UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [21st - 23rd February 2023]

He should try a little defending.

As to what Rio is saying, I don't agree at all. This RM side is Kroos, Modric, Benzema. Those are the guys that dig them out of problems time after time. When they retire RM are going to have big problems replacing them.
Benzema maybe but Valverde's already an incredible player and Camavinga and Tchouameni are both exceptional talents.

None of those three are even close to what Modric and Kroos offer them though. Haven't seen a huge amount of Tchouameni and Camavinga but when I have seen them they look decent, nothing special though. Lots of energy and bustle but not that absolute quality they will be losing soon.

They don't make players like Modric and Kroos anymore. I can't think of a single EPL midfielder that comes close to the ability of Modric. Bernardo Silva? David Silva? who now plays wingback! Scholes was similar but that was ten years ago. Great players always look like they have time even when they are pressed. They know how to pace the game and can exert control when required or when to accelerate the play. We see a bit of that from Casemiro but I genuinely can't think of anyone else who is similar.

De Bruyne is one of those who just picks passes and makes them look easy. Knows when to break through a press and when to pass or turn back.

Tchouameni comes as a replacement for Casemiro, Camavinga is an all-rounder player in the midfield, not a Modric, not a Kross, but something different, not better, not worse.

I think the question you have to ask is were Modric and Kroos like Modric and Kroos when they were the age of Camavinga, Tchouameni etc?

I considered him but I don't think he's an all round midfielder like Modric. One who exerts control on the game. He's a great athlete and can spot a pass but I don't see the subtlety in his play that you get from the players we've seen tonight. How many De Bruyne masterclasses have we seen this season? In fairness he plays more advanced and maybe in his 30's he'll drop back into a deeper role.

Modric was considered too lightweight initially at Spurs and at 5'8" he'd not get a look in in the EPL now. At 37 to be doing what he's doing is astounding.

Why is it that Reals veterans at 35 are still top draw, and the likes of Hendo,Fab,Bobby,Salah & arguably VVD have just fallen off a cliff form wise. The beatings are becoming tiresome.
Hendo was always a limited footballer, great captain but limited so the drop off is far more noticeable. Fabinho is the one that's unexplainable. Salah was bound to have a drop in form eventually, he's been exceptional for 5 years, Bobby was always a niche footballer so to speak, just picks up injury niggles galore these days. The injury to Virgil has clearly taken something out of him.

I was only able to watch bits and pieces of the match tonight so can't comment too much but I'm not sure how we didn't get a pen at 2-3 for the push on Nunez. For Real to go straight down the other end and make it 2-4 was a double kick in the teeth. From there we've got to take chances and even at our best Real are incredibly dangerous on the break so sadly it was no surprise that they got the 5th.

It's not a form issue, they've just played a hell of a lot of games under Klopp, playing a style of football that naturally takes more out of the body and they've picked up more injuries as a result. They're simply no longer capable of playing the way Klopp wants them to but they're still being asked to.

The only two options we have are a change in style or a change in personal. One requires Klopp to rip up his entire ethos and start again and the other requires FSG to fund the replacement of 5/6 first team players.

How can you watch Camavinga and come to the conclusion he is nothing special ?

I said it here on the thread the same. It was a clear penalty and they go straight down the other end and not kill the tie but as good as. We get the penalty, make it 3-3 and its a different game completely.

Poor officials.
