Well, at least we got out of the group. We will be going home after the next match though because it will be one of France, Portugal or Germany and we will get wrecked.

if its portugal you might have an outside chance. Germany or France will carve you up like a sunday lunch at Toby carvery

Speaking of things getting wrecked it's just as well it's in the UK. At least now when the lout fans go on the rampage following our humiliating thrashing they'll be trashing their own homeland and not someone else's country. The Danes must be relieved we're not playing in Copenhagen.

If it's Germany we play I wouldn't be surprised at a 3 goal deficit (or possibly more). Suffering a brazil style 7-1 thumping wouldn't be impossible against France tbh.

I wouldn't be so generous about our chances with Portugal. Bruno Fernandes and Ronaldo vs Stones or Mings? That's only going one way.

Permutations for tonight apparently:

France win, Germany win/draw - we play Germany
France draw, Germany win - we play France
France draw, Germany draw - we play Germany
France lose, Germany win - we play Portugal
France win, Hungary win - we play Hungary
France draw, Germany lose - we play Portugal

The trouble is, if we lose 7-1 to Germany, Southgate will simply conclude we need to be more defensively minded :p :p

Maybe next tournament we can play 11 right-backs?

Exactly, it's what I was saying above in a previous post
It's the football equivalent of someone setting up their RPG character in Diablo et al and max-ing out defence while sticking with a 3-hit point daggers even as they descend into the lower realms. They then wonder why they always die before they kill anything, so spend even more on armour and health potions missing the point that you need to max out the attack so you can strike hard and fast and avoid being damaged to start with. Or perhaps given Kane's presence they bought along a 40 hit-point maul, but neglected to up the character strength so they can't actually wield it, and end up just having to carry it in their pack the whole time as dead-weight.

I think Southgate thinks we lost the world cup because we didn't defend well enough when actually we needed to attack better against Croatia and that would have finished them off.

The best form of defence is attack. If we’re in their half they can’t score!

You mean if the ball's in their half. Also remember the 2nd Czech goal against Scotland, or Portugal's breakaway goal against Germany. It's not just where the ball is it's how quickly they can shift it on the break, and whether the keeper is in a good/vulnerable position etc.

It's depressing that when we get a goal in the first 15 mins, the mindset switches to defending that 1 goal lead for the remaining 75 minutes.

Surely Southgate has watched all the videos of England giving away a 1 goal lead. It's bonkers trying to win all the games be a 1 goal margin, but that's what he's set us up to do.

Seriously we should bring a class action for the all the people given heart attacks when England try to defend a 1 goal advantage 30 mins or more :p

Yup. It didn't work against Croatia in 2018 and it won't work now, but weirdly, no change in tactics.

Southgate needs to sit down with the squad and repeatedly watch the September 2001 game against the Germans.

he'll be saying "look how out of defensive shape they are. What kind of formation is that to defend with? I don't want to see any of that kind of indiscipline lads ok?"

Probably followed up with "that is not how we win games"

"How can our strikers defend properly when they're so high up the pitch?"
