Triathletes

Agree with above about signing up for the event. That will be your biggest motivation. The fact you have friends taking part too will help to keep you motivated.

I went from no fitness to half-ironman distance in around 8 months.

I didn't join a tri club as I felt it would be giving up too much time, eg a 40 minute swim at my local pool versus a 30 minute journey each way for a 40 minute swim with the tri club.

I did all my training on my own apart from about 3 bike rides where I went out with my mates and about 4 open water swim practices.

I did find a lot of the time very lonely.

Anyway, I used this book to build a training plan, it's worth checking out:

I was part of a relay triathlon today; I did the swimming part (1mile) in 30mins dead.
It was my first time in open water and I constantly went off course which didn't help at all. I recon I could shave a lot of time off.

Going to reapply for next years and do the whole triathlon, not just 1 part. Training starts now huh. ;)

A little thread bump...

How's everyone getting on? Training for this year must have started by now!

I ran 8 miles in just over an hour the other day, blisters and crossing roads held me back a little. My roadbike arrives in a week or so...just in time for when the cold weather decides to 0121.

I started training again 2 weeks ago. Last year was my first season and I found out pretty quickly that the bike was my weakest part so this year I am concentrating a lot more on that.

I've done just under 175 miles in the last couple of weeks which is almost as much as I did the whole of last year (apart from races). I'm having my 2nd attempt at Ironman 70.3 in June. Last year I missed the bike cutoff by 2 minutes to record my first ever DNF.

Even though I want to spend a lot of time on the bike I still need to do a lot of running as I'm doing the Marathon of the North on 6th May.

I predict tired legs for most of this year!!!

Nice! Im so up for a ironman its untrue. Did clipsy say it took best part of a year to prepare? I might register for a 2013 event....assuming the world doesn't end.

Boshed out just over 10 miles this evening; feeling super strong with every session.

My training's been hit and miss over the last couple of months due to the amount of illness' I've picked up and the weather. Got my first HM this weekend but will only be jogging round as I just haven't done enough training. Got a trip to CLS in March with the club - looking forward to that! :D

I did about 10months of training, already had a fairly decent level of fitness. I think this would be more than enough as long as you stick with it :) Go ahead and register - you're committed then :D

Yea id have to go somewhere sunny to do one...;)
Err not TOO sunny though, it was 37C the day I completed mine :( awful weather to be completing an IM in!!

Did my first triathlon today, might not have been the fastest time ever but got the time I aimed for when I entered 4 months ago and the weather was a bit wild today,3c hail snow wind rain etc...........quite a few in hospital with hypothermia.

...i didnt leave the house today...thanks for making me feel lazy! :p

wanna share your times?? Congrats!

Swim 22.03.....bike 54.11.......run 31.08......total time 1.50.48.

750m swim, 22.5k bike and 5.5k off road run.

Like I said not a fast time but for an old chap who only started this exercise thing a year ago I am happy.

Got my first event this weekend. Sprint tri at stowe.

Also got my first tri suit this morning. An orca basic core that I got pretty cheap from wiggle. Little concerned about not having much/ANY padding.

Clipsy, what kind of kit were you using? Got a kit list that you used for IM?

Best of luck for the weekend mate :)
In terms of kit I kept it very simple, I didn't buy into the whole triathlete promotion. It is very much aimed at mid-life crisis middle aged men (who typically have a little bit of money to waste). I will always state it is the engine not the equipment.
That being said, here is what I used:
Speedo swim shorts and half mask
Trek race bike (just carbon fork and seat), upgraded the seat and pedals and added some aero bars (these are a true must!).
Then had some aasics running shoes (selected for my style of run).

Clothing: Padded shorts and cycle jersey with basic helmet, basic nike run shorts and running vest.
Supplements: Sports beans, electrolyte tablets + lots of water :D

Tried to keep it basic as you can see. There is noting more rewarding than on the last 5miles on the bike I was storming past people on $5k+ bikes on my $500 bike :D

You're only going to be on the bike for 30-40 mins, you dont need much padding.
I imagine it will be less uncomfortable cycling with no padding than it would be running with a lot of padding.

That is true, however doing a 40k with nothing is a little :/. I value my crown jewels.

Best of luck for the weekend mate :)

Cool, thanks! Im the opposite...anything new and shiny I need. Like the 910xt... could have saved a bomb.

I'll look into tribars but doesnt that wreck your body posture on a normal road bike?
