisingly good in the preseason games and Jenks really needs a loan and first team games at his age. Bellarin is at the age that playing 5-10 league games, maybe 5-10 other cup games would be good enough to start but Jenks needs 30+ games this year, either he'll be good enough at the end of it or not.

Gibbs has still only gone the one season relatively injury free and Monreal as the back up option is pretty terrifying because frankly he's been crap. I wouldn't mind seeing Jenks or Bellarin given a shot at left back but Wenger simply doesn't work like that.

Rather than give a youngster games he plays his favourites until he buys someone already better than someone in the team. He doesn't do the whole giving potential multiple games for a chance to improve to the point they deserve to be first team. He does the .... randomly expect younger players to magically improve without any games. That really irks me, Bellarin showed signs of being a really great fullback but he simply won't get chances to go beyond potential into a first team spot under Wenger.

I really hope United are making serious moves to sign some players. In truth it should have been done a long long time ago. Whether or not LVG's excuse of wanting to assess the squad was just cover for our transfer market failings I don't know. Woodward spent the beginning of the transfer window saying they had money to spend and weren't afraid to break records. If that's the case just go and pay the money. If they really are stumbling over the reported fees then that goes against everything they've been claiming.

Seriously turning in to a bigger shambles than last season. The whole Vidal saga alone has been a complete joke. I'd love to know the truth behind it.

Article suggests Barcelona won't be buying Cuadrado, as doing so would put them foul of FFP. They have spent over 100m euro already this window so could be true. Translation is amusing as the players name translates to 'square'.

Regarding Benatia - I can't believe that United would be turning him down based on transfer fee... 35m euro for one of the best centre backs in the world (...and probably the best actually on the market) is not excessive in this day and age. United desperately need defensive reinforcement, and must have expected to pay a small premium for talent given their absence from the Champions League.

Really makes no sense to me. I'll say one thing - if United had gone for Mourinho after Ferguson, instead of Moyes, you would not be having these issues. You'd have a solid squad and be competing for the championship - I have no doubt.

This is going to be another depressing transfer window and we are going to have another poor season as a result. I dont think we are willing to pay good money / offer the wages people want.

I have a horrible feeling that the glazers are just going to milk the club as much as they can while letting it slowly decline.

If they've got any business acumen they will realise that on the field performance massively affects off the field earnings and therefore won't do that.

It is extremely frustrating watching this transfer window though.

German TV Sport1 say Bayern are in the driving seat for Benatia, €30m.

Unless everyone (bar Sky Sports) is wrong, doesn't sound like we're going to get him.

Rojo is the only target the club have widely admitted to being interested in. Rojo alone won't come close to fixing our issues.

I wouldn't be surprised if United are sniffing around Vertonghen. Would take a huge offer though. £30m+

Southampton have bid for Andros Townsend, can see a make-weight deal for Schneiderlin being done and a huge mistake on our part.

Looked lively yesterday, could have scored a belter.

Yes because that is the thing any sensible business owners would do.

Because reasons.

I love people who just randomly claim things like you can't see how much money the club has, or they'll milk the club for money, or random other things.

Every club publishes very detailed accounts showing precisely how much profit/loss they are making. We can see how profitable Utd are and that profit as Nicktay said, is incredibly related to on field success.

The Glazers have been in charge for ages and could have taken probably 100's of millions out of the club, they haven't. If they hadn't been successful winning titles and challenging for titles they wouldn't have been able to sign the latest sponsorship deals as. Well the difference between the deals top four teams are signing and even 6th place is phenomenal. Utd are making 100mil a year from shirt deals and sponsorship(just shirt, excluding the ridiculous amount of weird tie ins Utd has). Everton Newcastle are in the ballpark of 10mil a year, multiple teams are making 2-5mil a year towards the bottom of the table.

The money and profit comes from success, not killing the brand. LIkewise those other dozens of sponsors Utd have add even more income, the kinds of deals the sponsors aren't even interested in smaller clubs for.

It's rather like the Newcastle rubbish, fans insisting he's milking the club of money despite the profits being freely available on the club books, that they've made losses in more seasons than they've made profits, and that every penny from sales has been reinvested. They sold Cabaye late in the window and made offers for replacements but the deals couldn't get done, so he's obviously just taking that 20mil for himself....6 months of that bull then we see Newcastle reinvest that money in the next window, with their biggest buy being the guy they made an offer for in January.

They didn't buy big last summer because they brought in 5-6 players in the January window right before it.

The Glazers can make higher profits and have a more global brand(which helps other businesses as well) when Utd are successful.

As he is already in Manchester for talks hopefully Utd can kidnap him and make him sign :D

It could also be like this mysterious Chelsea interest that never materialised / acted upon......

Fans were/are annoyed by a complete lack of ambition on the clubs part to do anything other than remain in the league. They have already admitted they do not want to win a cup for example.

Edit: seems that quote has gone wrong while typing on my phone.

Cavani to Arsenal cant be true....

Also where would he play in Arsenal's system, unless we are going to offload Podolski and play Cavani on the left.

Sanchez is good, but a liability as a defender.

Chambers is brilliant well worth 16mill!

Cavani at Arsenal would make them quite a force to be reckoned with...

As for where he'd play, well, he'd take Giroud's spot. Arsenal have been in need of a world-class centre-forward for a long time (arguably since Henry).
