Transport Fever

I really love the game, but there are so many QOL improvements that could be made, along with better tutorials and stat screens that I can't help think that early access would have been ideal for 3 months with this one.

The most glaring thing for me is when I create a new vehicle, I should be able to start it at any stop on a route, not have to let it cycle round the whole way or mess with the reverse button after it has left the depot.

I found a good seed on the Steam forums. USA is a large map, medium hills. It has several rivers, two lakes and some very handy crude oil\fuel which you can easily set up.

I think it does if you select that stop first when setting up the line?

It depends where the depot is I believe. For example if your depot is on the route between stop 1 and 2 then the vehicle will go straight to 2. I make sure I put them the other side of stop 1 so they go there first, if that makes sense..

I got it for £20.23 from GreenMan, had a bit of a play around with it earlier but I think I need to do the tutorial. I set up a bus line around a small town but there was no passengers at all, it went around 4 times and still no one was getting on. I couldn't work out why it wasn't working.

Buses on their own won't generate any profit. What you need to do is build a train line between that city and another and then use the buses to transport passengers to the station. Remember that you will also need a bus service at the other end to take passengers from the station into the town.

It's very rare that one service on it's own will generate profit in this game. You need to network everything.

Pick two towns which are very close to each other and the ground between the two is fairly flat. Place a train station at each town and bus station next to each station. Set one train on the line with two carriages and then create a bus route in each city with 4 buses \ stage coach. This will get you started, when queues start to build up send the the train back to the depot and buy another carriage.

While you waiting for this to happen start looking at industry and see if you can find a grain and livestock farm which is close to a food processing plant. Set up a line between the farm, plant and the nearest town.

Ok thanks, just trying to get the hang of it at the moment, it's quite complicated.

Honestly the game doesn't do a great job of explaining how it all works. It's much more complicated than TTD and I had to a do a lot of experimentation before I found out what works and what doesn't.

I've normally found these to be too far away from each other, at least on my maps to date.

I've found that a stone quarry shipping to a construction factory is easier to find on a map and they're normally closer to each other.

Same principle, ship the stone to the factory and then ship the construction materials into the nearest town(s).

One of the tricks to the game is to make sure the supply chain flows all the way to the end. So if you're shipping goods into a town, make sure it's being delivered within the town once there, otherwise the links in the chain before will see their production drop off and finally the demand for the first material will be reduced.

Check out Clumsy Geek on YouTube, he's recently put up 5 30 minute episodes where he's slowly putting together a number of supply lines and bus routes etc.

Currently loving the game, but I find that time within game passes to quickly for me. I think I'll try one of the mods over the weekend that makes a day last 8 seconds.

Starting to get the hang of this but I've now got two trains on the same line and it's broken. I have two tracks with crossing points and signals before the crossing points. Both trains are now stuck at either end with 'waiting for clear path'. The joke being that they are on different tracks so if they just went straight forward and back it would be fine.

I find it some times helps if you bring up the "Lines" dialog window, this will then display the lines on the tracks/roads etc. along with the direction arrows. It might help to show you where the problem is.

yeah take a look at the video i posted a page or two back shows how you can use the lines overlay to see what is going on and how signals can help.

Sorted the train problem but I'm very disappointed how the trains route in the game, hopefully they fix it. When you route a train even if you have two sets of tracks it will stick to one track regardless, it will also pick the same side of the station if you have more one platforms. So when I added a second train to the line they both tried to use the same side of the track despite a whole track free. I had to put passing places onto the second track so it waits for the other train to pass then goes back onto the main line. Absolutely ridiculous. With regards to getting food into a town by train. Does the station just have to be by the town for it to work? Or do you need to then truck it into the town?

You need to deliver the goods by truck, so put a truck stop next to the station and then deliver to a bus stop in the town. As for the tracks make sure you get your signals sorted correctly.

Ok thanks, I'm pretty sure signals were correct it's because of the way trains route and they had to go to certain platform and along certain track. I'll post some screenshots tonight, try to show you the problem.

You will find if you start using the way point track tool (when laying track select signal and it is next to the signal option) and place it on which track you want a certain line to run it will always stick with whatever track you designate it to. Otherwise, if you have more then 1 line going from and to the same location, both lines will always use the shortest route, not necessarily the most convenient route or indeed separate both lines. IMO you should use at least one of these way point markers (very cheap to build) on each and every route you plan. As for signals, they work as intended, I have played this game over 200 hours already and afaik everything works as intended, the only bugs are the users :P

Thanks for that, I'm not as bad as the people on the steam forums ..... honest. :p Even if that is the what they intended it to work it still isn't intuitive, if Sid Miers Trains manages to have trains clever enough to do that why doesn't this?

I think it's because the cargo system in this is more complicated. In Trains and TTD cargo doesn't care about where it goes so the stations just share one pools of cargo. In this they have a set destination so they have to be assigned to a line.

There do seem to be several options mission though which make it frustrating to work with. You can't assign lines to multiple platforms and you can't select what type of cargo you want picked up at each stop. Also there's no waypoints for trucks and busses which is really annoying because they seem to like sitting in traffic rather than using the bypass I built for them
