Tyre Nichols murder

Like if an 18year old bloode cheerleader ran away in her handcuffs, then they tazed her, would they then catch up then kick her in the head and beat her for several minutes?

I personally don'tn think that would happen.

That's more likely to be down to her being female than being blonde (and presumably by implication white?).

I suspect a Latino or white guy of the same age, same socioeconomic background, driving the same car, wearing the same clothes and in the same neighbourhood would be treated in the same way by those same officers if, upon being stopped, he ran off and they had to chase him...

In rough neighbourhoods police in the US are prone to being more aggressive and the biggest factor here is likely the chase.

Quite possibly, the closer they fit a typical profile, the more boxes they tick, the higher the chances of being prejudiced. Male, skin colour, gender, age, way the dress, way they talk, way they act.

The absolute gymnastics required to make this white man's fault is Olympic gold worthy.

I don’t think there was any suggestion here that this was the ‘white man’s’ fault.

There is definitely a valid point of discussion on ethnic vulnerability generally, which shouldn’t be brushed off as “you’re suggesting white people are bad” - that’s not what’s being said.

Going back to my ‘ageist’ example: a mugger may target elderly people because they are vulnerable. The mugging would not be an ‘ageist’ crime. Yet the age would be a factor.

Likewise, in the matter at hand it’s not illogical to consider that the victim was treated this way because of how he was perceived.

I have already stated in the thread that I think being white would make me less likely to receive unfair treatment from the US police. If you can detect similar thoughts in yourself, then you should be able to appreciate that somebody who is not white may face a higher likelihood of unfavourable treatment.

^ and that is not the same as saying this incident is ‘racially motivated’. Nor does it take anything away from the key issues at hand (police brutality).

If so, it's such a ridiculously obvious argument that it feels like there's zero sense to be talking about it unless it's a shoehorn for something else. Are we really making paragraph long posts and taking significant time out of our days to explain to people the insanely obvious fact that people judge things based on the information they have available to them, and that this information is always incomplete? I acknowledge and appreciate your efforts in cutting through polarised arguments by restating things clearly for people on both sides, but I think sometimes in this, you yourself miss the point.

True, but i can't think of a defence how the victim abuse you verbally would justify several of them kicking him to death for several minutes when he is now handcuffed, tazed and now on the floor.

I can't even imagine using that as a defence in court....say "he called my mum a whore! so I had to kick him in the head" ???
You can hear a couple of the officers claim he tried to grab their guns.

I wouldn’t at all be surprised to hear they get away with this.

Tragic RIP to the young man.

The cops over there are always very on edge as anyone can have a gun or knife just ready to stab or shoot you in a second but that is no excuse for going full on nut job over a possible arrest.

I understand the cops have it hard over there, at any moment you could be shot at so I yea you need to use your training in these situations, not go full crazy cause he may be a threat!!

I thought I read somewhere that he was *restrained* when they were beating him?

That your opinion and you’re more than entitled to it. I commented on a specific photo if that makes me what ever it is you think it makes me then I can accept that and continue to live my life. I’m not too bothered what some of the others think but I do hold you in higher regard as we share some common interests, specifically hip hop and boxing.

Like I said and I mean it genuinely if I upset you then I apologise but that only extends to you.
It wasn’t just his opinion, let’s be honest.

Just heard about this.
Crazy. I just don't understand it.

It obviously wasn't calculated, I mean they had body cams? How can the thought not go through thier heads that they are screwed?

So it's not even just the horrifying act it's the thought process that went into it? And if police are this stupid? Violent? Impulsive? How bad is the selection process?

I cannot imagine what the ramifications would be if they were all white.

Its an important distinction. There's a reason people use such emotive language.

But the point is FAR from the typical profile, if you want to make it even further away and reinforce my point further, we can say 16year old girl...as they can drive at 16 too.

You could. But why do you think of an 18 year old grown adult as a child?

Stop it. This thread isn't about you trying to be pedantic.

Correction, BEING pedantic. But yes, you are right. (woman, female, take your pick)

It's absolutely the thread. Language is very important when describing events such as this. Put the wrong spin on and it completely changes how people react. There is a massive difference between how police are required to treat adults and children for example.

I already said you are right, but you missed the essence of the point i was making. The point, and I am saying this for the 2nd time, is to be FAR away from the typical profile.

So by making the girl younger than i stated, it reinforces my point even further, making my argument stronger, not weaker.
