Turkish Grand Prix 2011, Istanbul Park - Race 4/19

They can still do this with only one quali lap leaving extra tyres for the race.

Correct.

But this would be very risky. RBR could take the risk of using 1 run in Q3 and have Vettel (possibly) ending up in 2nd or 3rd on the grid. Then on race day, if he is not leading on lap 1, his chance of victory is all but gone. Remember, as has been seen over the last 12 months, he NEEDS to be time trialling. The moment he gets stuck behind another car or has to come through the field, he is nowhere near as dominant.

Put him at the front, with nobody holding him up and the guy is as at least as good as any other driver in F1. I've noticed that he is able to manage his car very well, when he is time trialling.

Either strategy is a risk - 1 Q3 run could result in a mistake/traffic and not getting pole. 2 or more Q3 runs will use up additional tyres and could put Vettel in a similar position to the last race. We have seen both strategies pay off for them previously, it is anyones guess which to go for this time - even more so with the limited running Vettel has had so far this weekend.

I would agree that he needs to be time trialling to an extent, but as we have seen this season, he has gotten better at overtaking cars now.

Whatever they decide, it is going to be a good quali/race for the fans, fingers crossed :)

The problem which we saw in the last race was that he wasn't leading on lap 1. This meant that there was not time trialling and he got bogged down. He wasn't able to open a gap (in his first stint), which is what he normally does. Had he led on lap 1, then he probably would've achieved this and gone on to win the race, even on the bad tyre strategy.

If I remember correctly, the overtakes that we have seen Vettel do recently have all been when Vettel is on fresh tyres and the person he is overtaking is on older tyres. IMO, this is not a fair overtake. Notice how last weekend, he was unable to overtake the cars in front of him, before the first round of pit stops. This was because they were all on a level playing field - tyre wise.

If I were Vettel, I would still want pole position above anything else. The other leading drivers do not suffer from this problem.
