UEFA Euro 2016 - Round of 16 **spoilers** (25th - 27th June)

There are 1-2 lame ducks but mostly the blame doesn't lie with the players IMO even if only a few really looked like they deserved to play at that level.

Think your probably alone with that opinion. When Vardy came on he made a tackle in their half by the corner flag about the 88th minute. It was the first piece of effort from someone that looked like they wanted to win I had seen all game, followed by Rashford taking it round two players which happened to be the best foot work I'd seen all game. That was in the 90th minute. The players were totally to blame.

It's easy because it's true. The difference in individual quality of players we have now compared to 10-15 years ago is night and day.

Cahil and Smalling are decent CB's but we had an incredible group of CB's back then. Walker and Rose, if you're clutching at straws, might have made the squad as cover but they're never getting into the side ahead of Neville or Cole.

Midfield is the biggest difference for me though. We've gone from having some of the best midfielders in the world to nothing. We have one natural central midfielder in Wilshere and even a fully fit Wilshere isn't nearly as good as Lampard, Gerrard or Scholes and would have struggled to make the squad in their era. The fact that we've taken Wilshere despite not kicking a ball for a season highlights how bad the rest are. Dier should never be making an England squad as a midifielder - maybe as a utility player - but to be starting as our first choice CM is an embarrassment.

I was saying exactly the same thing to my brother.

Where are the Scholes, the Shearers, the Sherringhams? How are we spending millions on new world-class facilities (so we're told), yet the quality of our players has dived off a cliff? Heck right now I'd take a Lampard or a Gerard, even a Michael Owen!

Tonight Iceland made us look bad, not by being Barcelona, but by successfully completing more passes, controlling the ball better, looking more composed, having better teamwork, being more clinical in front of goal... They weren't Spain or Italy, but they were *miles* better than us.

These England players all earn an absolute fortune, but they aren't doing anything remotely deserving of their stellar salaries for England.

Heck, it looked like they'd never played football in their lives.

Was criminal Rashford was brought on so late.

Thing is though the players went out there did what they were supposed to do at the start and at some point early on the game plan fell apart - instead of switching it up, etc. Roy was just there with his head in his hands so not really surprising the team fell apart.

With England there's rarely a plan B.

If after 15 mins plan A isn't working... then you've got another 75 minutes of plan A not working to come...

The other thing is (not that I know much about it) Roy played a good few out of position, which is one thing if you have a solid tactic for that, another with a shambles like that with no plan B, so I don't really blame the players.

You could say that but you can't blame Roy for bad passing, bad control, bad skill. Lack of movement, lack of foresight, lack of effort. Lack of talent. Bad crosses, bad tackles. Bad goal keeping.

I'm almost laughing that I have put all those bad things in a sentence but that team tonight genuinely did it all. As someone said above it was almost like they had never played football before, and like me and a friend said, it was almost like they were throwing the game on purpose cause they had money on iceland.

I wouldn't mind seeing Shearer have a go. Or, Hoddle with Shearer as assistant, for example. Get some of our most experienced players in there, and a manager who has a plan.

i really think i would take Shearer he really wouldn't take any ****

I'd take him over anyone else on that list (apart from Hoddle).

Can anyone really see Big Sam, or Brendan Rogers getting the players up for it? At least Shearer is an absolute England legend.
