Arsenal missing out on a striker again.

LOL dear god the transfer window hasnt even opened yet and Costa isnt the only striker in the world thats available.

There was never any chance of Costa going to Arsenal.

Yep, think it was nailed on for most of the season that Costa was going to end up at Chelsea. If the fee is true then Chelsea really got a good deal for him but i reckon there is more to it ie Torres will probably go the other way despite Mourinho saying he has a future at Chelsea.

Wonder what will happen to Lukaku now, will he be sent on loan again or will Mourinho take a gamble on him and play him for Chelsea next season.

How certain are you regarding the need and desire to sell? I can't say I have a detailed understanding of what's going on at Southampton but a lot of the talk in the last 6 months has been fairly negative regarding the ownership and the club's ambition post Cortese. There was reports a month or so back that you'd lost £20m odd and that this shortfall would need to be made up going forward.

Purely from a financial point of view you could afford to hang on to Shaw for another season or two without taking much of a financial hit on any future sale but I get the feeling it's now or never for Lallana if you want a decent fee. Every year he gets older the likelihood of a club offering anything like £20m diminishes. There's not a huge market for him and if he doesn't have a great season again next season I can't see anybody offering a decent fee for him again.

I can understand, with Lallana's age, why we might be prepared to let him go ahead of Shaw. I'd rather keep Lallana, but that's just me. I think it would be more of an acknowledgement that he is further along in his career than Shaw and has given us a fantastic service, so it would be with good wishes that he'd be allowed to leave.

We owe £20m in transfer fees this summer without having bought a player as I understand it. I expect we'll be getting rid of Osvaldo though which will at least get a good chunk of that back.

Since Cortese left, ambition of the owners and new directors etc has been questioned a lot and until we see some positive news on Pochettino's contract, I suspect it will remain. I remain positive that the board do want to try and kick on from what has been achieved this season and there have been a some strong rumours (albeit on a Saints messageboard from ITKs :p ) that Pochettino is signing a contract with Shaw staying at the club but Lallana being allowed to leave as above.

Southampton, through Cortese, were one of the few clubs that opposed the FFP initiatives. That's because Cortese wanted to throw money at everything to take us to the top. Understandably, the owner wasn't that sure of this and they parted ways. That's not to say though that there is no ambition. If there was no ambition at all and she just wanted to dismantle the club, I doubt a few of the appointments upstairs would have been made that have been.

As you can see, I'm trying to remain positive :p

Well currently we have the 5th best defence and that is with no protection from midfield at all and an ageing and ever changing defensive lineup.

Why does improving your defence automatically mean you become a better than other teams though, it doesn't work like that.

Jones is worse than Rio/Vidic so that is a backwards step, Hummels vs Vidic... meh, he is better but vidic had that ability some players have to avoid red cards so that might end up even :p

Fact is the line up he gave doesn't strike me as better than City, Everton or Chelsea. If Arsenal ever buy fullbacks who can defend it would transform our defence and we conceded less goals than Utd this year. Palace only conceded 3 less than Utd, Southampton only three more and are strengthening themselves.

You're losing probably 3 senior players, leaders in the dressing room and training pitch. Hummels is experienced and good but Rafael, Shaw, Jones aren't going to replace that experience or leadership in defence any time soon.

But I still fail to see what Kroos has to do with it, Guardiola tried to play him in the Javi Martinez/Swine role.... and Bayern looked the worst I've seen them in 4 years. He's an attacking central midfielder who isn't particularly good. He's not going to help the defence at all.

Is his contract release clause not £32 million? :p, so Chelsea are paying as little as they can get away with?

Nope I believe that it's different in Spain, every player must have a minimum release clause in their contract and if it's offered then the clubs have to except.

I know full well about release clauses in Spain. A buying club offering the amount set in the contract does not force the selling club to sell. The only way that these clauses are legally enforceable is if the player himself pays the amount set in his contract to his club (via the League).

My comment about Liverpool was not referring to Suarez but Liverpool's bid for Diego Costa.

Can a club literally give the money to the player to buy himself out?

According to Wikipedia Costa is already a Chelsea player... :D.

I have no opinion on the move, other than Costa is a class player, but will be Costa be joining Hulk and Falcao at Cheslea? :D.

would be good business for athletico if they can win the league and then sell costa at a massive profit, then just relax into third place again next season while madrid and barca mount up massive debts to try and take the title again.
how long is barcas transfer ban now?

i dont see why falcao would leave monaco to play at chelsea... monaco are building a class team at the moment, and he must earn so much more being there and thats what football is about right? ....

No, no you misunderstood me.

Previously, both Hulk and Falcao had 'agreed' and 'moved' to Chelsea.
