DONE DEAL: #FCBayern and @OfficialASRoma have agreed the transfer of MEHDI BENATIA (27)! Defensive ace set to sign a 5-year contract.

So we are not going to be bringing in any defensive reinforcements this summer basically. If we don't bring in another defensive minded CM we are still going to really struggle for 4th place. You can have a shaky defence if you have a brilliant midfield to protect them but its madness to have a **** defence and midfield.

Wonder who will start CM for us tonight. Perhaps Cleverley and Fletcher can boss lower league opposition but I doubt it.

... He [Vidal] played 45 minutes last week for Juventus so his knee is fit and he seems okay, for now at least.

With our luck, he will be injured immediately and will be injured for a few months before he gets his first game.

I can't believe that all 3 players bought are not available to play.
Has Rojo's work permit come through yet - is he available?

and on a funny note...

Taking their time with the Di Maria announcement?! Maybe they'll wait until tomorrow as there's a game on tonight (watch them announce it now :p). Confirmation on Sky he's just passed his medical.

If we are trying to sign Vidal (and it sounds like we are), we'll be using his knee as leverage in the deal. Juventus turning down a large amount of cash for him is as risky as us buying him, and we can afford the risk more than them. Apparently Vidal himself has agreed to an appearance based contract, which will help if true. He played 45 minutes last week for Juventus so his knee is fit and he seems okay, for now at least.

Thats incredible if accurate re appearance based contract ( not doubting you, just the source), but I guess its meaningless if clubs dont come to an agreement

Edit Martinez liked Cleverley at Wigan in the EPL ( but dont for a minute believe he wants him at Everton), but that could just as much have been because he was free for a season. So bottom 1/3 of the league is a good level for him....mind you that was before even relegated teams where getting so much £££

You cruel man.
Cleverley is at present in our first team, which is attempting to compete with Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal, etc, for a top 4 place.

Re: appearance based contracts - don't these normally get offered to recovering alcoholics like Stan Collymore or Paul Gascoigne or players who are permanently injured like Hargreaves or Anderton? Given that Vidal is at the peak of his powers (injury excepted), I doubt he would sign an appearance based contract.

That has been the problem with utd for ages. Too low quality, yet still in the team.

Let's put it this way. Sturridge>>> welbeck yet chelsea just sold him on and bought until they had better because although he was good. He wasn't the best strikers in the EPL so he just wasn't good enough.

Mata>>> cleverly yet chelsea sold mata and bought better because mata wasn't good enough.

So why are cleverly and welbeck still at Utd if our aspirations are to be the best? True not every player can be the best n the EPL but players who play regularly aren't good enough to be part of another top4 team so why are they a part of ours?

I've been saying this for years while all the UTD fans on here defended the team till they were blue in the face. Really sad to see it all go on so long.

Are you able to read properly? Because yeah, everyone has been saying Cleverley is great for ages...

Chelsea didn't sell Mata because he wasn't good enough, but because he wasn't a Mourinho sort of player. Moyes panic-bought him, though, but he's a very good player. You can't even compare Mata and Cleverley because they don't play the same position.

Everyone has been after improvements to the team as much as you, and now we're finally working on that, it's too late but we managed okay until recently, to be fair.

All your suggestions for signings have mostly been even more awful than the players we've signed, too. :p

LvG has managed many of the best midfielders in the world, there's no way he looks at Cleverley and thinks "yeah, he'll do a job" - no way. Zero.

Brighton just got Gary Gardner in on loan. 10 first team midfielders now. Sami is building a really nice little team here. So refreshing to see proper attacking football finally!

Edwin Van Der Sar has arrived at Carrington! Footage of him arriving on Sky Sports News just now! He is now on the board at Ajax... working on a deal for Blind?

Interesting.

My one reservation about Blind is that he's not really a physical player, he reads the game and can defend well, but we'd still end up getting bullied in midfield by Man City, for example. He's not weak, but compared to Toure/Fernando he is.

Seems we aren't keen on De Jong, either, but he's not been ruled out.

Is this some sort of joke. All United fans have been saying that we need to overhaul a large part of the squad for a number of years. Yes, some have been saying that we don't because we won the league a few times but we were never the best team in the league and we never played the best football. We won because over the season we were the most consistent team.

Im sure this isnt the first time VdS has visited his old club since being made a director of ajax, yet because its in the transfer window it HAS to be about Blind (and also the agent, unless he is one of the very rare/ good ones and not after a fast buck, denies any contact with Man Utd)

I'm not overly excited by the prospect of Blind... not a bad signing but I don't think it's a particularly good one at this time. It's one of those signings you make when you've got a solid squad of players and you're supplementing it with some young and up and coming talent.

Daily Fail reporting Juve have now approached United about Hernandez. Could open up the prospect of King Arthur but I remember saying the same when Evra went. One things for sure... I can't see Welbeck and Hernandez staying if we are swapping to 433. I think if we stick with 3412 / 352 then it would be a bit reckless to let them both go especially given Rooney and RVPs injury record.
