trying to get steady 4ghz

I tried to boot my PC with all the settings at stock and the RAM set to 1600MHz using the XMP profile. It still has problems. I'm tempted to think this could be the RAM.

It passed Memtest fine, but that was running at 1200MHz. I don't think it can be IMC if it won't even boot at stock settings for the CPU. I'm not stressing the QPI at all when it's on stock.

Set CPU back to 4GHz and RAM to 1200MHz and it all loads fine. No problems what so ever. Will just live with it like this, and get some Corsair RAM when I get some cash. Then I should be able to do something about this Patriot RAM.

The weird thing is, when I first set this all up last week, the RAM ran fine @ 1600MHz. It just froze the PC in Prime95. But at least it would boot. Now it doesn't and the POST screen flashes up an error saying the system failed to POST due to overclocked settings. Even at stock CPU clocks.

I would agree , its does not seem to be a IMC problem. You were at stock and the memory fails to reach its marketed speed with that voltage. Its not as advertised and i would look to RMA it personally. Obviously testing with mem test @ 1600mhz would show any problems. But i think people are forgetting you can not actually get it to 1600mhz boot-able to test.

Best of luck madindehead , I know you have been over and over this enough.

Haha yeah. I would Memtest it at 1600MHz but it won't boot oogiet. I set my CPU to stock, and set RAM to 1600MHz using XMP. Would not boot. When it does, it resets back to a stable setting. So can't Memtest it. I think I'll try to RMA the RAM first. Can't really RMA a CPU for a weak IMC.

Madindehead, it sounds like your having the same problems im having, my Patriot memory just doesnt want to run at anything higher than 1146mhz (x6 memory multiplier, with 191 blck). My system would pass 9 Hours of Prime (on Blend), 25 passes of LinX, and and hour of OCCT, all 100% stable no errors. Yet when i played a flash video from a webpage i could get my system to crash within minutes! I tried everything, in the end i (with help of others on my thread i made) came to the conclusion that it was (99%) the memory that was the problem, as i had everything at stock in the bios, the only thing i changed was i enabled XMP, so my memory setting were at there rated settings, and i still got a system crash when watching a flash video. Have you tried watch a flash video and seeing if it crashes your system madindehead?, i was watching video reviews from the site, gamespot, give it a go and see if you get the same results as i did.

I connacted OC about this via an RMA webnote, stating everything i tried and asked if there was anything i overlocked or anything else i could tweak, they just came back with asking me to send the memory back as 'faulty', so even OC's seem to think its a memory issue, i sure hope it is and not a weak IMC on the CPU. So im going to send my memory back for a refund, ill need to buy some more memory first before i send this cruddy Patriot viper back, this must be a iffy batch i guess as other people have had no poblems with Patriots. I just now need to decide as to what replacement memory to get, as for some reason OC's have removed the Patriot Viper memory from there shop, shame really as the Patriots looked nice with the GA-EX58-UD5 mobo :(

Just tried the video. Works fine. But the fact that I can't boot @ 1600MHz is annoying. I think it may have been a bad batch of Patriot Viper RAM.

I think I will be looking to buy some Corsair RAM. Will be a shame though, as yeah, the Patriot does look amazing with the UD5. I will see when OCUk get back to me on this.

I think I'm gonna follow your example lettuce and send this memory back, once I've bought new memory...any suggestions on really good ram? Wonder if it is worth looking into faster ram so that 1600 is not the peak...

They look pretty much the same, just dominator has better cooling and slightly faster, I have had dominator 1066 memory before on an older pc and ran like a dream. The only reason i got this memory was it came with the bundle...

Yeah. Thing is, that RAM has been amazing for everyone. Except us it seems. Probably a bad batch. As it seems we all bought it at the same time.

I will look into the Corsair Dominator @ 1600MHz. Just need some cash first. Was a slightly uncalculated expense =(

That's the annoying thing with things like this. You see it happen now and again, and hope it never happens to you. Not exactly their fault the RAM is faulty. It can happen however. Just **** annoying when it happens to you =(

The Corsair XMS 1600 6GB 3x2GB 9-9-9-24 2T will allow 4ghz clock at 1600mhz stable no problem. Personally i have heard people having more trouble with the Dominator versions than the XMS3 series.

However as some of you probably know from my thread that when increasing memory , like i have to 12GB then it becomes difficult to clock as high (4ghz) and run the entire 12GB @ 1600mhz. I believe this is where the IMC comes into problems.

I happily managed 4/4.2ghz @ 1600mhz stable with 6GB. Can managed only 3.7ghz and 1404mhz with the 12GB.

Just so you know.

Yeah ill probably go with the, Corsair XMS3 6GB or maybe give the OCZ Obsidian 6GB a go, just a shame it looks like crap compared to the Patriot ram, wonder why OC's stopped stocking it??

I think I will be sticking with 6GB currently. I don't really need 12GB to be honest. The XMS stuff looks like it's pretty good. I have to agree with lettuce however. I will miss the sexy blue Patriot heat sinks. Looks damn good with my UD5 =(

I'm currently sat at 3.6Ghz cpu overclock and somewhere around 1700mhz ram overclock, and my corsair xms 3 is hodling up fine...

I downclocked from 4ghz so i could reduce the temps :) had 1.29350v running through the cpu... not healthy i dont think :P
