UEFA Champions League/Europa League 6/7/8 March *** Spoilers ***

Sooo....Bilbao, better than Stoke?

Don't know what's more impressive about them, the fact the majority of their players came from their youth system or the fact they're all Basque. They've **** all over the home grown rule tbh.

Got to love the bilbao fans too. How many other sets of supporters would have asked for foriegn players to be signed after a few lean years? The away leg is going to be a pressure cooker. San Mames is so similar to the old english grounds that its going to feel like theres 100,000 fans.

not really, they've been pap for 2 yrs now. a sign of how pap the pl is in terms of quality.

It's pretty plain to see that the prem has taken an arrow to the knee ;)

A few years ago we were seeing an all-prem CL final. Now the two teams at the top of the table are knocked out in the group stage... and both managing to lose in the europa league for good measure!

Tonight (and yesterday when Barca played) you saw some *real* football from two good Spanish sides. It reminded me what real football looks like.

We're too used to the average standard in the prem and perhaps forgot what the game should look like.

Passing to feet! Not giving the ball away! Goals actually scored with finesse instead of point blank headers and penalties?! What madness is this?

How many teams in the prem can break a team down with a succession of quick, accurate, one-touch passes? *Honestly*?

It was a pathetic performance from us but they also played well and didn't let us into the game. It wasn't a huge surprise given our home form and the team put out midfield wise.

A rather mad last ten minutes for sure.

It's going to be a really tough away game and I'll not be posting in a euro thread until then as things are about to get messy I reckon :p

EDIT: Also, De Gea was great today despite the goals.

Personally thought defence and the midfield were wrong (I dont think Evans has ever played well when not partnered by Vidic or Rio) , and that midfeld was really questionable......(Young starting on the right to favour Park, wihtout even mentioning Giggs and Jones)

Still think that free kick near the end is wrong - surely (given that Utd were totally in control of the ball and they were backing off), they should have taken the free kick and give back possession by GIFTING it to the opposition gk (like when someone is injured in play)

There was also a clear penalty (with the defender's arms around Chicharito when the ball was just out of reach of his foot) which the ref - like a lot of other things - totally ignored.

They played well, even brilliantly at times and definitely deserved a draw, (allowing for some fantastic keeping by De Gea) but even despite how dire Utd were , they deserved a draw

SAF gets his selections better away from home, and performances are generally better too - but it should be one hell of a game (and to be honest the worse we do, the more likely SAF is to get some decent recruits in the summer) so I dont really care that much about the result (should hopefully make the team stronger for the EPL title fight)

Noisy gits, had far too much to sing about

Noticed this when I went against Benfica, they had about 2-3k fans all together so they generated so much noise and sung all match compared to the pathetic Man Utd crowd, heard a few chants but other than that it was like being in a Manchester library.

I don't think we deserved anything. The entire performance was a shambles.

As I said earlier, it's been like that for the past few weeks and it hasn't improved.

Yep awful we conceded 3 at home vs basel too. Awful.

Does anyone remember the fortress of old trafford in Europe? We had never lost s home game till i think the later 90's when we dropped a game.

This season alone we have lost 2 home games consecutively to flipping europa cup standard teams.

There was a lot of talk pre season. Would utd signing young etc get them closer to barca ?! well without having to suffer the humiliation of playing them ourselves.

The answer is now clear that we are further away from barca than we were - and we were 3-1 down last time and it could easily have been more.

Disagree. I don't know what has happened to English football over the last 12 months but previously lass any of the top 4 from england would be looking at bilbao as an as a really good tie and would be expecting to win.

12 months? English football has been on the decline since 2008.
Atl B. would be top 4 in our league based on the stuff they have played this season.

Its not like Utd got a disputed penalty or anything

Actually I thought the hand ball was outside the area and should have been a free kick. But then after the linesmen missed a blatant offside for their second goal and the ref gave them a free kick for nothing and told our players Bilbao would play the ball back to us in the build up to their third I'm certainly not going to say we didn't deserve at least one dodgy decision go in our favour :p

EDIT:

Shouldn't laugh at the great man but still pretty funny :D
