UK holidays

£24 for fuel there and back to the Lake District from Brum?!? What do you drive a 1 litre Fiat Panda?!....also you are forgetting accomodation.

e-Niro ;)

Accommodation I can carry

£30 for food for a couple?!

Absolutely, some cured meats, trail mix, bit of couscous, dried fruit, a few veggies, secret spice mix, stuff like bacon, sausages etc. Obviously if we decide to pop into a pub at some point that pushes it up dramatically.

Actually, I forgot the obligatory bottle of single malt, so add another £40-50 :p

As several others have already pointed out, we all want different things from a holiday. I live in a city, for me, being in the middle of the hills/forest/whatever, with just my mates/brothers and nobody else for miles around, just the noise of the wind in the grass and rain, cooking on an open fire is ******* perfect *chef's kiss*.

If I wanted a comfortable bed, great food, and to be surrounded by other people, I'd just stay at home ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Of course, that's not a holiday I'd take my other half on, but then the UK has other options. We went to Cornwall for a few days in May, stayed in a fancy spa hotel, perfect weather; sunny but not too hot. Drank too many cocktails, saw some dolphins. Yes we could have probably gone abroad for a few days instead if we doubled our budget, but I'm not sure what we would have gained from it?

Edit: we also would have lost flexibility - we decided to extend our stay for an extra night. If we'd been abroad that would have cost a fortune as we'd have had to cancel & rebook our flights at the last minute!

BHX flys to loads of places like Mallorca, Spain, Turkey, Eastern European places, Thailand, India

Of those, the only one I find remotely appealing is Eastern Europe. Thailand I wouldn't mind, but the other half isn't a good flyer :( I do find it amusing the posters saying they want to go on holiday to be surrounded by foreign accents, and then choose to go to Mallorca & Spain

I reckon you'd love Zakopane in Poland during the summer - maybe even the winter if you also enjoy snow.

That does look pretty nice - the other half also wants to go to Auschwitz, so Poland is definitely on the cards at some point. Somewhat reluctant to go that way at the moment due to Ukraine though, and we were planning on combining it with a visit to Chernobyl as part of a longer trip, but that's obviously not happening any time soon!!! :(

Understand the Ukraine anxiety to a degree, wife/son are going to Poland for a month in August to see family and just as it was when they went last year, i'll be keeping a keen eye on the news.

Paying a fortune to sleep in someone else's uncomfortable bed and eat their mediocre cooking is not a holiday for me ;)

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind glamping, but with 2 young kids full on camping and roughing it is not my idea of fun.

If it was just me, it would be less of an issue.

Where I go there is no mediocre cooking or food, and I've will never go to an all inclusive or a resort ever ever ever. Except maybe once I decide to do a cruise. And sleeping on a bed is far more agreeable :p

Plenty of places in the UK for you then

Ah Schrodingers UK, simultaneously the best place to holiday whilst being overrun with immigrants ;)

My main issue with the UK has always been the weather. Love it or loath it, a week in Wales that costs almost as much as a week abroad where you get rain falling basically perpetually the whole time is why we generally go abroad for main holidays.

If your limited in time you can take, which most are, I value the almost certainty of weather very highly.
Saying that, had a couple of days bad weather in the Caribbean that puts bad UK weather to shame.
Totally biblical levels of rain and lightning!

I Like your points on the weather but I'd be travelling for the cold, the snow. Not the heat.
Air travel is just hassle, I don't care what people say its annoying.

Scotland for me, as far away from people as possible :), love the mountains.

Mid Wales, great for outdoor stuff and it looks stunning.

Well we're used to having dinner and staying up past 10pm on holidays , firm believer of kids being seen and heard. Let them live their best life.

Oh absolutely, we're taking about 25 of them away camping with our local scout group next weekend

Definitely need some time away from them occasionally as well though

Thats true. Unfortunate requirement is the air travel. Saying that, road travel in the UK is not to be taken lightly either!
There are things you can do to minimise it, fly a decent airline (when we went skiing in March we flew swissair, not easy jet for example)
When flying BA make sure this at minimum one curtain between you and the riffraff ;)

The UK is expensive though. I can book a 5* for a week in the canaries for late this year, all inclusive, for only slightly more than a week in centre parks self catering.
We are planning to do Scotland and semi tour, probs 2 nights in 3 or 4 places and I bet thats going to cost similar as well.

Maybe we could make parts of the UK adults only for a few weeks of the year. The appeal would go up significantly! ;)

Lake District is amazing, well worth a visit.

But it’s often cheaper to go abroad.

Edit - already mentioned in the thread in an itemised fashion!
