Funny how United losing a game 2 - 1 that we could easily have won is called a disaster by many and yet Arsenal and Liverpool scraped wins and both teams have not had a new manager and new system to contend with. Oh... and both of those teams have much stronger/ more settled squads.

Same thing happens every year, Arsenal got beat by Villa last year and people were calling for Wenger's head, they sign Ozil, Wenger becomes god and two months later they've won the league.

I found it funny how there was a lot of talk about playing 3 at the back as some revolutionary new system, it was all the rage in the 1980's and requires to a certain degree specialist players in certain positions such as wing back, against top teams it's simply not good enough throwing average wide players in there and thinking hard work will get them through, imagine if we where in Europe this season and playing Young, Lindegard or whoever at wing back against the top teams, we would get torn to shreds. The formation requires slow build up from the back in order to give the wing backs time to advance forward, this is something we are not used to at Utd, fast counter attacking with wide players stretching the opposition, especially when going a goal down, this was missing against Swansea and there's no chance of it changing any time soon, no energy, aggression and pace in midfield and no leader at the back. And all this talk of DiMaria he isn't worth the value that is being thrown about everywhere, break the bank for someone like Rues in that position maybe, but defence and midfield needs sorting before anything else

We haven't played fast counter attacking football for a very long time.

I think it is clear now that they went after players early on, but either due to money or Woodward's incompetence in the transfer market, they failed to land anyone. This taking in to account that Shaw and Herrera were pretty much done deals.

I'm beginning to think this as well.
I can't believe that Man Utd are not buying players, on purpose.
I think they are trying, but they just can't get anywhere. I do find this strange given that they now have an experienced manager at the helm, who Im sure, has plenty of contacts.

At the very worst, I don't know why LvG doesnt suggest buying some cheap/promising dutch players. The risk is low and if only 1 or 2 of those cheap players become great, the investment would've paid off. Being the Dutch manager, he would definitely have kept tabs on dutch players.

On top of all this, we are chasing Rojo as if he is the World player of the year. I don't rate him as an absolute top class player. Decent, but nothing to get excited about. His signing certainly won't change our fortunes and I am not excited about his arrival, at all.

One thing LvG has said is that his system will take 3 months, to bear fruit. So expect some losses and draws for 3 months. I expect things to change by December.

The Swansea defeat was VERY disappointing, especially given the confidence building pre-season we had.

United need big name signings for the intimidation factor as much as anything else.

If you were Sunderland anticipating playing United this weekend, how much more anxious would you be if Man U bought Vidal and Di Maria tomorrow?

A lot. That is what we are missing and must get back at almost any price. Which is justified by the fact that not buying a big name soon is probably riskier than splashing some money around

You're forgetting the surprise factor. When we turn up with the same squad as now with Hernandez at RWB and Felliani in CM they will have the surprise of their lives.

Been reading a lot about how furious LVG is with the transfer activity, of lack of, so far this window. It's strangely comforting imagining Woodward taking an earful from LVG.

Like a frightened child. Or more realistically, a clueless ****.

Bringing the focus slightly back to transfer rumours - Atletico Madrid's president revealed that Man United went in for Reus with "a big money offer" which Reus rejected, and Atletico can't afford to match:

Enrique Cerezo said:
"I don't know where the Marco Reus rumour came from. It's a player who, at this time, is impossible to us. "

"Look, he had an offer for a lot of money from Manchester United and he has not gone... we will not sign him with a lesser offer".

I heard that same story a few days ago and they made out that he had just said that he thought Reus would go to a big club and that if clubs like United and co couldn't sign him then Athletico had no chance.

Shock horror as Di Maria is rubbish now we might be looking to sign him. :p I've watched a lot of Real Madrid and he's consistently one of their best players, they even stuck him in central midfield and he did very well despite being a winger, and he effectively won them the Champions League final.

The problem is of course that he doesn't fit in the new wing back system. Playing him as a wing back is pointless, and the only other role he could take is the one we have Mata/Rooney/Kagawa for (no. 10). So that leaves us moving to a winger system, and one of RvP/Mata/Rooney being on the bench. Same old story. We'd be better off throwing that kind of cash at Juventus, but of course we're not interested in Vidal...

Much more likely Di Maria will still end up at PSG.

I hate all the pointless United rumours at the moment but I can't help looking! Bring on the 1st September.

They've mostly all fizzled out now. The Rojo thing came out of nowhere so I expect we'll be waiting for something similar to happen again (if anything happens at all).

Rojo aside, the club are only briefing about us being interested in Di Maria, but I'm sure that is reliant on the 'numbers working', which they probably won't.

Have Liverpool officially claimed £75m, or is that what they've supposedly told the papers?

Barca have at least done it officially, Liverpool could easily contest it if they wanted to.

They've said he had a €94m release clause and they got it down to €81m.

Interesting to see Athletico up there, glad to see they have re-invested. Hopefully they can make it a 3-way challenge again :)
