Yes, it’s just the effects which are CGI and lights. On the original series they had smoke bombs.

I don’t think it’s true they had to stop the sphere on the pod last time as noted above, you just had to roll over the middle and it looked the same this time.

In any case the spheres looked hardcore. The main difference I can see to the original is they seem to have put something down on the floor so the spheres slide about a lot more and have less traction. It seems to have slowed them down a bit but made them harder to control. The scoring pods are a bit shallower to compensate for the lower speed/grip.

I think the difference is that this time the CGI effects for the hit are done by an observer where as the smoke was automatic and a bit temperamental. I did notice there was one score this week where it didn't look like the guy was actually on top but he was already losing by miles and the gladiators weren't even going after him so maybe they just felt sorry for him.
