UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [28th - 30th November 2023]

European refs are consistent at least, I said that was a pen the second it happened in realtime. Arms anywhere but pinned to your back in the box, you'll give a pen if it hits you.

Nonsense, but consistent nonsense.

So about half your own fan base then?
wheres NUFC players smashing a bar up?

what teams had trouble in Newcastle ? dortmund fans loved it here

Well that's absolutely guttering. When the 8 minute came up, you just knew PSG were going to get some help in injury. What on earth is he supposed to do with his arm in that instance.

Ref not even consistent over the course of a game, defenders should amputate them or something....

I thought there was a rule it can't be hand ball if it bounces off you onto your hand?

Just have to hope Dortmund keep their unbeaten record at home in the champions league even though they have nothing to play for !!

I have faith!

And if we go out we just smash all the teams from now on get back in and win it next season!!!

Didn’t say they did? Although you’re forgetting about that time you smashed your own gaff up and someone punched a horse.

I’m sure the ref is worried about some PSG ultras though

It's probably worth noting that even UEFA's own football board last season recommended that handballs weren't awarded following deflections from a players own body but UEFA chose to ignore them.

Yea, we get the exact same comments almost every round of European fixtures. There's been handballs for and against Utd and one against Liverpool in recent weeks that, just like todays, never get given in the PL but will be given in UEFA comps. They have an ultra strict interpretation of handball.

Ok, I'm not sure we need you to list reasons why you don't like Newcastle.

Wrong.

If it hits another part of your body before hitting your arm it is not a penalty, even in Europe. That is the simple rule. The fact that the EXACT same thing happened earlier in the game when VAR looked at it and correctly ruled it wasn't a penalty only serves to makes this decision worse.

This is completely wrong. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, UEFA's football advisory board recommended that UEFA change its interpretation of the handball law so that a deflection from a players own body cannot result in a handball but UEFA chose not to implement it. Handballs always have and continue to be given in UEFA competitions in the event of a deflection - the only question mark is the position of the defenders arm and UEFA are incredibly strict on this. If your arm is even marginally away from your body then a handball is likely to be given.

Bit of perspective lads, A couple of years ago Sheffield United were turning us over after not winning a game in 6 months, Tonight PSG are going home ******* themselves silly that they got a last minute draw from a poor penalty decision.

Even if l give you that. (It is still just ludicrous and will need to change)

Though, the rule stipulates the arm should be in an "unnatural position". Livramento is running, his arm is in a running position and his arm is bent in a running position. It's a shocking decision whichever rule you apply.

That's how I see it.

The defender would struggle to keep up if the arms had to be by the side.

Would look pretty funny mind...

And what is an unnatural position is open to interpretation and is different in every League and competition. UEFA have had a very strict view on what an unnatural position is for years now and there's been a lot of pressure on domestic League's to follow suit. I'm sure everybody remembers the start of the 20/21 season when the PL adopted UEFA's interpretation of handball and we were getting penalties every game. The PL ditched it after a few months but it's still in force in UEFA competitions, whether we like it or not.

And to be clear before anybody replies to this thinking otherwise, this isn't me saying I think it's the right away for handball to be interpreted, I'm just pointing out that this is the way it is interpreted in Europe.
