Tricky situation for Southampton, if rumoured fees are true they're being offered very good prices for both of those players so I don't know if it's worth them holding out for more this season. They've just got to make a judgment call as to whether £50m will improve their squad despite losing their star players.

As to the price of Shaw it is a lot but United have brought this on ourselves by letting things get to this stage, we weren't willing to strengthen from a position of strength so we can't complain if clubs try and get a few extra quid out of us now they know we're desperate.

If £80m (reported in the red tops last week) is accurate then you can look at Lallana, Lukaku, maybe even Benzema. Perhaps even all three on just losing Suarez. Torres might even be available ;)

Surely it would be worth it at that point? Yes, he's guaranteed points/goals, if he plays. One long injury and because he's only one man you don't have the strength in depth you'd have on losing him and redistributing the wealth.

Costs more in wages, mind.

Suarez is the one true world class player Liverpool have - possibly in that bracket of player behind Ronaldo and Messi. You can't replace class like that and I'm sure they'll be doing everything in their power to ensure he stays.

He looked genuinely upset after the Crystal Palace collapse, which suggests his heart is very much in the club at the moment - perhaps a summer away with some other overseas team-mates might change that though.

I'm sure he's now got a cast-iron clause in his new contract, but will it be to be sold at any point in that contract, or if Liverpool don't meet certain standards (ie qualifying for the Champions League)? I suspect it's the latter.

The only club that will get him is RM and even then it will take 100million, personally think it wouldnt be the right fit for him either (RM's personel and his style of play dont mesh together imo), we can offer him CL football and a shot at titles now too so in theory, why would he want to go elsewhere? His family seem settled too.

Money wise, I think we can go for who we want quite comfortably (obviously not quite top echelons ala the oil clubs), but compete for the players in the 30-40 mill bracket.

As too potentially replacing him, not possible for me.

I think you're being a bit too optimistic with talk of 100m... something around 70m is probably more realistic for what you'd get for him if Real come knocking.

I think £81m was the price discussed previously, and seems about right. Is he better than Bale? I'm not sure, he's certainly up there though.

Would he be right for Real is a whole other question, and I'm not sure he would be. I'm sure he'd do well, but I don't think he'd be right for them.

This is what I mean though - Southampton don't need to sell them and don't want to sell them.

This position I can understand completely. But its not as though they're players that will be out of contract next summer. They both signed new ones last season. So if people don't want to pay up for them, they don't move on. Same if they try and stall a deal until the end of summer leaving us no time to find replacements. If they don't do the deal in good time, they don't get the player.

If I had to choose to keep one it would be Lallana. As the captain and key player, he'd be a big loss. Shaw would be a massive sale for 1.5 seasons of service and we seem to produce left backs for fun :p

Maybe Southampton want to get their major deals (in and out) done early, so that they can get the whole squad together as soon after the WC has ended and get them working together asap - rather than waiting for the last minute and possibly losing their own targets.

Its a very fine balancing act I admit.

I just cant see LS, Ronaldo and Bale working well in one team. Ronaldo and Bale work because the latter (so far) has no ego, but CR wants to be the centre of attention, and I cant see LS being any different at RM , Im also not convinced that LS would be as generous at RM as he has done this year at Liverpool.

I agree that £100m is unrealistic.

I think you also have to factor in his age with the sale price as well... Bale had only just turned 24 when he was sold - he has the majority of his career ahead of him. Suarez is 27 now... No old fogie by any stretch, but it's likely he has 3 to 4 fewer seasons in him than Bale did when he was sold.

A players resale value drops dramatically after they turn 30, so there's that to consider as well. That's still a long way off for Bale, but less so for Suarez, so the investment is more short term.

I agree that ~£80m is a realistic ceiling. I'd guess more like ~£70m as being realistic, but when Real decide that they want a player money seems to be no object.

JM has said a lot about Torres recently and most of it points towards him staying :(

Yeah, I read some of it :(

I can only hope that he's putting up a front to try and get *something* for him. If it seems that Chelsea are just desperate to get rid of him then we may end up with a pittance in transfer fee and paying a portion of his wages for the next couple of years.

Mind games, Jose? Please?!

Question for Liverpool fans:

- Do you think that you will hold on to Suarez this season? And if not, how big of a blow would it be to your team?

It seems that he would fetch somewhere around £60-£70m if he leaves for Real... This would go a long way towards building a solid squad to cover for next seasons cup rotation. Of course his leaving would still be a blow, but would the presence of Sturridge and Sterling make the money a more attractive bet, now that you need to compete in Europe again?

How much money would be "enough" to justify losing Suarez?

[genuine question btw - I'm not trolling for an argument here]

I honestly dont know if he will stay or go. The one thing that has changed compared to last summer, is that if he opted to go this summer, he would go with my blessing whereas last summer he would have gone with my curses. In my books he has repaid his dues to us with his performances this season and I couldnt begrudge him a move if he so wished.

Would it be a blow, again, Im not so sure. We perform pretty well when he isnt playing so maybe not as much of a blow as some may think. He is undoubtedly world class but I think there are several players out there who could be bought with the money and would potentially improve the team overall. Just as long as the money is spent wisely and isnt just thrown at whichever names happen to have a good world cup.

I like how people talk about realistic.... none of these figures are realistic, they're all ridiculous! However, supposedly his release clause is £100m now that we've qualified for CL (as opposed to £70m if we hadnt) and so I cant see him going for anything less than that due to the fact that we simply wont want to let him go unless we're forced to.

Thanks Tombstone - seems like a nice balance view of things :)

Release clause or not, it's very hard for me to see him going for close to £100m, at age 27. But with Real, who knows...

Eh... I'd be happy enough with that. £32m will give some leeway on the FFP front, and I've never much liked Luiz. When he's playing well he can be immense, but he makes a lot of daft errors for a player of his quality. Plus his insistence on taking every long range free kick directly, and skying 90% of them, is getting a bit old.

Let him have his time at Barca while we move on to greener pastures. I'd take Matic over Luiz any day of the week in the defensive midfield role.
