Turkey Grand Prix 2010, Istanbul Park - Race 7/19

McLaren had given both drivers to hold station till the end of the race.
This causes Hamilton to slow down and start driving within himself.
Button then decides it would be a good idea to try and overtake Hamilton. He succeeds.
Hamilton is shocked that Button is doing this, even though the order not to overtake has been given. He then fights back and puts Button firmly in his place. He even pulls out a big gap, in a very short space of time to show Button that he is much faster and not capable of driving as fast as him.

If Button doesnt want to follow team-orders then fair enough...but at least let his team and Hamilton know that he will not follow them. This keeps things fair.

What Button did was very cheeky.

Not at all. Button even said that he was saving fuel when he overtook Hamilton.

Button showed today he easily had the measure of Hamiltons pace.

considering we never saw hamiltons full pace thats a bold claim.

from the start of the race he was stuck behind a red bull and at the end when in free air he was given the slow down and added 1s onto his laptimes, button carried at his normal pace until he failed to hold his overtake at which point hamilton went back to his usual race pace and put 3s between them.

from free practice, qual and race result hamilton had the lead each time.

yet his sector times were the same as before the 'save fuel' radio came through while hamilton immediately slowed by about .3 a sector.

You seem to be forgetting Button was fastest in FP2

Maybe Button is better at saving fuel than Hamilton, just like Button is far better at calling his own strategy than Hamilton is.

mm, lots of speculation about what went on with Webber and Vettel.
Rumour now is that Webber was told to turn his engine down, and Vettel wasn't or was told to turn his engine up just before the overtake incident.

cue consiparcy theory.

Quite disappointed with Vettel there, I was really hoping for a third win from Webber. :(

Great racing from the two McLaren drivers towards the end, that was very exciting to see. Glad that they scored a 1-2 and Hamilton got his first win of the season. It was a great shame that Alonso caused Petrov a puncture; it was quite aggressive, but fair enough. Vitaly did a very good job today.

I'm wondering if this is actually a better result for Webber? Having the two of them level on points was always going to cause friction with each of them battling for the championship. Vettel down in 5th and although not out of it, it's cleared some space and tension I think.

He was only told it was crucial because Mclaren didnt want him having another go at there golden boy.

I don't buy that. It would have been interesting had Vettel and Webber not collided like that whether Button would have been told to let go of Lewis...

I think that if the Red Bull accident hadn't happened then the team would have let them race, they were just scared from seeing what had happened to their rivals.

Exactly. Thus the code phrase: "please conserve fuel". Which means, "Hold station till the end of the race, don't overtake/race eachother".

The only way to be sure would be to check just how much fuel Button had left in his car. If he had plenty, it means that there was no need to conserve fuel and that McLaren were telling their drivers to stop racing, using the code phrase, "Conserve fuel".
