UEFA Champions League/Europa League 5/6/7/March *** Spoilers ***

Do you have a source for this. As far as I knew the ref must make his decision and then it can be reviewed by VAR and then the ref can say he wants to take a look himself. Either way, excluding matter of fact calls (offsides, ball going out of play) it must be a clear mistake for the decision to be overturned.

I've heard it before, but I don't have much time to search. This page seems to start by agreeing with you:
https://football-technology.fifa.com/en/media-tiles/video-assistant-referee-var/

But then it goes on to say:
Incident occurs
The referee informs the VAR, or the VAR recommends to the referee that a decision/incident should be reviewed.

That's my bolding to pull out what seemed to happen here. They can't have been reviewing a decision, because a decision hadn't been made, he had given no indication of a corner or a penalty when he went to view the screens.

It absolutely will matter. When he came in there was no expectation to win anything or get top 4. Things were a shambles.

He has done a fantastic job, this can't be denied. Overturning a deficit like this with half of the first team squad injured is mightily impressive. First time it's ever happened in European Cup history I think BT Sport said.

Last night Ajax made history being the first team to lose the first leg at home 2-1 and win the leg.
Tonight United did it one better by turning a 2-0 deficit around.

Maybe but from where we were we could never have imagined this turnaround. We were something like 11 points off top 4, absolutely dire and half our best players wanted to leave.

We aren’t good enough to win the league and we won’t win the CL. Unless we fall off a cliff before the end of the season he has to be top choice currently.

God Michael Owen is a little scrote. Didn’t even celebrate when we scored the winner.

To be fair he is Liverpool through and through, even though he had a spell at united late in his career, so not really surprised he didn’t celebrate.

Love to see shirt tuggers getting penalized.

Would love to see VAR giving a foul for it every time.

OK, I was quite interested, so did a tiny bit more searching, and I think I've found the relevant rules - but they could certainly be written more clearly. From here:

Again, I have bolded the bits which seem to describe this situation where a decision hasn't been made before the VAR.

In all these situations, the VAR is only used after the referee has made a decision (including allowing play to continue), or if a serious incident is ‘missed’ i.e. not seen by the match officials. Principles There are twelve principles which are the foundation of the VAR experiment: 1. Video technology will only be used to correct clear errors and for missed serious incidents in defined match-changing decisions: goal, penalty/no penalty, direct red card and mistaken identity (e.g. the referee cautions/sends off the wrong player).

So basically the ref knows it might have hit his hand, but didn't see well enough to judge, so called for a VAR review himself.

Exactly how I worded it too .
Its in the law book but impossible to not jump like that

It's incredibly easy to jump without your arm out. I'm so fed up with Rio going "but it's natural"... so what, you train every single day to do things that aren't natural. There is no human instinct to slide tackle, or kick a football, they are trained. It's exceptionally easy to train yourself to jump with your arms in, you do that even for a couple days making sure you do it and it becomes natural. Ramos is someone who very obviously trained himself to do it because for years 99% of the time he jumps or goes in to block a shot you seem him cross his arms behind his back.

It's not remotely close to impossible to not jump like that, it's so painfully easy it's embarrassing for that to be used as an excuse. More over he raised his arm and extended it before he jumped.

Poor Castles is getting desperate :D

Really don't think that's the case. You could argue that nearly every decision the ref doesn't see well enough to give a certain decision. I think what you've quoted simply does refer to incidents that have been completely missed by the officials. The corner had been given by all accounts and with the use of VAR the decision has been overturned.

The holy trio celebrating :)

Fair play to United and in particular Rashford for having the balls to put the penalty away in those circumstances.

Ramos the elbow king jumps with his arms by his side? Heard it all now.

Watch him once or twice, he's the most obvious one and also I'm talking about defending and blocking shots. He's a giant POS who elbows his way through corners and other situations, but that isn't blocking shots or throwing himself in the way of shots. Watch him some time, same for defending crosses, he makes a huge and obvious move to do it more than any other player I've ever seen.

Elbowing people at corners is not the same situation in the slightest.

100% a penalty, he turned around, put his arm out which blocked the shot. Easy decision for the ref.

So happy the old Man Utd are back. After Fergie I thought it would never be the same again. Finally enjoying watching them play again until the very last minute.
