UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [28th - 30th November 2023]

And to be clear before anybody replies to this thinking otherwise, this isn't me saying I think it's the right away for handball to be interpreted, I'm just pointing out that this is the way it is interpreted in Europe.
Yes, I understand your devil's advocacy but what demonstrates how idiotic UEFA's (IFAB's) rule is on this was shown earlier in this game where it came of the Newcastle player's knee and hit his arm which was even farther away from his body and objectively in a more "unnatural" position but when VAR looked at it nothing was made of it.

Did the people messing around with these rules ever play football or are they just MBA graduates?

@Ayahuasca laugh all you want but games are won by goals not XG.....
I do like to see what the XG stats are especially when just watching the highlights, as you can get a better idea of who created the most chances and should probably have won but you are correct, and I agree with you totally. The ball crossing the line is the only factor that really matters.

check the slow mo of the ball from the angles the ref didn't get shown by var
0:12

the ball barely touches his elbow at all, it hardly changes the direction of the ball even.

If anything the deflection looks more like an advantage to PSG than anything else... if #7 instead of crying hand ball actually made the run he could have had a good chance to score

Some you get, some you don't. Pointless moaning about it, nowt is going to change it. Harsh pen but by the same token had he given it first then reviewed it, I doubt he would have changed his mind. Feels like a loss but it's still a great result and looks like no new injuries given that he made zero substitutions. Onwards, great chance to overtake Man Utd in the league in a couple of days time :cool:

when a ref can't be consistent over a match I guess we can't expect var to either.

without all the mobbing off him for penalties I honestly think he wouldn't have gave it, how many times was that 3-4? NUFC should start doing the same every game it clearly works to wear a ref down over time and make him feel like he's making the wrong calls
seems VAR changed his mind when they froze the image of the ball on the elbow.

it was like that frame made anything that happened before it irrelevant and VAR were showing him the error he made in not giving a pen.

may as well get rid of refs and just have VAR calling the shots, that might seem consistent and not like it's there to chance a refs mind

I thought the ref was pretty good tbh. VAR did change his mind, not the PSG players - he actually booked one of them for crowding him which was good to see. VAR is there to overturn clear and obvious errors. It did it's job, he didn't think there was enough initially but after review he did. Just like VAR did exactly what it was designed for in the Arsenal game. It's **** for us more so as it likely wouldn't be given in the Prem but it is what it is. Every single player gave his all and it's an excellent point away from home for a club like ours and keeps us right in the mix. Avoiding defeat at home to Milan drops us into the Europa and I'd fancy us to match any team in that over two legs.

Exactly. Even going by the current rules/considerations by which a ref can give handball:
  • Whether it is a "deliberate action" by the player - ie have they moved their arm towards the ball?;
  • The proximity of the player from the ball and the speed it hits them on the arm/hand;
  • If the the hand or arm is in "an unnatural position", - ie away from the body

The only criteria that the ref could have given it on is the last one. If you watch the video above it is clear and obvious that his arm was not in an unnatural position as he was running and his arm was in the normal, natural position when anybody runs. It hit his bent elbow as his am was going backwards from a running motion! The rule has been corrupted by people only stating that the arm is away from the body when this is not the complete rule; it has to primarily be in an unnatural position, i.e. away from the body (in an outstretched manner)

It is also ludicrous that we are in a situation that the Uefa football board recommended the common sense ruling that:
"...no handball offence should be called on a player if the ball is previously deflected from their own body,"
and you have the Premier League implementing it but UEFA not doing so for their competitions. There are too many mugs running this game.

Lascelles had uuuuuuumbaapppiii in his back pocket again. Couldn’t score past him (again) in open play so had to ring his mates down at UEFA and pay for a penalty!!!

I hope Dortmund watched his interview afterwards.

Miley had a reasonable game and the fact he is doing at 17, regardless of the injury circumstances is great and a lot has been made of it but Livramento has only been 21 for a week and thought he was our best player tonight and looked very good every time he has played.
In his unnatural position. He’s a right back. Also heard he’s very handy at CB also.

It's not like Sky Sports to not know what they're talking about. UEFA's football advisory board recommended that last season, not following the game and UEFA chose to ignore their recommendation.

The meltdoons on Talksport last night and the ones still going on on social media is quite something considering the grief you've been giving Arsenal fans the last few weeks.

It's kerruption and because PSG are owned by a country with Nasser Al-Khelaifi on the UEFA board. Some poor fella had to turn his christmas lights off after the game apparently as he just wasn't in the mood!

There have definitely been some overreactions. I thought the Toon fans on here were pretty sanguine about it.

It's disappointing, yes, but I still think we can take a lot of positives out of the game.
