Russia knows it can never really win a conventional war against the vastly better trained forces of the EU.

Basic soldiers in Russian Military are no better than a random civilian picking up a gun tbh.

they have the advantage of numbers - same as in WW2 , they just kept throwing bodies at the germans till the germans ran out of food/fuel and ammo

I think the biggest advantage they think they have is that, unlike during the Cold War, they're up against a coalition and not a single force with a unified command structure. Putin on the surface at least, seems have effectively driven a wedge between the main NATO allies - USA and UK on one side, France and Germany on the other.

Except we have a massive population compared to Russia, it wouldn't be difficult to do the same.

Also to reply to the above, I think if push did indeed come to shove, Germany and France would drop their illusions of diplomacy for long enough to counter an invasion, all the interoperability is already there to deal with differences in forces between states in the EU.

We all know how well the French stand up to good old blitzkrieg :p

For past 70 odd years we made sure the Germans are completely incapable of Blitzkrieg.

We sold our soul to USA and barely have anything to protect ourselves if you take away USA equipment.

It doesnt look good.

EU economy is largest in the world, we should be capable of waging an all out war against USA and Russia at the same time so neither of them ever gets an idea to do so.

what are you talking about? our AFV`s are all home made , same as our ships and subs - oh wait , in fact EVERYTHING the armed force uk use (other than a handful of drones) is made either here or in the EU

You do understand that we do not even have long range bombers, our subs are loaded with American made nukes.

We are buying the so called trash F-35, we do not have 5th gen planes, we are not even developing any.

Nearly half of EU air-force is made up of F-16 and F/A 18.

We rely on American made GPS for navigation which utter stupidity.

Our EU largest air-craft carrier is x2 the size of American Nimitz and if I am right, we have 1 of them in service...

For a worlds largest economy, we are truly in a sorry and dependent state.

Whats more, by 2045, US millitary budgest is expected to double, Russians to tripple, China`s to go up nearly 10 fold.

Ours not even to account for inflation... You have to be an idiot to believe everything is going fine for EU.

why do we `need` long range bombers? only 2 countries have them , and the Tonka do well enough

the warheads is british in trident , and it saves money to use the same delivery system from a larger pool.

care to explain why the F35 is `trash`

the EU is not the UK , and we in the UK did not sell our soul to the USA.

we use the USA NAVSTAR system , as does everyone else in the world , unless they use the Russian GLONASS.
the EU system isn't fully read and neither is the Chinese; so whats your point about GPS again?

the uk doesn't have any aircraft carriers currently in service , and since we got rid of the harrier (thank god) we don't have a need for them

I feel this whole situation is very unfortunate.

Looking at the big picture, it would have been a much better idea for the EU and Russia to cooperate closer.

For example, Russia has lots of natural resources (oil, gas, coal), we have almost none. Russia also has a lot of land (low population density), and is likely to be one of the few countries for who climate change could have a positive impact on agriculture. However Russia is far behind the curve on a lot of modern developments in biotech, IT... generally we have far more sophisticated economies whereas Russia is more based on primary production.

It would have been really good if we could have found a middle ground of mutual benefit.

Considering China/Russia/India/Brazil have their own EU/NATO thing going on that looks kinda scary, they will be able to bully America around and it's allies will be useless. So basically America will be treated how it treats the rest of the world now lol.

What do you mean by EU/NATO thing going on?

They have a lot of catching up to do technologically speaking. I might not agree with everything the US does, but I would rather the US in that position that any of the others you mention. Remember that the US also has many allies and is not on its own. Regardless, I hope this time of relative peace is maintained whilst I am alive. Things will get pretty nasty if it ever kicks off again.

I assume hes referring to BRICS - however neither India or SA are part of any type of military union in regards to BRICS and as above tech parity is another matter. (Its more of an EU style thing than NATO style thing though I believe Brazil and Russia and to an extent China have been solidifying a certain degree of military integration for exercises, etc. - not unlike we and the US, etc. do with other countries).

Yeah I suspected that, but since BRICS is neither a political union or a military alliance I wanted to give the poster the benefit of the doubt.

Yeah BRICS itself is more of an informal thing - there is a degree of political unity to it and if one was attacked by <whoever> the other members might act as a strategic partner for logistics purposes, etc. but they ain't gonna be going to war or even playing hardball with the US/EU in unison.

The BRICS is nothing more than a talking shop with divergent interests. Brazil is a staunch Western ally and India is a regional rival of China. Even Russia and China are not natural bedmates, given the historic rivalry and territorial disputes.

Putin has been courting various South American countries hardcore through 2014, softening relationships with other members - many are not natural bedmates but a fair degree of "strategic" partnership is emerging. Long long way from what ubersonic is implying however.

Russia/China/Brazil/India make up the BRICs nations which like people have said is officially a trade partnership similar to the EU, however unofficially it is also a military alliance similar to NATO, this is why Russia/India/China are stepping up military cooperation (Russia and India are jointly developing a new 5th gen fighter jet).
