If our lads sang the national anthem as passionately as the Italian players sing theirs, it would likely be seen as a microaggression by some odd folk in this country.

None of them, like most of the country, know the words, so just mumble/make it look like they are singing.
A bit off-topic now, but I'd say we're on a kind of slow decline. I look at the place where I grew up and it's a complete ****-hole now.It really hasn't, we have just been bombarded with ******** in the media about how horrible the country is and everyone on twitter saying that everyone is racist, sexist and a transphobe.
Nope, you can go back to 96 to see some players properly belting it out the passion was the important part.
thisOoh have we touched a nerve? Read the posts - I'm happy if we win, and if we don't, well it's not my religion and I won't be devasted like the less savoury elements of our "supporters" I encounter round these parts.
no we really ahve gone backwards but thats for another thread, not hereIt really hasn't, we have just been bombarded with ******** in the media about how horrible the country is and everyone on twitter saying that everyone is racist, sexist and a transphobe.
We are just a country of self loathing. Most countries are proud of their nationality and have the slight amount of intelligence to understand that nowhere is perfect but that doesn't mean you can't have pride in your country without being a xenophobic oik.
There doesn't seem to be much middle ground anymore.
Yeah but half the squad(at least) wasnt born then, have fewer caps, wont know the words.
Still missing the point and has nothing to do with when they were born

The middle classes are doing OK but the poor are still poor, and there's no reason to look after their own homes because they all rent from private landlord. The council's don't have money to look after the place any more, and it's all just falling apart.
Inequality is destroying places like where I grew up. So yeah, we are going backwards in some metrics.
I'm not, just disagreeing.
It's true, the biggest factor in international football is how loudly you sing a completely meaningless song.
If any comparison could be made, Denmark are like the Leicester of the Premier League, not just saying because of Schmeichel, however the odds back in 92, were probably the same as when we won the league.
yup and players like sterling will get abused outside of a game but praised as the second coming whenever he scored for england or even the club they support.
No you're confusing the Euros with Eurovision. One has a load of groups of enthusiatic people, some bearded, in silly clothes, prancing around a stage while singing some nonsense before some questionable judging and lots of spectators decides who wins, the other has teams of people, some with beards, in silly clothes singing an anthem, half the time badly, or sometimes unintelligibly, before prancing around a pitch with a ball, whereby some questionable refereeing influences who wins to the mirth/misery of the many spectators. It's true, the biggest factor in international football is how loudly you sing a completely meaningless song.
well saidYeah, you can thank Blair et al for suggesting it's "racist" to fly the union jack or suggest that maybe we should talk about whether we wanted complete freedom of movement within the EU. Then Blair and Brown for deregulating the financial services industry contributing to the 2008 crash, then Cameron and Osborne for defunding pretty much all public services and welfare under the name of "austerity" while pandering to their rich chums and restricting hmrc investigation into offshore and tax evasion etc.
Inequality is growing and the gov. don't give a damn, yet enough average people keep voting for them because "taxes are bad". FFS we'll get like Greece before too long.
It's about the passion and how some people view that these days when it all looks a bit too patriotic.
Well good job you're not one of those fans that flip flops like that hey!
What if you are actually not that "proud" of your country due to how its been run and the kind of people there? The italian players and fans were belting out their national anthem before the game. You can never accuse the Italians of being a bit limp when it comes to patriotism. Why not eh? You should be proud to represent your country at the highest level of any sport.
You're trying to suggest the players can't remember a few words despite them likely being more educated than the lads were back then.
