Tony Barrett @TonyBarretTimes

The situation with Liverpool & Balotelli has moved on in the last 12 hours or so. An initial loan inquiry has led to talks with AC Milan.

Now it appears a permanent deal could be on the table. Talks are ongoing but still at an early stage.

This will be an interesting one. He can be very good but isn't particularly consistent, and his attitude is probably still the same. Should be some entertainment either way.

Also a bit strange as Rodgers categorically ruled out being interested in him not that long ago (was quite firm with it).

As for Balotelli specifically, I'd happily take him on loan with an option to buy but also the ability to send him back in January too.

It looks like Liverpool officials read my posts. It's being reported tonight that we've made an offer to Milan to take Balotelli on loan but want a clause that allows us to send him back if he causes problems.

There's still a lot of Falcao talk doing the rounds too and that we're happy to pay £20m to take him on loan for the season but the deal hinges on whether or not Real come in for him.

So Tony Barrett now reporting that, after an initial loan enquiry, Liverpool are now discussing a permanent deal for Balotelli and remain interested in a loan deal for Falcao (with buy option).

Edit; too slow.

Football is a lie.

Never take anything clubs, managers or agents say directly or indirectly at face value. There's almost always a hidden reason.

While I would love falcao 20m just to loan him is insane I can't see us doing it especially with the baloteli rumours gathering pace I feel were much more likely to get him

I saw that one earlier and laughed, but then thought it would still be better value than the Carroll deal. Never, ever going to happen though.

He won't be fit yet anyway, will he?

Think he is back now obviously not 100% match fit, regarding baloteli I wouldn't be against it as I'd much rather have the option of sturridge, baloteli,Lambert than just sturridge/lambert

Like Moses touches on, it's not as extreme as it seems.

Lets say we went out and signed Cavani, he'd cost £40m and be on £200k per week (just over £10m per year). He'd probably get a 5 year contract, so he'd effectively cost £18m per year.

£20m for 1 season on Falcao is only £2m more on a per season basis but you're not having the risk of committing £90m in total on one player and you're also only paying it for a season where he's still in his prime. With the Cavani example I've used, you're still committed to paying Cavani that average of £18m per year when he's 32 and well past his best.

Indeed... at first glance the £20m loan deal seems expensive, but that's really just the annualised cost of having top players on your team. And, as pointed out already, you're paying it for a single season while he's in his prime, rather than over a five year period which he'll finish at 32 with little resale value.

Buying such an expensive asset outright is always a risk. For example, Torres costs us around £20m per year on the FFP books, in wages and amortised transfer fee. Excuse me while I go vomit :(

Torres is a great example. The effective cost per season is the same but he carried an extra £80m worth of risk and it backfired.

RvP's another. £17m per year and only 1 year of those in his prime, the other 3 years and £51m coming after he turned 30.

£20m for a season from a 28 year old world class striker isn't that bad.

Speaking about that man Torres... The Times is reporting that Torres will be sent to Roma on loan, with Destro coming the other way for £20m :D

This would be amazing if true... Won't do anything to lessen the financial burden of Torres, but having him out of the squad and replaced by a quality striker would be just brilliant. With Destro in place of Torres we would have good quality backup all the way through the squad :)

"What do they need? Five proper players who can hit the ground running and turn round a situation that looks desperate," he added.

For someone who was never one for talking to the Media, gotta wonder what on earth is going on at boardroom level.

And Robson said earlier this week that only two "proper" players are required for a good title challange.

Both extreme opposites imo, 3 would be ideal (even though Utd would be lucky with one atm)

A few others running with that story. We can live in hope. :D

Oh well United fans, not long until the January transfer window and some post xmas misery. I still think it was a massive mistake to be so happy to not get in the uefa league or whatever it's called, just to get the younger players more experience and game time.

Just makes the league campaign that much more difficult - plus the added risk of additional injuries, not to mention the Thursday / Sunday schedule.

Its also not proven whether it would have made any difference being in Europa (rather than not in Europe at all) to the players Utd were after in the first place.

Gill would have gotten a couple more signings done and dusted much earlier than this, its definitely something either at the board level or Woodward thats cuasing the issues.

For all the media talk in public that LvG wanted to give everyone time - with the players released there were enough squad places available to buy a couple (more) players early doors without it causing an issue. Im also convinced LvG had identified them during the initial chat with SAF /Giggs before the WC.
