Have Liverpool officially claimed £75m, or is that what they've supposedly told the papers?

Barca have at least done it officially, Liverpool could easily contest it if they wanted to.

They've said he had a €94m release clause and they got it down to €81m.

People still take what Barca say seriously?? Lol.

The usual Liverpool mouth pieces have said 75mil, that's enough proof for me.

I just think it's pretty bold (and stupid) for Barca to come out and say he was cheaper. An official club statement is something people will take more seriously than what all the press have supposedly been told, rightly or wrongly.

Barca must know Liverpool could just squash what they've said immediately and make them look daft, they'd perhaps be better off not mentioning the price at all? Given all the problems they've had with the Neymar transfer, Liverpool exposing their claims as false wouldn't really go down well for them.

Here's what they said anyway:

Last month, he joined Barcelona for a reported fee of £75m but the Catalan club's vice president Jordi Mestre said on Tuesday the actual amount was significantly less.

"Negotiations started before the World Cup and we worked hard to come to a final figure of £65m. We were originally quoted over €90m (£72m).

"He had much better offers than ours financially but he wanted to come to Barcelona. He made a great effort - financially and personally - to be here."

Interesting to see Athletico up there, glad to see they have re-invested. Hopefully they can make it a 3-way challenge again :)

Interesting though these charts are, the figures for this window are pretty meaningless without taking into account revenue from sales.

Atletico may have spent 101m euro, but they received 40m for Diego Costa and 20m from Filipe Luis. Likewise, Chelsea have spent a lot, but stand at a net profit of around £5-10m.

The figures on the right, showing net spend over the past five transfer windows, are a lot more informative.

It shows how horrendously we've spent our money, too.

Yeah... it's not a particularly encouraging statistic for United fans. Though the fact that a large proportion of the squad that's been established for a decade has "aged out" must come into it as well.

A lot of it is that we have spent quite poorly and the other part of it is that we haven't bought quality players so we end up losing a lot of money on a lot of players when we sell.

Look at Chelsea, they buy good players when they are value for money and if you find that you have too many good players (an issue we haven't had in for ever!) you sell them for a profit.

Nani, Young, Valencia, Zaha, Smalling, Jones, Anderson, Nani, Bebe, Kagawa have all arguably dropped in value since we bought them.

Look at sides like Madrid, Chelsea, Man City, Bayern. They are all selling players that would improve Uniteds squad simply because they have much better players than those they are selling.

Offloading that pile of dung Nani is a right result for United.

Oh wait, loan, I guess it was a bit of a stretch to expect someone to part with actual money for him.

.

I think for the most part this is because SAF wasnt ruthless enough with Nani, Young, Anderson (Bebe was a special case imo as Utd never watched him and the "agent" did Utd over - and I thought he had already been sold this summer)

totally agree in general though - Kagawa could still be worht the ~£15m we paid he is a decent player in the right league /or used well. Smalling and Jones were always going to be over priced but even if we sold one or both I dont see why we couldnt get £20m+ combined which would make a loss of £10m across both for 2-3 years service which isnt bad for british players (at worst)

Manchester United @ManUtd

#mufc has reached agreement with Sporting Lisbon to sign defender Marcos Rojo, subject to a medical and personal terms.

A further announcement will be made when the process is complete. #mufc

Someone has to be replacing Nani though surely...if United are paying his wages aswell that's a horrendous deal. I can't imagine he's a small earner...

Thanks to Moyes giving him a new contract I suspect not, but if he does well at Sporting then he'll actually be worth some money next summer.

Besides, there isn't really anywhere we can play him if we stick to the current system. He's not particularly versatile at all.

Woodward did it. He signed a half decent player. Perhaps he can put on his big boy pants and sign someone of real quality now.

Whoa, whoa, whoa... let's not get crazy now. One step at a time :p

Maybe he can work his way up to that for next season? ;)

To be fair he had some hand in the Mata transfer too (although I recall rumours of SAF /Gill being on hand too, not sure if that was ever "confirmed" or not). Whether he works in the current system or not, his quality is undeniable and (well) above anyone else Woodward has signed so far.

edit - although now he will probably require two weeks to lay down to recover.......

I'll wait till the window closes before I rule United out, Rojo is just another body they need in that defense they have.

He's no Benatia/Hummels though, those are type of class players United need if they want to be taken seriously.

"Watch this space" Woodward needs to go out and sign class players, not just adding numbers to the squad for the sake of doing so.
