I definitely haven't. We are not "easily top 3" IMO. Belgium and France have blatantly better squads so that's saying we are easily better than all the other teams.
Sorry, I should have bolded the part about the "bottom 3 manager" :p

I don't think we're in the top 3 in terms of squad, but I do think we should be able to give any team a decent game and not get walked over by any of them. Otherwise why are all these England players earning so much money...

Really? Looking at their squad I can only think of 4 players that would get into our side. Courtois and KdB are the two big upgrades, Tielemans and if you were going purely off reputation then Hazard. I'd struggle to name more than 4 more that would make our squad too.

It's hard to tell because Southgate has them all playing with the shackles firmly on, afraid to do anything other than pass backwards, in case we do something contra to the plan like score a goal.

Did anyone listen to Sterling's interview afterwards? He's a striker, and he said, "The most important thing is not to concede." That's the mindset Southgate has instilled into these players. Even our strikers are more worried about conceding a goal than anything else.

I think we've all reached that conclusion. Dire to watch and extremely limited in ambition. Just don't concede a goal!
I think Southgate is modelling us on the 2004 Greece side and thinks we can 1-0 our way to the trophy, if we do go behind though and are chasing a game will we be able to switch to a cavalier mindset?.

To be slightly fair to Kane he does attract a lot of attention and marking hampering his performance and why he probably plays a bit deeper (not that other high profile strikers don't get that and still manage to perform) - but we don't really capitalise on that to draw other teams out.

Like er, Lukaku or Ronaldo?

Looks like they have been suffering from the same treatment too ..

You missed out Lakuku

England qualify top of their group with a masterclass of attacking football which fills the team with confidence and bravado. They thrashed Croatia….er, 1-0, drew with the team that finished bottom of the group 0-0 and then put the Czech Republic to the sword with a dominant win, the final score line being….er…1-0 again. England’s players are flying high on confidence having scored less goals that Lukaku as a team. I’m sure their next opponents are quaking in their boots at the prospect of playing such a powerhouse, high on confidence.

Support another national team then?

I expect we’ll be playing Germany from looking at that group.

England vs Germany at Wembley, if only it was ‘normal’ times. I’d like to think the game against Germany will be more open, we’re bound to concede but I think we’ll also get chances to score on counters.

Yes. And no. I’m Scottish but definitely not anti England. I just think scoring two goals in two 1-0 wins and playing very defensively three games in a row and managing to nick two 1-0 wins is a very poor way to prepare your squad for the knockout rounds. I fully expect England’s imminent exit to France or Germany. Southgate is an awful manager, more concerned about not losing than winning. Sure, top of the group and all that but the team should be high on confidence playing open attacking football instead of the dreary defensive stuff they are.

A while back someone asked about Kane's performances for Spurs etc. From the matches I've seen I think he seems to play best when it's all about attack-attack-attack, high press and surge forward with Son, Bale, Moura etc sprinting out. Southgate says he's built his team around him but suffocates him at the same time, just like Mourinho was starting to do before he departed their club.

Southgate donkeyed the opportunity to get Sterling and Vardy sprinting out at the last world cup, and he's doing similar again here. We won that Czech game because covid restrictions forced Gareth to play someone new who decided to actually run and try to make things happen. . Grealish went whoopee and joined in and the two of them got the whole team up the pitch. What we need are strikers who will go with them and be in the places to receive the ball in the box. Apart from Kane's one shot on target and a couple of runs out chasing a long ball, he didn't seem to do much last night. In the post match interview Southgate sounded surprised, almost said at one point it was Saka's improvisation!

Defend by all means, but you've got to attack man. Look at Leicester 2015-2016. Defend hard and then attack hard. That's how you win when you're not the best. By making sure you make chances when you can, and hit them hard when you move through the gears. That team wasn't the best defensively, but they made it count, overturning several 2-0 down or 3-0 down situations to win matches. I just can't see England in their current tactics and mindset being able to overturn a one goal deficit, nevermind 2 or 3.

My point exactly. Look at the difference in Spurs' performances with Mourinho, then once he'd gone and Mason took the shackles off and just let them play. That's England's problem right now IMO. That and a weird squad selection to start with.

It's the football equivalent of someone setting up their RPG character in Diablo et al and max-ing out defence while sticking with a 3-hit point daggers even as they descend into the lower realms. They then wonder why they always die before they kill anything, so spend even more on armour and health potions missing the point that you need to max out the attack so you can strike hard and fast and avoid being damaged to start with. Or perhaps given Kane's presence they bought along a 40 hit-point maul, but neglected to up the character strength so they can't actually wield it, and end up just having to carry it in their pack the whole time as dead-weight.
