Malaysian Airlines - not having a lot of luck lately are they?

Sad for the 295 people and their families, puzzling why commercial airlines are still flying over active war zones.... oh wait, no it isn't. It'll save them £50 worth of fuel...

Also tragic for those who work at Malaysian Airlines. Over 500 passengers have lost their lives on this airline this year. Can they even survive as a business now?

Why a passenger plane bound for Malaysia? I can't see what motivation there is to shoot it down unless it's to blame the other side?

Terrible news :(

Imagine if ISIS get access to the sort of SAM that can knock out a commercial airliner at cruising altitude.

someone will have thought it was another military transport plane they fly only a bit lower than passenger jets and one was already shot down before

someones SAM set to auto?
very sad for the passengers and family :(

Aye, and not likely to be a man portable missile given the heights involved at a guess.

So either a fixed/vehicle based launcher set to auto, or someone not bothering to check the target.

Listening to the news there is a suggestion it was a BUK missile launcher that the rebels had, and were claiming to have shot down an aircraft earlier.

I guess it will be similar to when the US shot down the passenger plane in the middle east in the 80's.

Very sad news :(.

Russia have form on this, they shot down a passenger plane in the cold war that had strayed over the border and it resembled a US spy plane.

Theres not much excuse this time except no plane should be over the Ukraine imo

Flight was reportedly traveling at 10km, indicating a very advanced AA system would have been needed to shoot it down http://bit.ly/1t9ezi1
