UEFA Champions League/Europa League 2010/11 Matchday 4 *** Spoilers ***

I'm not convinced he did make them look like that when Rafael kept him very quiet at the weekend apart from the one run that I can remember diagonally across the pitch.

EDIT: Note, not saying he isn't a good player - just that it seems from that clip he's just got the pace over them rather than technical skill.

Since winning a shed load of trophies.

According to his wiki he has won 5 trophies of note, 2 UEFA, 1 Champions league, FA cup, and a La ligue, the rest are charity shield and poxy league titles, would most consider that a shed load, worthy of the word great? Me thinks not.

When he was at Liverpool what did he achieve other than the champions league? Finishing fourth on numerous occasions when there was no competition other than Everton :p, and pushing Utd to the title 08/09. Other than that. For a supposedly massive club that is not much to write home about.

just from that clip, yes he bet them with pace. but all the way through the game he showed class taking people on with skill.

4 great goals in the game, best one has to be eto'os goal, what a striker

Don't see why people keep picking on his pace. He didn't do anything differently in the two games against Inter than Ronaldo did for years at United.

This is irrelevant to any arguement.

So because he didn't rainbow flick the ball over a defender to get past them or go for the 50 stepovers like a Ronaldo-wannabe, it's not as good?

Getting past any defender, let alone what is thought of as one of the best defensive sides in Europe, and then delivering dangerous ball after dangerous ball into the box is skill, regardless of whether he got there by knocking the ball around him, or by phasing in and out of dimensions.

But of course, as it's a Spurs fan saying this, it'll be instantly disregarded as someone just bigging up their own player.

Have to make sure thats seen twice 100% agree

Amazing game.

Having a player like Bale is win. Hansen made a good point in that if you double mark him (like Everton) you open up more space for everyone else!

Surely you just answered your own question

Best defence in Europe ,normally get there tactics right

oh right so you compared an individual player against a defensive system. As long as you're not making any leaps in logic that's ok then.

So as Bale has had two exceptional games interspersed with some average ones against inferior defenses then that makes him inconsistent I assume?

Funny to think how those two games spoke volumes about where both English teams are in the world. Tottenham played great football at times, and had the European champions almost completely out of the game in the second half, yet still weren't certain of the victory until the third goal. Meanwhile United bored the pants off their game for most of the 90 minutes, yet never really looked like not winning.

I have to say though, and it pains me to do so, but well done Spurs. You tormented Inter at times, and not just Bale. Modric, VdV and Crouch all played their part.

I can't believe a so called great manager, even though I have zero respect for Benitez, failed to make a single tactical decision in any way to deal with Bale, its laughable.
Agree with this mind. Can't believe Benitez didn't at any point get a giant sign for Maicon that said "STOP LETTING HIM GO OUTSIDE OF YOU"

Bale really didn't do anything special, he doesn't step over, he doesn't fool the players, he does the same thing pretty much every time and not a one of them read it.
Disagree with this though. He had some neat touches at times that were more than just hoof it and run, but he clearly realised that was all he needed to get round Inter, so why bother?

Also both his assists were inch-perfect crosses, so I don't know anyone can say he's all pace.

Yep. Rafael is better than one of the best defences in Europe.

i remember him putting Ribery in his back pocket until he got sent off last season. Rafael is very quick which is why bale couldnt just run past him like he did to inters team.

at the world cup though Maicon was like the uber goal scoring right back running the game for brazil in some matches. his strength is definitely in his attacking wingback play, but fair play to bale for making him look almost incompetant in his position when pushed back.

I think what is being missed here is that tottenham are not a one man Bale team, so you won't see him play exceptionally every game.
Spurs are a great team who are still improving, if Bale doesn't delivery, we have other top class players, VDV, Modric(my favourite) Lennon, Huddleston, then there are the attacking full backs, we don't just rely on Bale.

I really think we have the best squad in the league, it's just a shame the players don't yet believe that

You're right, let's see if Bale does delivery in future.

Apart from conceding the fewest goals in Serie A you mean? Less than Mourinho did at the same point last season and less than they have done for 20 odd years.

Still not top though are they? In a league that they have dominated for years.

That's 8 goals conceded in 4 CL games isn't it? Hardly impressive, especially considering he's taken over the defending champions and has a group with several clubs with little to no CL experience.
