Tyre Nichols murder

I would hope that everyone would be on the same side here in calling this attack unacceptable (keeping the language clean, I feel much stronger about it) and I hope all those 5 cops involved get the harshest possibly prison sentences.

I think it sadly is just another example (as per our Met issues too) as to why its critical that the people who want to join the Police are heavily screened/researched/analysed before being placed in positions which give them "power" over people because the work of thousands of good cops can all instantly be undone by the evil actions of a few.

I already said you are right, but you missed the essence of the point i was making. The point, and I am saying this for the 2nd time, is to be FAR away from the typical profile.

So by making the girl younger than i stated, it reinforces my point even further, making my argument stronger, not weaker.
Dis86s point is not anything to do with engaging with your thought experiment, it's to highlight the use of emotive language as a tool to control discussion.

Tragic RIP to the young man.

The cops over there are always very on edge as anyone can have a gun or knife just ready to stab or shoot you in a second but that is no excuse for going full on nut job over a possible arrest.

This is kind of how I feel about it. People cannot fathom what it must be like to literally go looking for criminals and people who are likely to be carrying a weapon designed to kill you easily and quickly if you slip up for a second. They are in places where there is a huge amount of crime, poverty and death and are being asked not to make any mistakes. Its a horrible job and I have no idea how you wouldn't be prejudiced against the people in the community you work in when you see the destruction some of them cause.

That being said, this is something else entirely. The guy wasn't a threat. They have no excuse for this.

If I'm being completely honest I thought the video would be far worse than it was but I would be amazed if they aren't brought up on serious charges and don't get away with this. The protection around the police is slowly crumbling.

It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out over the next few years. I always felt that the police have far too much power over there but it was kind of an agreement that they aren't paid that well, they are in constant danger of being murdered but they also would be protected to the nth degree if they **** up.

How dumb are Americans? I mean yeah ok, silly question, but how many times do they need to see this stuff? They STILL don't lay on the ground when police tell them to.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not on the polices side (I'm the last one on here to defend the police), but when they say lay down, you damn well better lay down else you're gonna get killed.

He managed to get free at one point and started running. That sealed his fate there and then.

I'm surprised there aren't riots, but maybe they've simply accepted it now. Riots haven't worked in the past, so give up?

You're really surprised? There's a crucial element missing (or present, depending on your pov) that makes it far less simple to create hysteria around. It's not that riots work or don't, it's that the media haven't hyped it/people don't care about this as much, for some reason.

Maybe they've become used it now....which is why I'm surprised people don't lay on the damn ground when asked.

They might have got away with it more if they shot him at that point but they didn't. This is the issue. You cannot claim you feared for your life when he is pinned and cuffed. You can if he is running away and might have a weapon.

They haven't accepted it but they have done that. George Floyd wasn't half as bad as this but it was at the right time for things to kick off on a massive scale. The debate has moved on since then. Its very hard to say when the next BLM/MeToo etc will happen. Its not necessarily logical.

They certainly haven't given up but all of these issues take time to fix. How the police handle this will probably decide the fallout.

There aren’t riots because the police officers have been brought to justice. Something which often didn’t happen or only happened after a lot of attention.
Give over. The officers who were involved with George Floyd were fired the next day, and Derek Chauvin was charged with murder 3 days later.

Not excusing the officers actions but the guy didn't do himself any favours not complying with instructions.

Doesn't really matter does it though, even if someone runs off and is caught, should he of been battered to death?
Just because he ran off doesn't give the cops an excuse to use extreme force to that extent.

He could have run off for any sort of reason, scared, knows he has commited a petty crime or worse, the arrest was not performed in a professional way

I dont recall anyone bringing up the start of the video, he is being pulled over for a driving infraction (according to reports ive seen), yet there is 3 officers all with weapons drawn, for what should be a minor traffic stop.
Regardless of america and their gun problem, this is clearly that department and group of humans thinking they are above every and anyone in the area and have all the rights to treat people in any way shape or manner.
In first interaction, one officer is forcing an arm round his back and screaming at him to lay flat, whilst another officer is pressuring his other wrist in a way that would never allow the guy to move, let alone lay flat.
All officers in these videos, regardless of physical violence or not, do not deserve to be serving. The white guy in the first video openly said "hope he gets stomped", that is not appropriate or acceptable for any serving police officer.

The officer thought they are above the law, the issue I have is that 5 black officers are being prosecuted and the other officers involved in the initial stop appear to have gotten away with it and can continue operating like the thugs they are. (not trying to reignite the thug argument pages back, just telling it how it is)

Could not agree more, the stop was beyond reasonable force then the way they have acted and assaulted him once catching up to him is beyond anything I can fathom.
See people saying this is not as bad as Rodney Kings, I'd disagree completely this shows that racism is not the cause of these problems and concerns, its clearly a police policy and police culture to be so heavy handed and violent against certain groups of individuals.

How about I smack you round the head with 4 friends, concuss you and then give you orders to do something, I guarantee you would not be doing them as you'll be concussed and confused.
The fact no officer seems to understand how a concussion works is horrific.

They did act like thugs, but if you remove the height chart there’s nothing about their appearance to suggest they are thugs. It’s just five black men.

Really? Come ooooon. Not even the third guy? Thuggy McThugface? Looks like a right wrong 'un.

I don't like how British news media keep using the same racially charged style as American news media.

The whole police narrative is that they are racist. But all these cops are black. So it's not really relevant for our media to use "A black man was beaten..".

I think they are saying it that way so any black person who doesn't know the details of the incident are going to assume the cops were white.

disagree.
I feel the point being made that although the officers are black, there is clear police policy or culture in play that they are additional aggressive or violent with certain individuals backgrounds. I've never seen 3 police pull someone over with guns drawn for a driving infraction before. Only if the stop has gone badly and escalated.
