Russia has moved 3 heavy tank battalions into a nearby position (on top of what they already had on the border) and a whole support regiment though whether they will actually do anything or not is another matter.

EDIT: Press is claiming a about half of it has moved into Lugansk but not seen that confirmed by more reliable/credible sources.

Ok so the Ukrainian forces have now surrounded Donetsk and begun shelling it, does anyone else see a big elephant here?

When Gadaffi did the EXACT same thing we then joined on the rebels side and basically won the entire civil war for them, yet this time because it's our horse indiscriminately raining death down upon women/children in the hope of hitting rebels its a good thing.

>.>

Or we didn't do it in Syria or Serbia when it was done way worse so shouldn't do it here. Its not a great argument.

Phew may be Russia will stop the slaughter.

If Russia cross the borders with tank battalions and motorized infantry divisions, me thinks we should be dusting off nuclear bunkers...it will be a very, very serious escalation...it aint funny whats going on there

Lol, Putin shows all the signs of someone who really wants to stay put, so no.

Seems to be somewhat mixed reports - press/other speculating that they've supplied the rebels with approx 20-25 tanks, artillery and 1000-1500 private military contractor types, more reliable sources claim they've just moved regular army stuff upto but not crossed the border.

Russia seems to be doing a lot of posturing for reasons I can't really work out i.e. about a week to 10 days or so ago they moved ICBMs* (which aren't range limited in any meaningful way) upto the north east of Kiev but most of them have now disappeared again.

* Or what appear to be ICBMs, they were demonstrating them to nearby residents and cadets, etc. so atleast 2 were the real thing.

Just political show boating, Ukraine know Russia would never use nuclear weapons against them as that would mean a NATO response.

I assume you already know it but they don't have to have a nuclear warhead - conventional explosive multi warhead variants can deliver a payload with something like 150x the explosive power of the atomic bombs used against Japan.

well in Russian psyche, they are constantly afraid of an invasion by foreign powers. They see, and imho justified, the ukranian crisis as a NATO/USA/EU power intervention in front of their stepdoor. It is different to the baltic states, these are small, Ukraine is large and has a large front with Russia, Moscow is even closer to the border. They prefer a buffer zone so they can regroup in case of war just like they did in ww2.

They want western influence out of Ukraine, simple as. Nor the west or Russia give a toss about democracy, protesters, rebels and so on.

I think sometimes the ukrainian crisis has common things with the Cuban crisis, in time and if the west establishes its power in Ukraine missiles will be put on Ukranian soil and then it would perfectly match with the 1962 crisis.

On YT channel Graham Phillips is worth a watch, especially video "18+ Lugansk August 13th"
It shows what really is going on. In Lugansk people have no electricity or water, running out of food. Russian convoy get labeled as unlawful entry by Russia!!! lol!!
When Iraq conflict has started UK sent aid pretty much straight away, why are they not helping poor people in Ukraine??? They are innocent but because they don't support current government or are in the middle of the conflict they don't deserve help?? Seems unbelievable to me!

Goods points raised by Ken in this video

Russia seem to be angling for a pretext to get more heavily involved, possibly via some kind of engineered catalyst - doesn't look like this is going to go away quietly.

Humanitarian grounds would be the obvious choice but western media would hypocritically label them as Nazi's out to conquer the world, whereas when we do it it's all in good faith. The stooge Ukrainian government seem intent on purging Ukraine of all ethnic Russian's with their western backing.

Ukraine has captured 10 Russian paratroopers 20km away from the border (inside Ukraine obviously). Russia has stated these crossed the border accidentally...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-28934213

Ukrainian media interviewed some of the Russian soldiers:

It quoted one man, named as Sgt Andrei Generalov, as saying: "Stop sending in our boys. Why? This is not our war. And if we weren't here, none of this would have happened."

Another man, named as Ivan Milchakov, says he is based in the Russian town of Kostroma.

"I did not see where we crossed the border. They just told us we were going on a 70km march over three days," he said.

"Everything is different here, not like they show it on television. We've come as cannon fodder."

The source also said that some 500 Ukrainian servicemen had crossed the border at various times, adding: "We did not give much publicity to that. We just returned all those willing to return to Ukrainian territory at safe places."

Love it.

Read this on the BBC News site and it made my blood boil. It was his ****ing fault in the first place and he's telling Ukraine to stem the fighting in on their own land? Putin is a joke. Surprised he's not been assassinated yet!

Vladimir Putin: Ukrainian peace process must start soon

The Ukrainian and Russian presidents have held their first direct talks on the crisis in eastern Ukraine, but there appears to be no breakthrough.

Ukraine's leader Petro Poroshenko said a "roadmap" would be prepared as soon as possible to end fighting between Ukrainian troops and separatists.

Vladimir Putin said Russia would assist a dialogue, but stopping the fighting was a matter for Ukraine itself.
