Quite shocked to see people saying Italy were excellent. They really aren't that good at all, we just sat back and let them do what they like.

If we'd been aggressive we could have tied up that defence in knots. Instead they were able to relax for most of the game.

To put it in simple terms, you have 2 old, slow centre backs pressing high near the half way line. The way to force them back and counter is with fast players. Kane and Mount are not that.

if there was a europa league equivalent of the euro's i think england would be first or second favourites, and rightly so
There are plenty of teams that could and would beat us. I think expecting England to take 1st or 2nd (with the current manager) is wishful thinking, in a league format.

Southgate mostly gets found out against the top teams, and has mostly beaten 2nd-tier teams thus fur. Germany being the exception. With respect to the Czechs, Croatia, Scotland, Sweden, Denmark, Ukraine, Columbia - they aren't teams you expect to win it. They are 2nd-tier teams.

Southgate wasn't prepared to sub kane.

Mount needed to go earlier. Even sterling if he wasn't going to take a top 5 pen could have been removed.

I hate all this BS about how England just had an easy ride and we're secretly rubbish all along and lucky to make it to the final. Yes, Italy were definitely better on the night, and I think Southgate made some bad calls. But the rest of the tournament was almost perfect for us. You have to beat whoever is front of you, and some other top teams completely failed to do that. But I suppose they were just UNLUCKY, huh?

I was hard on Southgate yesterday, but today I'm more neutral. Can we just have him for coaching defense - and somebody more creative for coaching the rest?

In fairness to Italy that is being good- winning a match by doing the best you can. The way they passed it one-touch around us for extended periods was clever play. Winning is everything. They won. They were better on the day.

That their aging centrebacks got so high is because we weren't pushing forwards to give them anything to think about. They made us look average, so we can't say they're past-it if we are supposed to have such a good squad. Either they are average and we weren't performing, or we were doing our best and they made us look average. Either way they won. Italy were the better side on the day.

We came 3rd in 2019's nation's league, so not sure we can say that. Is this year's even still happening given the Euros got pushed back?
Sadly, the Nation's League isn't even a league format, lol. It's divided into groups where the winners enter a mini knockout stage.

And last time we finished 3rd in a group with Belgium, Denmark and Iceland.

What's all this about England winning a league format competition? :p There's no basis for this all (with current management).

The first question is does it have to be an Englishman? So many managers could work wonders with this squad, but it's that same debate since the appointment of Sven as whether they need to be English to be invested in the team and really push for us to go as far as possible. It's a bit weird to think you wouldn't want to do your job as well as possible, and get the accolades that go with it. The counter question is did we draw with Sweden under Sven because he was content with that for both sides?

If we are saying just English managers, then those two are good picks. I think Potter has Brighton playing well, and it would be interesting to see what he might bring.

I also wish we'd had a few games under Allardyce to see what he would have done. I don't think he'd have been that great tbh, but we have nothing to really benchmark him on. Probably fair to see he'd have done better than McClaren at least.

Say no more, Potter or Allardyce. Absolutely not both would be abysmal appointments.

I'd rather English there more passionate, there's only Howe I'd potentially fancy seeing currently.

I suppose none of this matters, the FA think Southgate is wonderful and are desperate to extend his contract. He won't be going anywhere for a long, long time.

My Nan could organise a defence if she was given 8/11 players who’s main duty is defence. 3 at the back, 2 wing backs, 2 DMs and the GK. Not massively impressive and offered almost nothing in attack.

Doesn't matter anyhow. The FA are going to give Southgate a job for life :p

I hope we meet a top-tier team early in the WC. Not because I want us to lose (those with the faith shouldn't expect this anyhow) but because I don't want all the hype after beating Czechs, Croatia, Ukraine, etc.

Let's have a nice big early test and see how we do. I'd much prefer that. Heck let's be in the group of death. Let's have to personally knock out the favourites.

Then we'll talk about how great (or otherwise) Southgate is.

The first game we were relatively poor but got over the line against an aging Croatia team that wasn't particularly good either.

We were then outplayed by Scotland.

Against the Czechs we were OK, got a goal and held onto the lead although the Czechs went close also.

Against Germany we were on the back foot for a lot of the game but scored on the counter then we got lucky with Germany missing a sitter and got another on the counter as Germany pushed men forward.

Ukraine was arguably are best performance but were a weak team who had punched above their weight to get to the QFs.

Denmark were there for the taking but we started the game super defensively and in the first half come unstuck, we had to throw on some attacking players but still remained quite cautious, a lucky penalty saw us avoid the shootout and go through to face Italy.

Against Italy we had a dream start but in reality it was a curse in disguise since once Southgate got the orders on to sit back and defend we were all at sea and it was only a matter of time before the Italian pressure paid off. The team was tired in the second half and needed subs, we had 5 to use but used 2 and there was no change in tactics.

In extra time we brought Grealish on for mount and looked a bit better but by then it was too late and the manager had already settle for pens by saving 2 of his remaining 3 available subs for that rather than bring them on earlier and trying to push for a winner. The lads brought on late just for penalties had extra pressure heaped on them and were effectively thrown under the bus by the manager and the same for Saka at just 19 being expected to take the 5th spot kick.

I don't blame the players at all and thought they did their best in the circumstances, most of them play for teams which play good attacking football but were expected to play like a burnley in a relegation run in. They overachieved in getting to the final with the team selection and tactics employed by the manager IMO.

The manager learned nothing from our loss in the World Cup semis to Croatia as this final mirrored that game for tactics and use of subs. Unfortunately I expect to see more of the same in Qatar 2022.

This. I'm actually quite surprised more people don't see it this way. Saving subs for pens is just soooo negative. It really gives you insight (if you didn't already know) what goes through Southgate's mind. Should we try to win? No, let's settle for pens against the best GK in the competition.

Then bring on kids to take them, whilst heaping on the pressure by being subbed on just to take a pen...

I think we have to take away the good highlights of the tournament too.

We only conceded 2 goals in the tournament (excluding penalties).

The 2 goals game from a Danish free kick, and an Italian scramble from a corner kick.

No team managed to score against us in regular open play.

We remained unbeaten in all matches up until going out of penalties.

We beat Germany 2-0 in the knockout phase of the tournament!

I also think the Denmark game was the best for us, as we had to come from behind to win.
