They are sales people that work on commission. Its in there interest to work evenings and Saturdays.
They turn up in the middle of the day because that is when the people they target the most are likely to be home. The elderly. And single non working mothers etc. people that are easily pressured into letting them in and signing forms to incrimidate themsleves. Just look at the prosecution stats it's mostly women and pensioners

[ youtube still not sure why people waste time watching stupid guy with earnest expression spouting about license investigations - it's like watching Andrew Tate
Youtube Rule 101 being able to evaluate a video based on front cover ]

Poetic justic if their leading reality tv show strictly gets taken down by a #metoo scandal .. it's bordering on Saville myopia;
Whenever I see bites of Casualty seems like it is sponsored by the labour party with constant observations about nhs under funding, but maybe they/bbc know which way their bread is buttered.

I've recently bought a new TV and it turns our it's not been certified for iPlayer.

iPlayer is the only BBC product I can think of that I now use (and now, don't use).

Would I be within my right to cancel my TV license, at least until they certify my TV?

Why would they certify your TV?
You can watch live broadcast stuffs on a variety of devices.
If you don’t watch any of it, then either cancel and give no reason or tell them you don’t need one and you may get left alone for 2 years, then rinse and repeat.
Edit
Just to add, under absolutely no circumstances let those salesman into your home to check anything.

I am now almost 10 years deep in having a letter sent to me every week from the TV licensing thugs.
I am still waiting for the day they actually show up to my door.

Might have to go down the legal harassment route soon as I have a folder full of last 6 years worth of letters alone.

Put them all back in the post.

My son got a letter in the post saying his deceased mum hadn't renewed her license or whatever...

news articles suggest it happens often and upsets a lot of people

Filled out the online thing the other month, didn't give them any personal details though - they have us as "The Occupier" on the nasty letters, so didn't offer up anything more to them. Expect to still get hassle though - be interesting if our names suddenly start showing on their forms; being Capita, they'll have our details for our childcare stuff etc

That would be an immense violation of GDPR etc
