Don't underestimate how much a big money signing will make back in shirt sales. United have an absolute colossal world wide fan base. There were reports that shirt sales for James for Real made back 20 million in a few weeks.

This was proven to be false at the time (or very weird maths at the very least)

Im sure ADM will be top of the whole EPL sales charts and replace RvP however

There were reports that shirt sales for James for Real made back 20 million in a few weeks.

Adidas came out pretty quickly to say that those figures were "nowhere near reality". Turns out the figure of 345,000 shirts sold was a global extrapolation of the 900 shirts sold in Madrid. Unsurprisingly, in reality, more shirts shirts are sold per head in Madrid than, say, Eithiopia. Go figure.

A link - plenty more out there

Remember as well, the shirt manufacturer gets a large proportion of revenue from sales. Hence the willingness to spe d tens of millions per year on contracts with top clubs.

Veron was outstanding for ManU.

So outstanding that he was flogged off for half the price they paid for him, 2 years later?

He often crops up in 'worst signings' lists as well. Granted these are of course opinion, but someone who was legitimately outstanding doesn't often get slated like that. Even Ferguson said he was a flop.

Can't say I thought he was that bad, but 'outstanding' is a stretch to say the least.

in more important news, dawson has left spurs and gone to hull.

if his ability had matched his passion and proffessionalism, he'd have been great. i wish him well.

Good, hopefully Bruce will have blown his transfer load so that he stops sniffing after Rhodes. ****.

Good buy is that Di Maria, maybe not so much on the price but a naturally gifted left footed player like that are few and far between. Can play on the left and the right will be versatile.

Jordon Ibe's off to Derby on loan by the looks of it. Ideally he'd have gone to a PL side but the ability to recall him if we get a few injuries could prove important

Derby will be a good club for him, playing under a good coach and playing in a side that plays good football.

Assuming LvG changes formation (he has to be considering it), as here: http://www.espnfc.com/blog/tactics-...gaals-tactical-evolution-at-manchester-united

I'm not convinced that stubbornly sticking to 3 CB's is a good idea. With no additions I hope we play something like this:

ERU1Lc0.png

The concern area would be, can Carrick do that job efficiently? And cover for him if he's injured is a bit dodgy. This is something Daley Blind could do. His job is to shield the defence and pick out any of the 3 guys ahead of him, who in turn can work it to the strikers, with the full backs as support.

It also depends how Rojo does, Jones is a decent defender most of the time.

In the highly unlikely event we got Vidal, he could play any of the 3 DM/CM positions, though having him as a pure DM is a bit of a waste.

I'm just trying to figure out who we'll likely try and sign next... and who would be a great fit. The only two clearly mentioned targets are Vidal and Blind. I think the defence has some potential to be at least good (if not great) but it's far from assured.

I thought Veron was a great player.
Not for Man Utd (or Chelsea) but at the time he did seem awesome and like he'd be a good signing.

Di Maria also looks like a good player, not sure he's worth ~£60m though. I'd have thought £40m, maybe £50m for him. Hope I'm proved wrong would be good to see someone with that sort of skill do well in the Premiership (I'm not saying we don't have any skilful players in the Premiership).

Mind you, using Luke Shaw as a benchmark (or Fellani) then Di Maria looks like a bargain!

I think Balotelli will be a great bit of business for £16m too.

I honestly don't get why some teams/managers are so dumb. Dawson, really? There are quite a lot of CB's around who aren't the slowest human beings on earth. He has cost Spurs a quite insane number of points though mistakes and a load more through complete lack of pace.

Spurs on the other hand have got rid of him for 6mil and bought in a freaking giant for 8mil who is a few years younger and has more pace for sure.

The one area they really struggle was defence, okay under AVB they weren't conceding many but they also played 10 men largely in their own half even at home and for 80 mins of a game before barely attacking at the end. Sherwood wasn't poor defensively when he switched them to a more normally attacking team, they just had too many dodgy defenders being relied on. Dier/Fazio/Vert could be a very strong trio of players to rotate through at CB.

Bentaleb looks really solid, I said last year AVB scuppered any chance of top four so it made sense for Sherwood to give games to guys like Bentaleb to get them up to speed and give them a chance, Kane as well. better than wasting games on Sandro who is just **** and Paulinho who is pointless.

Poch making the right moves, unfortunately. Sherwood got the offence ticking again, Lamela has come in to supplement and improve that, Chadli now looking good with everyone else playing together better. Still think it's harsh on Sherwood, he would likely have bought some CB's had he been in charge and he would have played Lamela as well(he was afaik injured from basically when Sherwood took over?).

If the offence is as good as the second half of last season if not a better but with the defenders actually being good Spurs could be contenders for top four. If Adebayor gets injured though they look lightweight upfront unless Soldado can get some form back or they sell him and buy someone else.

It's really irritating when a manager you know, addresses the weakness by buying the players the team needs rather than buying another player in a position you have covered :(

Spurs have bought well and addressed the biggest problem areas, Everton have bought very very well and again addressed most of their main problem areas. Liverpool..., they've addressed areas that were problems, a couple strikers, but one is limited and the other temperamental, they've bought fullbacks, and some midfielders but I'm not sure they've bought really proven quality, they may have I just literally haven't seen enough of any of them. COuld turn out to be great buys or poor, but at least they are buying where they had problems and that is key. At least seeing the problem and TRYING to fix it is the first step, having a manager who ignores the glaring problems every single god damned season is more frustrating than anything else.

Chelsea addressed their biggest problem, lack of key striker, and replaced old for new very very well. City... they needed a better CB and bought one, though I'm not actually sure how good he is. Midfield wise I haven't been that impressed by Fernado yet. Their biggest weakness I feel is lack of genuine pace down the wings where Nasri/Silva hurt them. Navas was a step but not great quality for me. They may well see Jovetic as left wing with Aguero upfront when he's fully fit again, which may fix that problem. They haven't done poorly though.

Utd are buying where they need, just not enough of it yet. Hell Newcastle bought what they needed, again will take time to show if they bought well or not but again they saw the problems.

Arsenal can't see LB, a striker, or a really top DM being a problem so did nothing about them........ woooo. Almost the only team in the top half to ignore their biggest weaknesses and do absolutely nothing about them. That cost us in the FIRST ******* WEEK.

Gibbs out for a while, Giroud out for maybe 4 months not, a week of the season it took before Arsenal were ****** by Wenger's ignorance of what is wrong in the team.

Can't help but agree, volatile but if managed correctly - you lot got a great player on the cheap.

We've done some good business too, just a little worried at our last 20 minutes in our first games this season.

That depth!

And you haven't even included Steven Naismith in either line-up! Didn't realise Everton's overall squad was that strong.

Looks a decent side but I think both Mata and RVP's places should be in real danger. Both deserve time but I would be interested in swapping Mata with either Kagawa or Januzaj and RVP with Welbeck or Wilson.

Mata I assume must be better than he has shown for us, so I would expect more from him in a side that is actually playing well. But I also think Kagawa would deserve a chance, should Mata fail to improve.

My bigger concern is RVP. The more I see of him, the more I think his legs have gone. And I also feel that Welbeck is probably one of those players who helps the rest of the team play, rather than doing a lot by himself. Certainly his speed and work rate would compliment Mata/Rooney better. And Wilson...I suspect that in a balanced, in form side that he could excel and be a revelation.

Im not sure how good Rojo is, but Jones will still be a liability even given 6 months imo ( and with his injury record I cant see him lasting that long consistantly). Also not convinced Jones can be the required leader of the defence he would need to be ( in this time frame)

Would like to see how Carrick does with two real quality players next to him in mf but its going to be tough getting back after such a long injury mid season ( and he rarely starts seasons strongly)

No problems at all re the top five ( and even the replacements for Mata and RvP) but I have very little faith in that defence unless Rojo can step up to the plate immediately and blow everyone's expectations out of the water

The journalists covering Juventus in Italy (who people call very reliable), are saying Vidal is already half way out the door. Juventus fans are having a meltdown. Fingers crossed, eh. :p
