TV Licence Super Thread

Thinking of cancelling my licence this week also. Since buying an amazon echo most evenings me and the mrs just listen to music and play with our son. The odd time the TV goes on its something on youtube or kids stuff on netflix. Where do you stand with radio in relation to the TV licence?

In Ireland if you have a tv you have to pay a tv licence, doesn't matter if you get a tv signal in or not. It's daft. Most of the money goes to the national broadcaster who pay ludicrous salaries to their presenters, oh and unlike bbc we have the added pleasure of ad breaks on our national broadcaster.

I cut the cord a couple years ago was 99% rubbish on TV and everyone knows it. I'm not gonna sell my TV, i am in my **** paying for a licence so living outside the law,

What is the penalty in Ireland? Over in the UK it is simply a fine and an unrecorded offence which you can plead guilty to via post. Not much of a deterrent!

Same just a fine, up to €1500 euro i think. Or 3 days behind bars if you'd rather not pay!

It's same as UK though inspectors have no right to enter your property so good luck proving you have a tv,

Just had a visit which got a bit heated

Officer /cough turned up today banging on my front door and I mean banging. Went round the back to see what the fuss was about to be greeted by a man with a handheld still banging on the door.

After I found out what he was here for I informed him that that we already filled in the online form that we do not use iPlayer or watch/record live TV. Got told "do you think we believe that" and he needed to check.

I refused him entry. He got rude and aggressive. Then said something like "Well you been warned"

Both of us kinda squared up and I asked what will happen. He then stated " you telling me you don't have a TV" and smirked.

Told him "I do have a TV but don't watch live TV". Then got told to "prove it".

Told him I don't have to prove nothing and asked him to leave the property which I had to repeat a few times with odd curse word as he wasn't complying with my request.

I know all very handbags at dawn lol but I just need to vent!! Lol

Probably painted a target on my back but not going to have some guy speak to me like that on my own drive.

Two questions...

1. Where is the video?
2. Why isn't it up on youtube yet?

Why didn't you just let him in? You have to still show you don't watch live TV. Is the arial plugged into the TV? Do you have sky? They will ask to turn on a live channel on the TV. I got a visit because someone at work grassed me up and they think you need a TV licence even if you have a TV. I haven't had a second visit yet. Got a card but I will gladly let them in if they turn up.

Why would you let a stranger in to your house. You really don't have to show them you don't watch live TV. They have to prove you watch live TV.

Problem I would have is avoiding a their word against my word situation.

I have an aerial on the roof, but you can clearly see the cable has been chopped and I don't watch iPlayer - however come in and you'll see devices that "could" be used to stream live content. How do I PROVE that I don't?

Therefore, if one showed up I would politely tell them to leave, or ignore them.

People declare they don't need a licence but stats say 1 in 5 need one. People have been caught and fined for watching live TV. I would rather for the sake of 5 mins prove I don't need one even though I declared it. Doesn't take a great amount of time.

In that case I don't know how you would prove you don't. That's up to you. Most people have devices that 'could' be used. It's all a faint line between how you do and don't prove it. They probably bully to try to get you do admit that you have watched it in the past.

He was banging on the front door. He was rude. He basically called me a liar he was agressive. He doesn't have any right to enter my home.

No... you do not have to prove that you ARE NOT doing something wrong.

They have to prove you a ARE doing something wrong.

If they ever visit me... I won't be co-operating.

Exactly... I've seen too many videos where they are complete and utter plonkers.

Poor little twits who think they've suddenly got a bit of power and don't like it when people push back.

Funny really...

If they're polite, I'll be polite and just say "no thanks, I'm not interested... cya later".

If they're like they were to you... they'll get the attitude returned.

That's fair enough. Each to their own.

Why would you let someone that aggressive and rude into your house? Why let a stranger come into your house and film it all and then walk away with that film. I used to let them in but don’t anymore as it’s not just 5 minuets and in my experience not worth doing.

I was only thinking yesterday with GDPR they no longer have any right to store information on you. You are not a customer and you have no contract with them. Why should they be allowed to bully you into giveing them video and personally data?
