Phillips or Rice is fine as the destroyer but I think you need a passer alongside one of them

The trouble is neither of them destroyed anything. They trotted around playing 5 yard sideways and backwards passes. They slowed the game down every time England tried to get some tempo they walked about. We didn't need one of them, let alone both.

Jesse Lingard sitting watching football at the Peter Crouch show.

He’d have probably done a better job tonight than most out there.

He would have suffered the same as the others.

Kane will only score if he gets chances and how many chances were created for him in the last couple of games?

This set up just doesn't suit him, he just doesn't seem to know where to be and that comes down to the manager. I mean people are asking for Grealish and Henderson and he's clearly at least as match ready as they are.

Not that it matters, we have such a wealth of attacking talent. No matter who plays England fans will be moaning the others aren't playing. It didn't matter who was coming on last night, with that little urgency or desire to take a risk the front were ****ed.

At one point in the game, James was in the centre of the box and Kane was on the wing. Kane crossed it and James took a shot which of course was no where near going in.

This is completely backwards. I get that Kane drops deep for Tottenham and creates goals for Son etc but he needs to stop doing this for England. He needs to be our striker because the people around him aren’t making the runs or holding the line in his stead like at Tottenham.

It’s been the same in the past dozen games or so, he’s dropping too deep. If he’s not getting service then that’s a problem that needs sorting out but not by him going out of position.

I think against teams that park the bus, two cdms is the problem. Yes Philips played well against Croatia but he didn’t show up yesterday. We should have taken him off for Bellingham. It was the link between defence and attack that was letting us down.

As an aside, it’s a shame we don’t have the option of Vardy, Ings or Bamford. I also don’t know why we didn’t put DCL on for Kane instead of Rashford.
Kane seems to be drifting around without a purpose or game plan and so do the others. It was the same in the Croatia game but we got lucky and scored so it papered over the cracks but anyone who regularly watches football knows we did not perform well in that game either.

Things need a drastic shake up in the next game and the shackles need to come off else we might as well pack our bags already.

Rashford coming on with 15 mins to go and then proceeding to jog around like he'd just finished a marathon rather than pressing the ball summed the game up nicely.

Dumb thought, is he trying to orchestrate finishing 2nd on purpose? Only reason I can think of for playing this team so badly.

Kane looks like a caveman surrounded by next gen Young, fit, fast skillful players, in both games so far and pretty much every other serious international game.

Completely ineffective. Zero impact on the game.

No chance city would sign him after seeing how cumbersome he really is.

City and Pep have a game plan, England and Southgate don't.

Stick Kane in a team that's usually camped around their opponents 18 yard box or on the end of De Bruyne's crosses and he's getting 30+ a season.
Yeah I agree, I think Kane's criticism is unfair as he ain't scoring when the ball is being played between our defence on the halfway line. I'd imagine he's pretty fed up right now.

I think north Macedonia have looked better than us going forward so far.

Someone asked Zinedine Zidane what it was like to be the best midfielder in the world, he said “I don’t know ask Billy Gilmour”

Chuckled when I read that :D

There's no real interplay beyond passing the ball backwards and sideways at the half way line, our best chance came to our CB from a set piece.

Kane's starved of service, Sterling looks busy but spends most of his time running straight into defenders with the ball. The players look as though they've never played a game together which given that the two friendlies prior to the tournament were wasted sounds about right.

Nah it's the Yorkshire Pudding er I mean Pirlo.

Gilmour is going to need a move. They should loan him to Everton.

I can guarantee this is what he is looking at. To finish second and avoid the group of death. England never used to be like this. It all started to change after around 2006 ish. You always thought we could beat the big teams or at least equal them. Now it is completely different. Having a captain like Harry Kane who has won nothing doesn't help either. Long gone are the days of Tony Adams, Alan Shearer, John Terry.
Could be an interesting game vs the Czechs if both teams want to lose :p
Manger needs to get the boot after this euro because he aint winning it. Brendan rodgers is the man we need.
Why would he do that? He has a chance of winning things at Leicester!

It is not that though. Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Man Utd players play with a front three and not an "old fashioned" striker like Kane where the players are constantly rotating throughout the game. Kane does well at Spurs as the attack is built around him and Son. City, United, Liverpool, Chelsea can rotate their forwards as they all play that modern role.

It is not to say Kane is a bad player. He is fantastic but the system needs to be made for him. Gareth is obviously trying to play the systems the top teams play but is trying to fit Kane in it.

He is a fantastic player no doubt but he looked incredibly lost yesterday. Likewise when Rashford came on. He was trying to fit in but kept drifting into Grealish's space as it is his natural position. This is purely poor coaching

All these things should have been figured out long before the tournament started but instead Gareth is using the Tournament to figure out his best squad.

I think that's why in 2018 we did well because we played pretty much unchanged from the get go.

That is not to say it cannot be changed. Venebles made that formation change during the 96 Scotland game and the rest was History. We were pretty poor up till that point.

The problem with England is, they always try to walk it in.

I think the problem with England is too many of them are used to playing alongside world class players in the Premier League, but the issue is, these world class players that add flare and finnesee aren't often English! So when England play, they are often waiting for someone else to do the clinical run/pass/shot.

The PL is a double-edged sword, it cripples England at a national level.
