UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [28th - 30th November 2023]

There have definitely been some overreactions. I thought the Toon fans on here were pretty sanguine about it.

It's disappointing, yes, but I still think we can take a lot of positives out of the game.

I didn't watch the game but it seemed to me that the Toon were pretty much bombarded by PSG whilst watching the highlights so a draw was inevitable.

Did Newcastle hold up once they went 1-0 up instead of going for the second goal?

Pretty much, especially in the second half, it was like Attack vs Defence.

so a draw was inevitable.

Not really, they couldn't score in 95 minutes of open play — there was nothing inevitable about it. :p

More or less. There were a few half chances after the goal but like I said, most of the second half was AvD. It got to the point where we were just hoofing it up-field into empty space whenever we got possession and then they just came straight back at us.

The thing is, the players were clearly knackered and there were no options on the bench, they didn't have much choice.

They were bombarded insofar as PSG having all the possession but most of it wasn't really dangerous. Honestly PSG made Newcastle look rather rough and ready but as usual, Newcastle players gave 100% and generally nullified PSG in the important areas.

PSG had quite a few good chances but fluffed them. xG for PSG outside of the penalty was basically 4 and they scored 0.

A more experienced Champions League team, would have taken PSG apart last night.

Not sure honestly. PSG played pretty well. Nothing special but you could see that their technical level was just a level above Newcastles. That game could have ended as a bit of a battering if PSG put away some of their chances.

Its very hard to speculate on "what ifs" in CL football and PSG are a funny side.

These two points kind of contradict each other. An xg of 4 is really high, in fact you can have games where a side scores 5+ and they rarely have an xg that high.

The way I saw the game was that PSG were fairly rubbish for the first 60 mins or so, without being able to sustain attacks and looking vulnerable on the rare occasions Newcastle got forward however in the last 30 they pinned Newcastle back and they opened them up a lot but their finishing (+ a couple of decent saves) was terrible.

According to the BBC, Uefa has stood down the VAR official who made the decision to guide the referee to give PSG their penalty last night.

It wasn't Michael Oliver by any chance?

Not defending the refs but each league all across Europe will have their own way of doing things which is why some things are given in Europe but not in the UK. This is where the confusion starts.

Imo refs should be a European entity as an organisation and rotated through the league's all over Europe. It would reduce bias and have everyone on the same level.

Your posts always bring a smile to my face Adam. I'm gutted that I'll be out and won't be able to watch the Newcastle - Manchester utd game on Saturday but I'll be sure to check the thread for yours and Bigpig's posts when I get home.
fixed your post. Newcastle utd was United long before Newton health changed their name.

I did realise that as I wrote it but I couldn't be bothered to explain any better :p

Basically Newcastle played pretty well and countered PSG for lots of the game but PSG still had plenty of very short spells where they created chances and should have scored.

Newcastle scored 4 in the first game vs PSG from an xG of just over 1. 1.05 to be exact.

sWhy are people so bothered about XG? if anything it tells the story of how good a defence and goal keeper were... it doesnt say the other team should have won anyway

newcastle used 0 subs they scored and then parked the bus, PSG cried for penalties multiple times.

probably coached to kick the ball toweards defenders arms and scream pen with how quick they went into a choreographed scream running towwards the ref.
every team in CL should just start doing the same, it;'s like the old diving thing every team did...

It's a disgusting penalty leaving a sour taste because PSG were rubbish and didn't deserve anything from the game, mbappe looked like he was about to cry all game..... invisible like last time

How does it show how good the defence is?

I don't think you understand xG if you think it means the defence was good.
xG is calculated using a serious deep dive into the past. To measure the likelihood of shots being converted into actual goals, xG uses historical information from thousands of shots with similar characteristics to estimate how likely a goal is on a scale between 0 and 1.

high likely hood of a goal based on previous match data, but it isn't.... because someone blocks, it a goal keeper saves it etc....
