Nope.

Before these changes it was just BBC channels.

You probably should look up the wording of the law since the inception of ITV back in the 60's.

It's always applied to any live TV channel, with the law updating when ITV started, then when Satellite and Cable TV started.

As has been said the latest update was to cover the Iplayer in full, closing a loophole that had appeared in the last 10 years or so.

I wonder what would happen if a child accessed bbc iplyaer using their mobile phone without parents knowledge? If the parents didn't have a license?

Nothing?

But IF they did find out about it and the IF they decide to pursue it, surely it would be treated no differently from a child grabbing sweets in a supermarket and munching on them before their parents catch them. I would imagine in situations like these, the parents are held accountable.

Like before when pirating music was a big thing and some parents are charged hundreds after kids went on blatant file download and sharing sprees.

It is possible to be on the iPlayer site without streaming any content.

Exactly - which is why its all a bit of tosh!

If the best the BBC could do in the first place was a simply 'yes' or 'no' button to decide if you have a TV license, then they aren't going to have some ground breaking bandwidth-traffic-pattern-magic-analysis-didgeridoo which is able to magically intercept your internal traffic in their hands like some seem to believe

Entering a unique code tied to your license / your license number is the only way to enforce this (5 device rule a la Sky, Virgin Media, ...).

You know what annoys me. Having to pay virgin for my TV, then having to pay BBC again for it.

I'd much prefer to lose BBC channels and not have access to these channels and not have to pay license fee. I hardly watch TV as it is, and I pay loads for the limited use I do use it.

Yeah I'm in the same boat, only with BT. I have BT vision but also pay the license fee, very annoying. I recently checked into Virgin 200MB Internet and TV package but at £80 per month they can do one!

The TV license is a tax, a form of nationalised industry subsidy but they wont scrap it because of the news element side to it. BBC is respected around the world, it ties into commonwealth links and trade benefits.
Its got wider political support, if it was just eastenders it would be gone already. I really think they dont want to scrap it when some of the old behind the iron curtain countries have some modicum of respect what is broadcast and there is influence and some power in its continued existence.
Its not supposed to be biased but its definitely British, you only have to look at the mess of USA reporting and news and comedy is their news :D , bias is massive in most countries news

The news on the BBC is certainly biased in some respects, its not blatent, but it is 100% biased when you think about it, but the opinions are being delivered in a subtle way so many not realise, and that is the worst type. It's conditioning people without them knowing.

All media outlets have a bias, they aim to keep viewers. Like all media outlets, they are held somewhat accountable by their readers, so they aim to show content which stirs the emotions of their followers. The BBC just has a much, much larger and varied following compared to other outlets, so you dont tend to get as extreme of view being put ac cross.

If you feel that it has been more bias in recent years, it is just that your views have remained more or less the same, while theirs has somewhat drifted to keep catering to their ever changing broad audience.

If you use it, pay for it. What's hard to understand?

Agreed. Some people think it's clever to buck the system though and I understand why because the system is often unfair, but that's life. I pay my license fee reluctantly and to compensate I sometimes hire the odd hooker.
