Who could actually sing the national anthem.....I dont know the words other than a few lines, why would young players. Far more likely/logical than being scared to be patriotic, thats Daily Mail level nonsense.

Just because you can't memorise a few words doesn't mean everyone else can't. The Italian's manage theirs fine and it's more complex than the version of the anthem our players sing.

I didn't say the players were scared either, you need to go back and read the original message. I wasn't suggesting our players should sing it louder, just if they were all giving it Stuart Pearce as the Italian's still do, some people would have an issue with that level of patriotism in this country.

No surprise, the forum member who likes to label people gammons has an issue with English patriotism being discussed :)

I can, for 2 definitely and possible a good 4 verses, though I think there may be 5 in the official one, but I think the cub scout handbook left out the one about bashing the scots.

What if you are actually not that "proud" of your country due to how its been run and the kind of people there?

You see, part of being proud of a international team is backed by actually being proud of the country itself and the way you feel its being run etc etc.

Basically, for me anyway i support and back the england football team and its staff.

When would you ever have cause to be proud of England then? We have always been involved in questionable actions and have had plenty of bad people like every other country. In my eyes being proud of your country is being proud of the good parts and celebrating a shared experience and a shared goal.

well it turns out the cubscout handbook ditched the real vs 2 as well as the version I learnt went 1,3 etc. So there are actually 6 verses

edit check out the 4th verse. Now there's one we should surely be able to get behind. Why the heck don't we make them play a 2nd verse and add this on after the first? That's surely better promotion of anti-hate than kneeling. England, at Wembley, with that on the big screen for people to sing. It would quickly show where people's priorities lie asking them to sing and applaud that.

Not in this land alone,
But be God’s mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world over.

Any ideas on team selection? Hope he plays sancho, played really well last game and was attack minded on the ball rather than the usual sideways.

I thought Sancho looked exciting, but the stats say Saka achieved more. However, stats do not measure the intimidation of the opposition caused by Sancho skinning them repeatedly and the meandering runs he made that forced them to sit back a bit more than they would have liked to (seeing how they played against Sweden). Against Denmark, who like to sit back a bit, I think Saka might be the better option but only if he's fit. I think this might be a match for Grealish tbh though. He has that knack of drawing people in, and with that defence it's what we'll need IMO.

You're trying to suggest the players can't remember a few words despite them likely being more educated than the lads were back then.

I think it's more a suggestion that they've simply never really cared enough about the anthem to bother/need to learn it, so they mumble along, that's why you don't see them up there like some sort of Pavarotti tribute giving it every last lungful :p

I can't really remember any scenario where i've ever had cause to need to know the words and im sure the same is true of a lot of the young England players these days, right up until they get an England call up.

Kind of a laugh singing that given the country voted for brexit though.

You could make the same argument for the young Italian players though and again, the version of GSTQ the players sing is relatively simple. I'm not bothered how they sing it or even if they choose not to, I was questioning how it would be perceived these days by some people if they were all giving it Adams/Pearce. It seems fine for some nations to be really patriotic but when it's England it's obnoxious, arrogant and bordering on xenophobic for some.

The discussion stemmed from a member saying he would be almost happy for us to lose because it would make those unsavoury fans feel even worse about their lives than they already do.

yeah but the counter to that (and I was a remainer) is that it's not unpatriotic or counter to those words to have voted either way - at its core was a decision on increasing political unification, and while a lot of peolpe voted how they did for other reasons, the leavers can make a case that political sovereignty does not negate recognising equality or seeking the welfare of others. The reality of the outworking however seems to suggest otherwise. But let's not go there, this thread is about football, and why Saka/Grealish should start.

Kasper schmeichel was asked today in press conference how he will stop it coming home

his reply was

burnt, absolutely burnt
LOL so apt.

I cant recall anyone bemoaning someone belting out GSTQ.......seem to be conflating issues to me.
I don't think anyone is - I think the original comment, and I cba to go back to check, was about people pretending they knew the words and then whether anyone could actually recite more than 1 verse of it anyway.

Betfair are saying that from leaked reports Saka is back in the starting XI replacing Sancho, rest is the same.

Think all the other matches they’ve been correct so it’s probably likely!

I've never seen or heard this be an issue for anyone I know in real life. I'm sure there's a few loons on Twitter, as there always is, but I don't think this is an actual issue for the vast vast vast majority of people.
