Russia will invade Ukraine, kick their arses and take over Eastern Ukraine.

USA / Europe will act like pussys because Russia more than a match for them, and just dish out more sanctions, they only do military action when the opponents are weak.

Russia currently have more tanks on the border ready to go into action *the 3 day plan* than nato has available in 5 days notice. would be nukes or nothing if they made for the fulder gap right now.

There won't be any nukes or any large scale conflicts, don't be silly. Even Russia invades Ukraine the most likely scenario is Russia becoming bankrupt.

its in reply to my quoted comment - I don't think Russia wants to go head to head with NATO , militarily they might do some damage - but all the EU would do is turn off the gas and oil supplies (as you said) , and the money would quickly run out. problem though , what would putin do when his people are starving as a result?

Nobody wants full scale war. It's just too costly in terms of attrition and manpower. I doubt NATO will want to become involved - and if they are provoked into some kind of military action you watch China jump in. It could result in something far larger and far more costly than what we are facing now. I just don't get it really. The best thing we can do is starve Russia of its economical clout, which is what we are doing. I read the other day that some Russian holiday companies went bust as a result of sanctions. They had tourists stuck in their foreign resorts. This is the right way to go about things. Cripple their economy and squeeze them into submission.

Putin holds all the cards unfortunately. NATO won't get involved, and the West are heavily reliant on Russia's gas. So any sanctions will not hit them where it really hurts, otherwise the West will suffer.

Russia's economy however is on a knife edge. It can not afford a sizeable conflict, Putin will simply bankrupt Russia.

Its like a fine game of chess, however only the kings and a couple pawns are left. There will be no big moves, and no surprises. A result will be grinded out eventually.

That's interesting - is the west so heavily reliant on Russian oil, or is it that oil from elsewhere, is simply piped through Russia?

No, the West isn't reliant on Russian oil. It does take roughly 20-25% of its gas from Russia, which is a lot but I wouldn't called it a reliance either.

Only some countries in the EU, particularly the Baltic ones, are 80-100% reliant on Russian gas.

It's about to go off between Russia and Ukraine it seems, if these reports of a column of Russian armour getting splattered by Ukranian artillery on Ukranian territory can be verified.

I'm not talking about a full scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, but in order to maintain the Russian 'strongman' persona at home, Putin will have to be seen to do something I fear, even if his forces were caught illegally on Ukranian territory.

I think this will be the point where Russia finally backs down. Putin seems to be applying soviet politics, pushing and prodding, testing the waters but not quite crossing the "point of no return". The report regarding the empty Russian aid trucks was enlightening, it reminded me of the cartboard ICMBs the soviets were parading during the early 80s.

Its at this point Russia pile in with the 2 combat divisions they have on the border in another annexation , I mean protection action

Probably in a similar vein prodding wise they've moved a load of ICBMs mostly topols (which are in no way range limited) into parts of Russia North East of Kiev and been doing demonstrations/tours to civilians, etc.

So I was reading another article on the BBC here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-28858542).

Totally serious article, nothing funny about it. Until I got to the Ukrainian commander's name.

A prominent pro-Ukraine commander, Semen Semenchenko, suffered shrapnel wounds when his unit came under mortar attack in Ilovaisk. He is considered one of the most popular of the volunteer commanders in the country.

I couldn't keep a straight face after that. Wonder what was on his mother's mind when she named him...

Ok so the Ukrainian forces have now surrounded Donetsk and begun shelling it, does anyone else see a big elephant here?

When Gadaffi did the EXACT same thing we then joined on the rebels side and basically won the entire civil war for them, yet this time because it's our horse indiscriminately raining death down upon women/children in the hope of hitting rebels its a good thing.
