I think the only reason the politicians don't do anything, is because they generally won't touch anything divisive. They would rather endlessly kick the can down the road. How many years I have heard them say "it needs to change" and yet they sit there doing nothing. They are almost as useless as the BBC itself.

It’ll probably be an expensive thing to do. Is there even a way for authentication to be implemented over the broadcast network? Or would be need to replace that network with something else?

The BBC can do what they do in America - have adverts. I mean it's slightly sick to me that there are free BBC channels in the USA but not in the UK. They know how to do this, they are doing it already. They just need to do it here.

Is it desirable for the BBC to be funded by adverts? Is there a national consensus as to how we want to fund the BBC?

Even if I'm conflating two things, it still winds me up - because there's always resource to enforce nonsense BS like TV licenses and other crap, but serious issues (dangerous assaults) which require the same resource (police and courts) are just ignored completely, it's all backwards and stupid.

Fully agree and I would like to add the needlessly clogging up the court system. Last time I looked which was a long time ago, it was over 10% of cases. A massive amount of court time is wasted on this. Which could be better spent on more serious matters.

BBC News was removed from Freeview already, so arguably it has already started.

The whole thing is crass, though.

The way they make you legally declare you don't use something, whilst threatening prosecution - over something as unimportant as the ******* TV, and the muscle they bring to bear over it - it's totally disproportional and not in line with modern societal norms.
 
While we're moaning about the BBC :) why are they so obsessed with the murder of the health care exec in the US? Yes of course it's terrible news but I'm not sure why the BBC seem so focused on a death in anoter country.

EDIT: Nope I'm not watching the news.

IMO anything SD is unwatchable.
News has the special requirement of displaying text on screen, so if anything I'd argue the clarity is even more important.

Yes but surely no one here is advising to ignore a charge notice? That would be madness as it needs to have your precise name on it.
The only thing I think people here are referring to is the standard generic letters that are sent out on mass. A charge notice will have your court date etc on it to give you an opportunity to put your side before the court so no one here in their right mind would advocate ignoring that!?

A very good friend of mine had a visit from the TV license folk early this year. He invited them in and all they did was go over to his smart 55" TV and using the remote check for live TV channels. When non came up they thanked him and left and that was it. He has heard nothing from them since.
