UEFA Champions League/Europa League 2010/11 Matchday 3 *** Spoilers ***

Just seen the United highlights on ITV, didn't look like you played that badly? Obviously highlights can be edited to show a lot but it looks like you owned the match without stretching for it? Superb goal from Nani.

Just seen the highlights, how many were at Utd's game tonight? More atmosphere at my local team at St James Park......... Exeter City, with 4,000 against Yeovil.

Oh yeah we owned the match, I think we reached well into triple figures in the sideways passes. I can remember 3 shots the entire match, the goal, another Nani one straight at the keeper and the Hernandez chance that he looked offside for anyway.

Bale was just as good last season and we tied him down with a new contract. I think it's fair to say he's happy where he is.

Add to that the fact that unlike most, we don't have a complete numpty running our club. Instead, we have one who can see a player's importance to the team. Levy knows how important it is to keep our best players now more than ever.

Yea, you have a track record of holding off attempts from bigger sides to sign your best players ;)

The only thing a new contract guarantees is you'll get a big fee for him if he were to leave.

At home, Man Utd yet again fail to deliver a convincing win (against an average side as well)

Maybe a young /inexperienced side - but even so highly disappointing

really sad to see

Of course, but our last two big players to leave were Berbatov and Keane. Hasn't exactly worked out brilliantly for either of them. Berbatov seems to be finally showing his ability now though. But, we have a genuine chance of staking a claim to 4th spot for a while if we hold onto our players and use the money from the CL to strengthen the squad and our hold. Bale is still young, if anything, there's plenty of time for his price to rise further.

I wasn't saying Bale would leave, it was a tongue in cheek response to what you said about how Levy wouldn't sell your best players.

Whether Spurs can hold onto their top players in the long term will rest on whether they can cement there place as 1 of 5-6 sides that will genuinely challenging for the CL spots consistently.

People overstating Bale just slightly maybe? Did he bang in a few in the champs league qualifiers? Remember Crouch, and Gerrard have had silly scoring records due to a few extra qualification games against truly awful teams(I don't know if bale did or didn't.

Bale so far has played every second of 8 games, he's scored in a single game so far, with 2 goals, against Stoke, and has a single assist in another game. Thats hardly setting the world alight.

He had 3 goals and 5 assists in a little over half a season last year.

Talking about him being top notch for 18 months, slightly exagerating, he played just over 1700 minutes last season, 19 games give or take, he was pretty much crap for two years before that. So far last season and this season together you've got not far off 30 games, which is maybe average for your top club winger, and in those games he has 5 goals, 6 assists. I'm not a fan of Malouda, he's a lucky pratt and in difficult games is non existant, but he's got 6 goals this season in over a game less played, though he's banged them in against Brom, Stoke, Blackpool and Wigan.

Last year in 2300 minutes, so what 35% more games, he got 12 goals, 9 assists.

3 goals, 5 assists, increase both by 35%, he wasn't a patch on Malouda to be honest.

He seems to do very well at being very effective in every heavily televised game.

Lets also not forget Inter gave up playing football after 15 mins, they were barely ambling forward, half trying, really not bothering though. Second half Maicon was moved up the wing, they brought a couple oldies on who also weren't trying. He did great, it was 3 great shots, questionable from the keeper as all three shots were as close to identical as you can get.

But one of the best wingers in the world, 5 goals in 2500 or so minutes, not many assists either, its weak. For all Bales domination, Spurs aren't dominating, I seem to remember Johnson being thought of as truly fantastic early last season when he popped up with 2 goals in one game IIRC, people have a tendancy to overhype a couple performances and forget that he certainly doesn't score in every game, or much at all.

Edit;- this season, Nani has in again less games, 3 goals, 7 assists. Kalou hasn't played 3 games worth of minutes, has 4 goals 1 assist, Walcott, in again less than 3 games has 4 goals, 1 assist, Nasri has 3 goals in half the game time, Arshavin's barely woken up since the start of LAST season, he has 2 goals 3 assists, Albrighton has 1 goal 3 assists, Downing 3 goals, Milner 1 goal 3 assists, N'zogbia has 2 goals, 1 assist, half the playing time.

Infact I think everyone listed has played either a bit of massively less than Bale. Surely if he was "that" good, he'd be, you know, scoring, and assisting more?

Etherington and Brunt have both popped up with 5 assists already, Brunt also with a goal to his name.

Do you actually watch football games or do you just have a massive Excel spreadsheet updating with live stats and watch the game 'Matrix-style'? :p

.. snip...

yes but Bale is more exciting to watch :p

hahaha

Spurs just need that first 15 to keep their nerve and concentrate which they failed to do. Hugely disappointing despite pulling back a near miracle.

Harry really needs to decide what he wants to do with King.. His absence in and out of the defence must be unsettling which in turn brings inconsistency. That showed last night. Gallas (who i thought would be a lot better) and Bassong looked out of position and clueless.

..and why were we allowing our full backs to attack against a team like inter when we already had Lennon/Bale on the wings?

Assists and goals are not everything. if you actually watched the games, instead of just pulling stats of your favourite website you would realize the influence he has on the game.

He is not sporadic in his form, like some attacking players he is good pretty much every game.

Name a better winger at the moment. Nani? Malouda? :D Walcott? :o

He didn't score in the qualifiers, but he did get 4 assists.

If you say so. But that is partly due to Spurs starting off the season a bit slowly and having to deal without a settled defence.

He had 3 goals and 5 assists in a little over half a season last year.

You're right, he hasn't been on fire for 18 months, he's been on fire since Assou-Ekotto left for the ACoN and Bale was brought in to replace him i.e. ~10 months.

Last year in 2300 minutes, so what 35% more games, he got 12 goals, 9 assists.

To compare him with Malouda isn't exactly fair, Chelsea are probably the strongest team in the Premiership so it's expected he'd get more goals and assists. He also plays in a more forward role, forgetting that Bale is naturally a left back and still gets played there, Malouda is part of Chelsea's attacking trio in a 4-3-3.

Yeah they just sat down and started playing with their phones...

Bale isn't really a winger, he's a left back, left wing back or left midfielder. Spurs aren't dominating, but they are still on level points with Arsenal and Man Utd, so who's complaining, I can't wait till we start dominating.

Best get back to your spreadsheets, pretty much any team in the world would happily have Bale roaming down their left flank.
