trying to get steady 4ghz

Try not to get frustrated, it's a working process, maybe you should set your sights a bit lower (say 3.6 or 3.8) and start from there? :)

Hehe yeah. I did. And it still wouldn't even POST. But. I think I have fixed it. Ran some LinX last night, and it all seems ok. Ran some Prime95 this morning also. Only annoying thing is RAM running at 1200MHz instead of 1600MHz. But I was having problems with it hanging in Prime96 @ 1600MHz. Will try again later. Waiting to move it all over into my new case first. Then I will get down to business again.

I had mine all set up at stock and it failed IBT with high ram usage, turned out to be the patriot viper not wanting to run at 1600 and 8-8-8-24 2T. My next step is to maybe loosen the timings to 9-9-9-24 2T to see if that helps i think.

Yeah. I might have to change my timings. It was set at 8-8-8-24 2T also.

I don't know much about RAM timings however.

What would be a good choice to test @ 1600MHz. 9-9-9-24 2T?

Well i looked at the other 1600 MHz ram, like the ocz obsiden and corsair etc and they quote timings of 9-9-9-24 and got the idea from there. It seems the next logical step to get it stable at stock speed. I dont have my rig with me right now (at uni) its back home, let me know how you go on madinehead!

Ok. Just a little update. Was playing GTA IV just there. Alt-tabbed to check Skype, and it crashed on me. Sounds like the RAM. I tried to boot with the RM @ 1600MHz and 9-9-9-24-2 timings. Said the computer was having boot issues because of overclocking.

Sounds like it could be a bad batch of Patriot Viper RAM maybe? Seems to be having problems making it's 1600MHz.

When it crashed however, it was running at 1200MHz.

Edit: Just noticed, OCUk have removed the Patriot Viper 6GB kit from the website. What's the reason for this?

Those voltages are really high mate, 1.35v Vcore and 1.34v Vtt?

Have you tried playing with IOH Core, CPU PLL and QPI PLL?

I have my IOH Core at 1.140v, CPU PLL is at 1.300v instead of 1.800v as I read elsewhere that lowering this setting can help stabilize things, and I have my QPI PLL at 1.160v.

I've also got my CPU clock skew at 100ps, this setting is overlooked by lots of people, but it is something that can help quite a lot imo.

Before I started playing with these settings I needed quite a lot of Vcore and Vtt to get my 200x20 o/c stable, I needed to have my Vtt at 1.335v, and Vcore needed to be 1.2915v, but now I've now got my system perfectly stable with 1.248v Vcore, and 1.215v Vtt, it passes 20 runs of LinX using all available RAM, 14 hours of Prime 95 blend test, and I have been using my PC for gaming and general day to day usage for about a month now and I haven't had a single BSOD or crash.

::edit::

About your RAM, you are the second person I have seen on these forums who seems to be having issues running these modules at 1600MHz.

Then there are other guys who are running them at their rated speed with only 1.5v.

Remember though, that it isn't necessarily the RAM that is causing the problem, it could be your processors IMC that is weak, and it doesn't like running RAM at 1600.

Thanks for the heads up DavyBoy.

I will look into those other voltages also. I thought the Vcore was pretty high, but not had a chance to look at reducing it yet.

I keep forgetting about the IMC on the processor. I hope it isn't that =( Would be a real shame. Seems to be ok @ 1200MHz, and that should do me ok. I mainly game on this system, so shouldn't have too many problems.

There are so many voltages etc you can change on i7. All gets a bit much sometimes to focus on. Haha. Will look into it when I don't need the PC for much.

well i've got the same bundle and still encountering problems, mainly blue screens after 30-40 mins in Prime95. I think o/c is certainly an art and your mileage varies depending on the processor/memory you receive. I don't think each component has the same tolerance even when they are exactly the same.

It makes the OC paid for a bit useless in IMO. Has anyone got the paid 4.0Ghz overclock to work out of the box without any tweaking?

I think somebody should create a new post about the bundle and the mods should make it sticky.

ah, I just 'assumed', cause your spec is the similar to the bundle ;)

I do think the problem is with the memory though, it's just not a very good overclocker.

@ DavyBoy

Just noticed in your sig that you have a Be Quiet! PSU. What's the quality of it like? Good PSU? I like the look of the modular cables etc.

Sorry to go off topic slightly.

Going to test those new voltages now.

I bought my setup as a bundle and the ram will not work @ 1600... no matter how I tamper with settings I can get it stable for like 5-10mins on 4ghz and 1600mhz and then the pc either freezes or restarts. So much for paying for the 4ghz...LOL
