Can't believe the Southgate negativity in this thread. It's like people have forgotten the preceding 20 years of absolute dross England produced at major tournaments with, supposedly, more talented managers (and a 'golden generation' of players)

The ten minutes of 2nd half extra time were a moment of lunacy. He took a team rampant and let ten man Denmark press and lob balls at the defence creating a lottery scenario. You can't do that against good opposition. The game was also easily winnable in 90s mins yet he refused to change because in his eyes 'it was going okay' and at least not losing. As someone said, that game was won in spite of his decisions rather than because of them.

What he has done is develop a squad together and build a culture of support and respect. He deserves HUGE praise for this, I've never seen an England squad look this together, relaxed and grounded.

for those of you who have been watching at home so far, when England scored did you throw your pint all over the room?

I know it's kinda become the thing, but just wondered. Think my Mrs would murder me if she found beer all up the walls, ceiling and carpet.

also, if you do, do you have a cheap beer in hand for throwing and drink a more expensive one? Seems a waste of a good beer to me :D

What kind of alchemy do bookies rely on to do predictions or is it about creating odds to get the most people placing bets.
surely you're not suggesting they might have any other motive than trying to make as much profit as possible in any and all situations?

Venables and Hoddle were both better IMO tactically and with a more exciting style of play. We went out on pens to Germany having had Sol Campbell's(?) goal disallowed and Gazza slowing his run too early and missing that cross in. Hoddle was unlucky in that Beckham got himself sent off. We would have won that game, and continued to the final IMO had that not happened. That wasn't Hoddle's fault. He was a chump with some of the extra-curricular comments and faith healer stuff, which is why they let him go, but the football side he was knowledgable and tactically astute. Where the rot set in was Sven. Big big mistake that one. Then McClaren. Then Fabio, Then Roy, what a turgid and pathetic run that all was. Honestly if we'd kept Terry or Glen for that period we'd have been much better off. So the real issue is actually the FA and the idiots there who thought McClaren et al were a good prospect to begin with. They're so concerned with image and reputation and the like they would ditch a good manager for a more respectable amiable duffer. It's a similar thing to Clough never getting the England job - he was seen as too working class and too blunt in his opinions. Again, huge mistake.

of course not, and I have a corona in one hand and a whisky in the other. No way I'm throwing anything though, whether in my house or outside somewhere else. It's a silly thing to do generally, but especially in these covid times. If I wanted to get soaking wet in a mass gathering I'd at least make it a foam party or the like. A much more enjoyable affair that way.

Forget my wife, I'd be furious with myself if I couldn't control myself and made a mess of the living room, along with the waste of a good beer (any beer's a good one)! I also usually drink whisky and definitely wouldn't be wasting one of those.

I stuck £50 on Italy at 14/1 before the tournament. The England tears will make the winnings even sweeter :D

Don't really know anyone who would chuck beer around in their own or someone else's house, if someone tried that in my gaff they'd be cleaning up and paying for any damage.

5 at the back again vs Italy do you reckon?

The whole point of throwing beers around is it's done at big events not in people's houses, except for accidents. I've probably accidently spilled a bit of drink or knocked over a glass of wine at some point or other celebrating a goal.
I remember in 2012 were at Olympic handball in the Copperbox, in between matches I was watching a stream of Andy Murray in the tennis final on my phone and shook up this bottle of Heineken that frothed up everywhere. Rock and roll.

It's a mix of things, baseline it is is done on probability algorithms but the odds will alter depending on where their exposure is, for example if they had a flood of bets in Italy they would likely shorten the odds.
In terms of attracting bets they only want to do that within reason, there is no point creating a silly high price to attract punters if the odds on offer are beyond the statistical probability. The one exception to this is loss-leader promotions e.g. offering new customers 25-1 on England winning a corner or whatever, max stake £1, winnings paid in free bets.

My fav memories are the England Tunisia match in 1998 when we legged it out of exams to get to a mate's house to watch it. Scholes goal etc
I'm almost certain I had an A level exam that day as well (one of the group stage games), I had 25% extra time so missed the match, I could hear England fans cheering in the background heh.

I'm not a gambling man but still wish I'd stuck something on Leicester when it was 5000-1. Can you imagine £100 on that? Pay off the mortgate that would.

They go with the market, sometimes they increase odds on someone who you'd consider to be the favourite to start getting some money in if the other option is getting backed heavily.

The one example I can think of in this competition was Belgium Vs Russia. I guess Russia were getting a lot of money from over there so they drifted Belgium out to 11/10 which was a silly price. Easy money for those backing Belgium.
