Why announce it already with two finals to go for atletico?

It hasn't been announced officially, the Sky article even says "The deal with Costa is not expected to be formally announced until early June, after the big two games he is fighting to be fit for."

That being said, transfer deals like this involve a lot of people (on both sides), and have a lot of media interest, so it's hard to keep a lid on it 100%. If Chelsea have any class at all they will stay silent on the matter until after the CL final. That's really the best that they can do.

This is what I mean though - Southampton don't need to sell them and don't want to sell them.

This position I can understand completely. But its not as though they're players that will be out of contract next summer. They both signed new ones last season. So if people don't want to pay up for them, they don't move on. Same if they try and stall a deal until the end of summer leaving us no time to find replacements. If they don't do the deal in good time, they don't get the player.

If I had to choose to keep one it would be Lallana. As the captain and key player, he'd be a big loss. Shaw would be a massive sale for 1.5 seasons of service and we seem to produce left backs for fun :p

How certain are you regarding the need and desire to sell? I can't say I have a detailed understanding of what's going on at Southampton but a lot of the talk in the last 6 months has been fairly negative regarding the ownership and the club's ambition post Cortese. There was reports a month or so back that you'd lost £20m odd and that this shortfall would need to be made up going forward.

Purely from a financial point of view you could afford to hang on to Shaw for another season or two without taking much of a financial hit on any future sale but I get the feeling it's now or never for Lallana if you want a decent fee. Every year he gets older the likelihood of a club offering anything like £20m diminishes. There's not a huge market for him and if he doesn't have a great season again next season I can't see anybody offering a decent fee for him again.

edit: and it looks like the BBC report was true. The Liverpool Echo are reporting that we bid £20m today, with Southampton reportedly holding out for around £25m:

I wouldn't be surprised to see Courtois taking another year on loan at Atletico as a part and parcel of this deal.

Absolutely, I can't see Chelsea being ready to replace Cech just yet, but in a year definitely.

Courtois is some keeper as well, not bad to have lined up to be your number 1 for many years.

Rio has to be one of the best CB's in the past 10 or so years. The only other CB who had it all was Nesta.

It's going to be weird watching United next season, wholesale changes incoming. I'm expecting Evra to be the next one to leave with Shaw supposedly being wanted.

United wouldn't go wrong if they were to go for Hummels. They need an experienced player alongside a Jones/Smalling.

Last few years have been ruined by injury

Years before that I would agree with.

Evans will be 1st choice imo along with a new CB. Doubtful it will be Hummels unfortunaly

Rio no legs gone, Moyes gone, Giggs gone (well he is assisant now) looks good for United next year add in the Liverpool effect where we will have long periods of rest and it looks good.

Now to go get a back four of Rafael Jones Hummels Shaw and a world class midfielder. If Toni Kroos comes you can kiss goodbye to the Premier League for the next decade because that will be the best back four in the league.

If Toni Kroos comes that will be the best back four in the league? Makes sense. Firstly any defence with Rafael AND Jones cannot be considered the best in the league...secondly Kroos is a decent enough player but I'm not sure United need players in his mold. Someone who can sit a bit deeper would be more beneficial in my opinion.

Yeah, I have no idea how Kroos makes a back four the best and as yet Jones hasn't shown anything to suggest he'll be the best around. Most entertaining face, sure, maybe most likely to replace Vidic/Terry in doing fish impression while lying down in front of goal and headbutting the ground... definitely, but best, nope.

Hummels is also relatively prone to mistakes, but a massive step up from what they have. A huge bid for Varane would be a very good bet and, a bit early to think Stones will be the best around but for his age/experience he was exceptional this season, truly exceptional.

Rafael is a flake, he'll get a red card in a key game and ruin a season, and pick up multiple injuries. he concedes a lot of freekicks and hasn't moved any of the rashness out of his game at all. Shaw has a huge amount of potential, but that back four at current levels wouldn't be the best line up in the league.

Frankly Jag, Distin, baines and Coleman is better, if City buy a top notch CB to go alongside Kompany, they'd improve an already better back four. Coleman/Zabaleta are better defensively and offensively than Rafael IMHO, both less reckless. Kompany has had dodgy spells this year but is top notch still. Better than Jones by a damn mile.

Demichelis has been unfairly under rated this season, he's had his dodgy moments for sure, but it's his first year in the league and with this team. Very rarely is a defence or defender brilliant in their first season with a club(another reason why Utd wouldn't be better with 2 new players straight away, that is before you consider Jones/Rafael being injured fairly often). He has come on leaps and bounds though, Demichelis finished the season in very very good form.

Arsenal have crap fullbacks, simple as that, against Chelsea/Liverpool we were torn new ones for a reason, out of position/hopeless fullbacks. Chelsea are another team though with a top notch back four. Terry has been fantastic this year, Ivanovic is one of the best CB's and RB's around, him who no one should try to spell has been fantastic this year and Cahill has had a fantastic season.

Utd with Shaw/Jones/Hummels/Rafael would be for me, the 4th best defence if lucky, maybe 5th best and relies on two huge buys and two players being not injured so often.

Well currently we have the 5th best defence and that is with no protection from midfield at all and an ageing and ever changing defensive lineup.

You can also bet your house on the right half of that quoted defence being injured for a huge chunk of every season as well (Raf & Jones)

Jones certainly is not ready to be 1st choice centre half, and Rafael needs some decent competition for the RB slot to try and temper his red mists.

It's been "on" all season if you believe the rumours, but in financial terms - Costa for Luiz? Absolutely. No brainer. Chelsea have a wealth of defensive talent, but no world-class strikers. Costa would be perfect, as long as he can adapt to the Premiership.

I'd bet that Atletico are kicking themselves that Costa's release clause wasn't put higher; he could easily have commanded £40m+ - but then Atletico couldn't have predicted how well how would step up to the gavel after Falcao's departure.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Courtois taking another year on loan at Atletico as a part and parcel of this deal.

I'm not sold on Costa but to be honest I've only seen him play a couple of games in which he was relatively quiet, he can't be worse than what we have though so he'll do.
He also looks like a right horrible sod which is something we need up front, our strikers and other attackers just aren't mean enough.

I though Courtois might stay on loan for another season but after Cech's dislocated shoulder that might change. That sort of injury for a 'keeper is something which may never right itself so starting the season with him and what we have already is dodgy.

Phil "run into things" Jones, Mats "give the ball away" Hummels, and reckless Rafael? Sure.

I'm with you on Costa. I must admit I don't watch La Liga religiously every weekend but every time I see Costa, he always flatters to deceive but whne you look at his stats, he does score in key games. His closing down play as a lone striker will prob suit Jose's tactics mind
