According to Yahoo! an anonymous source in NATO says:

"We are still seeing several thousand Russian combat troops on the ground inside Ukraine, equipped with hundreds of tanks and armoured vehicles, so (there is) no substantial change in the disposition of Russian forces inside Ukraine," the NATO officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Wales.

It's a disgrace that these kids are dying on foreign lands in an unofficial war, without merits. At least the Russian Govt. will bribe the families for their silence.

Knowing Putin's thugs they've probably threatened to lock them up for life if they say anything to external media sources.

Have not been on-line much at all over the summer - just catching up on stuff.

My take is that Marxist philosophy states that capitalist nations will eventually destroy themselves - it's one of the core beliefs. Having seen the financial mess that US/EU have gotten themselves in over the past few years, Putin is probably thinking it's time to put that to the test. He's giving Ukraine a prod because it's a perfect candidate...not NATO but close enough to Europe to find out what's what. The reaction of NATO/EU will dictate Russian military, foreign and economic strategy for the next 25 years. If he gets Crimea into the bargain then great.

He's prodding the Ukraine because the EU (with US help) is trying to annex it and if talking about Marxism try Googling the EU's many links with it. The NATO countries originally agreed not to expand into the ex-Soviet block and yet here we are.

Nothing so Machiavellian, he assumed that Ukrainians, like Russians would be obedient and accept their government being corrupt and doing deals that are clearly against ordinary citizen's interests. Hence he was surprised at the unrest earlier this year and has had to react. What you have to understand is that a prosperous and successful Ukraine would be a disaster for Putin as it would wake up his own citizens to the effects of the huge wide-scale corruption at the top.

I correctly predicted that Russia would carry out an outright invasion of Ukraine earlier in the thread, now I'm wondering where he's going to stop - is it just Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts with a land corridor through Mariupol to Crimea or does he want more? Just the east or the whole of Ukraine? One thing's for sure we can't stop him in the short term.

No idea as to the long term but currently his intentions seem to be to grab everything the Russian side (east/south east) of the E105 (from Kharkiv down) including the natural water border of the Dnieper River below the E105 - I'm guessing he could sell it as a victory at home as well as connecting up the land corridor with Crimea.

EDIT: Wow the rebels want everything from Kharkiv and a line straight across to Romania downwards :S (which is different from the Russian intentions).

Just seen that NATO are going to deploy that Rapid Reaction Force near the Russian border should it escalate. Russia is not going to be happy about that and I can see this getting very nasty

A Ukrainian news report gives the same party line as the leader, Well whoever would have thought it.....

At the bottom of the article, it says "This article was published in Novaya Gazeta, a Russian newspaper. It is reprinted with permission.", so it seems like it is actually a Russian news report.

Do you recall the "liberty fighters" in Crimeea, do_ron_ron? You admired their bravery and you defended their right to self determination. And then Putin himself proudly announced they were his troops all along.. :D

It takes a very specific mindset to be impervious to facts and logic.
