UEFA Euro 2016 - Round of 16 **spoilers** (25th - 27th June)

Another point to consider, Iceland beat Holland twice to reach the Euro's
Everyone underestimated them.

Oh totally, people talking about it being our most embarrassing moment are bang off. They've proven plenty of time that they are a solid side that can cause most teams problems. They played well and could have scored more.

Someone phoned into Radio 5 live and said he has the answer to our problem. He said England are the only country that doesn't export players. Meaning, if English players went to foreign teams where they coach better and different, they'd learn to play better. Something like that anyway.

With England's shambolic performance tonight, the opposition almost didn't matter.

They would have lost to Andorra or San Marino.

Heck, they'd have lost to the over-50s walking football team from the Dog and Bone.

It has nothing to do with playing abroad, winter breaks or anything. It's pure and simple, they're not good enough.

Ok, so if it's not the managers, then how do you account for a country like England with over 50 million people not being able to find 11 players that ARE good enough? How do countries with considerably less population manage to find success? Is it because other countries play together as a national team more regularly?

They'll be non EU citizens in a few years so even less incentive to sign overpriced players ;)

Woy was awful all tournament. His substitutions were consistently terrible (negative subs against Russia trying to hold onto the 1-0 and waiting until 85 mins tonight to bring on Rashford being prime examples), he was defeatist and uninspiring on the touchline, the players appeared to be lacking in tactical preparation, etc. The great managers inspire their players and are visibly passionate and confident on the touchline. Hodgson spent most of the match tonight either with his head in his hands or shaking his head. How's that going to look to a player that looks across to the bench? If your manager clearly doesn't believe in you, how are you supposed to believe in yourself?

Also, there was never any visible improvement in second half performance compared to the first, so he's obviously given terrible half-time team talks. A good manager either screams at his players and scares the life out of them or reinforces their belief in their abilities. Can you imagine a United team under Ferguson being that bad after a half-time team talk? No chance. On top of all that, there appeared to be a lack of preparation for each game. How on earth were the England team that unprepared for the long throw from Iceland? They must have seen it in other matches and expected it, and having Rooney marking a key player in the box was madness.

England need a manager not just with tactical nous but one that inspires the players. There was a complete lack of any leader on the pitch tonight, but that might not have been a problem if the manager had been providing them with the positivity, enthusiasm and determination that was needed to win the game.

On a serious note, I feel England's problems have always been psychological more than anything. Sure there's been uninspiring management, questionable commitment from players at times and odd bad decision but as a whole there's always been lack of belief, fight and confidence.

England and key players without fail, have under performed in just about every tournament when pressure really piled on and results mattered. Roy has been disgracefully bad this tournament and I feel there's been some key omissions from squad selection too, but even then there is little excuse for this result. Players should have done far better tonight even with all of those circumstances thrown in though, a lot of them need to have a long hard look in the mirror.

I agree with this. I wish we would stop juggling the starting line-up and formation at the tournaments. We should have a plan (clue!) by the time the finals arrive.

Going back to your point. What really highlights it is the way the Germans are the opposite. Quiet until it matters and get better as the tournaments go on.

England are a little like Welbeck. Great away from the goal but the closer to the goal he gets, the less like a footballer he becomes!

I sort of agree with him though, we need someone who's been there, we need someone who's hungry. We don't need yet another boring pre-retirement 2-4 year appointment or a foreigner.

A foreigner who barely spoke English had the best win record of any England manager since the mid 40s.

Neoboy is correct regarding the psychological problem with our players, now this new generation of younger players will have the burden of poor tournament performances just like the 'golden generation" I feel that they are given too much too young, live a sheltered pampered lifestyle with no hardships, treated like little princess divas which leaves us with soft, mentally weak players, they all crumbled again last night to the point where they couldn't pass or control a 5 yard ball

And this is where the issue is, the England manager needs to be the best person the FA can appoint regardless of nationality.

Also as the England managers role is such a poisoned chalice name me one manager who has gone onto better things since leaving the role?

Why are all the headlines and news saying its an embarrassment?

Iceland played well, showed good spirit and didn't park the bus. They're simply a better team than we are.

Plainly obvious really isn't it. We played so badly it made them look good, some of them are part timers, and our players are payed millions per year. They have a population of 300,000. Need I go on?
