similarly parliament tv - hmmh license person hadn't heard of freeview channel bbc parliament - if you were watching the budget live or pm questions pretty high chance you'd be illegal.

Don't know anyone without a tv license .. even if 500K people apparently delisted last year, wonder how many other (real) people, those on here who say they haven't got a license, know
Olympics, european football and rugby, cycling tdf, the election !, watching these on catchup isn't the same, it's not like delaying some netflix cereal (sic)

will be interesting to see how many people were identified watching the olympics .. kinda like the riot arrests.

All sport related stuff can be viewed via highlight clips on the BBC News website legally without a license. That was sufficient for me.

There is a decent chance you know lots of people without a licence. Its not like its something most people bring up in every day conversation. A growing amount of people not only don't have a licence but don't have a TV or the TV is not there primary source of content. Many people keep track of the budget, PM Questions, election even Olympics without using a TV.

The situation is this (no need for "pretty high chance", it's 100% this):
- Parliamentlive.tv website - you can watch anything live or on-demand without needing a tv license, doesn't matter if it's something the bbc is also covering on their BBC Parliament tv channel.
- BBC Parliament tv channel - because this is "live tv" you need a tv license for watching live. If you watch on iplayer you also need a tv license even if it's catch-up.

As for people I know without a license, none for sure. The vast majority of people still watch live tv and therefore pay their license, although most think it's antiquated. The point of the 500k stat to show a direction of travel, the tv license is getting less popular over time.

Loads and loads of people have no interest in sports. I didn't watch any of the Olympics.
All I watch really is f1 and it's actually better to watch highlights after as most of an f1 race is empty.

Quite the drop off as streamers increase

@413x have you ever had a visit? And have you notified them?
A short story.

All was good.
I hadn't ever supplied them with my details. Used to get the typical letters.
Had a visit once as it was a hand written letter. But that was about 2 years ago. At the time I was working in the office and they came 9-5 lol.. So they got nothing.

I've lived at 6 houses in those years and only had a visit here (4 years lived here).

Then gf made a f up not long ago. She was using iplayer with her real details in and we got a letter through. Basically saying "pay up". It looked legit. I left her to deal with it. She paid for a few months out of her account and then cancelled. I told her to delete her account.

So they have her details now. I expect to get a letter at some point saying "do you need a licence".

I've little to no interest in watching sport, the things I do enjoy get better coverage from YouTubers than official outlets (wsm for example). I had no interest in the Olympics at all and almost all of what I experienced was via memes of hilarious crap like the Australian breakdancer.

I've zero interest in sitting watching parliament, political information is easier and quicker to read up on as necessary.

I've not had a licence in over a decade, to my memory I've had two visits during that time neither of which I bothered answering the door for. I've never given the BBC/capita my personal information and never will, it has nothing to do with them.

I'm 39, I'd say about a third of my friends don't have a licence. Half of those that do feel pressured to have one even though they don't bother with live TV and many don't even own a TV. The majority of the younger people that I know who have moved into their first homes don't have a licence and find live TV an old fashioned waste of time.

Seems like the latest ploy by TV licencing is sending out emails stating people have "been using iplayer without a licence". Even when people aren't using it. Then state that your status saying you don't need a licence is now invalid.

I had a letter to that affect and it just got binned.

I just pay mine by direct debit every year as I watch live TV and listen to Radio 5 Live. It’s only £169.50. I don’t watch a lot of TV and listen to radio more but I don’t see the problem in paying it if you do watch live tv.

Well I paid mine; don’t need the extra hassle of worrying about this as well. Even if they don’t show up. Don’t wanna worry about what ifs.

We cancelled our TV license a few weeks ago.

The other half only ever watched the news of and off during the day and we never watched any live TV (No Sky\Virgin just an TV aerial).

When it came up for renewal I said "You do realise we pay £167 a year to watch the news" and she said "sod that and we decided to cancel it.

Only thing she used IPlayer for was watching call the midwife at Christmas so so loss loosing that as well.

I never tend to watch any TV and just tend to put on movies from my Plex server when I want to watch something

You don't let them make you Worry, do you worry about junk mail posted to you or cold calling salesmen knocking on the door. They are exactly the same thing, they are trying to sell something by telling lies and trying to scare people. I have had enough letters from them now that the postage would have paid for a years Licence.

If a goon turns up, which is rare, they are salesmen. The only evidence they can get is by way of you admitting that you watch live tv. They will say something along the lines of "ok, no problem, just sign here to say you don't watch tv" and suddenly you are enjoying something called the single justice procedure where you turn up in court and are given a fine. They claim they will work with people to avoid this, but EVERY SINGLE CASE is brought before the court.

If a goon turns up, say "no thank you" and shut the door. No further conversation is required.

All well and fair enough. I’m here on a visa and thus prefer to just stay on the right side of the law. But in my home country I never paid the TV license in many years because they’re all a bunch of corrupt idiots. Then again the whole country is.
