UEFA Euro 2016 - Round of 16 **spoilers** (25th - 27th June)

I'm not saying Smalling didn't have a good season or isn't a good player but once upon a time we had Campbell, Terry, Ferdinand, Carragher, Woodgate, King etc. He wouldn't have got near the squad in their era.

This is the poorest group of players England have had in a long time.

Meh, I think there is a lot of nostalgia here. It's always easy to look back and say what we had was better.

You know the way they keep rolling out Paul McCartney at things like the Olympics?

That'll be Rooney in 2018 and 2020.

He appears to be un-droppable.
It's a pity because Rooney got the captaincy when people were questioning him even being in the team. So now yeah, he seems un-droppable but hopefully whoever comes in will appoint a new captain.

Exactly. I've been following England for longer than most of the people on this forum have probably been in existence, and yeh, surprised at the outcome tonight I'm not.

Neither are the promoters or the advetisers. Who here has seen more than a few cars with flags or Mars bars with england flags on. I haven't cause no one gives a flying **** anymore.
It's almost a running joke when we do score, like how the F did that happen.

By far the worst england team I have ever seen, and I was saying this before the tournament started.

Just watched the highlights - I really hope Iceland play like that against France - better team most definitely won...

ps3ud0

What annoys me is that had we won today we would probably have played well against France. Today just seemed like a total non event. The players didn't turn up all game.

It's easy because it's true. The difference in individual quality of players we have now compared to 10-15 years ago is night and day.

Cahil and Smalling are decent CB's but we had an incredible group of CB's back then. Walker and Rose, if you're clutching at straws, might have made the squad as cover but they're never getting into the side ahead of Neville or Cole.

Midfield is the biggest difference for me though. We've gone from having some of the best midfielders in the world to nothing. We have one natural central midfielder in Wilshere and even a fully fit Wilshere isn't nearly as good as Lampard, Gerrard or Scholes and would have struggled to make the squad in their era. The fact that we've taken Wilshere despite not kicking a ball for a season highlights how bad the rest are. Dier should never be making an England squad as a midifielder - maybe as a utility player - but to be starting as our first choice CM is an embarrassment.
