** TRIO OF WEEKEND BLOODY SILLY PRICES!! **

There's a review on hexus, 3x 90mm fans, but the default profile is a bit aggressive by the sounds of it so could dial it down if you wanted it quieter

I take it this card is an unknown quantity in terms of the average Joe owning one? The price is very appealing, but I'm concerned it may be loud?

I trust forum user reviews above any review site.

Anyone got any experience of Zotac RMA etc? I take it as you have to register for the 5yrs it won't be transferable like some? Gibbo do you know it this card uses a reference PCB or what?

Thanks

I use Nvidiainspector to set my max target temp. The 980Ti Zotac AMP! at load is ~71c, raising the target temp to ~76c would reduce the fan speed and noise.

It looks like a reference PCB according to the review linked earlier. I checked the RMA process before ordering and no, the warranty does not seem to be transferable. The Zotac RMA specifically mentions that the person the card is registered to is the only person who can RMA it.

I'll be honest, warranty transfer is nice when selling a GPU second hand, though it is not a massive difference in second hand pricing IMHO.

I could reduce the fan speed/curve with Afterburner but will the temps rise to the point where the card starts to throttle, that's the question. If the answer is yes, then it's another £120 to get it under water.

I would almost certainly guarantee it won't, reference 980Ti starts to throttle at 83-85c. So setting a less aggressive target temp of 76c would have zero throttling.

The best part was when gibbo said he is making no money on these. 500 units at £500 a pop and you arent making a penny? Pull the other one!

Take most reviews noise levels as a very rough guide on what cards are loudest etc. For example the sound levels you linked to show the R9 290X at 54db at load. An earlier review from the same site shows the same card at 42.5db. Most review sites use open case systems and they place the microphone very close to the actual cards. This is not indicative of a closed system at all to be honest.

The fact that the same site shows the same GPU (290X reference) at vastly differing noise levels shows they are not consistent in their testing methods. Or they have significantly changed them at some point.

Another thing to consider is that the 71c load temp allows you to use far less aggressive fan profiles than a reference 980Ti. This will reduce noise levels significantly just by allowing the GPU to run 5-9c hotter. Even then it will still run cooler than a reference 980Ti.

980Ti AMP! = 71c load
980Ti reference = 83c load

Here is the EVGA ACX 2.0+ 980Ti review from the same site. It is quieter but runs 5c hotter at 76c, allow the 980Ti AMP! to run at similar temps would give similar noise levels IMHO.

Thank you for the input, much appreciated ! :)

Only problem after checking what it all cost, incl shipping it turns out that the EVGA card you linked to I can buy here in Sweden for roughly the same price as the Zotac with shipping from OcUK. (Living in Sweden so the total would be £553 with EU tax and Shipping). Actually the Gigabyte G1 is only about £30 higher in price. So, even if it is an amazing price, with EU tax and Shipping it's not really that good for me, living outside of UK ... ahh well.. Once again, thank you for your input ! :)

Thanks mate.

I'll have to stew on this one. I swore I would skip this upgrade and wait for Pascal but this deal....

The AMD cards don't appeal to me as I have a Gsync monitor and surely Pascal is 9 months away at the least?

Listen to me trying to convince myself!

I'm having problems too. I was planning to wait for Fury to land before I did anything (this upgrade is a reward for gaining a new Job) but Gibbo has stuck a good spanner in the works - I hate and like him all at the same time.

Gibbo argh!!
